hey guys, i was on the motor way yesturday when i saw a police car on a bridge, looked at my speedo, was sitting at 50 so i keep going, a few mins later my car was shaking and i thot god i am going a bit too fast looked at my speedo...still said 50

now i got the car home and the nedle was still at 50...still with me???

basically my needle was stuck since i reached 50 on the motor way and i pasted a mobile camera, so i don't know if what speed i was going, if i was i will be getting a letter and some points which will see me loose my lisence, and al ned 2 sell the car, the thing is, it is def not my fault, my needle was stuck, i have no proof as the needle has somehow fixed it self over night(jus my luck)

just wanted to know if any one has been in this situation as i need my car as my mum is disabiled

please help me if you guys can...thanks

why don't you take it to a garage and ask them to replace it. That way at least you can prove to the police that you tried to get the problem solved as soon as you noticed it. I'm sure if you ring your local station they'll give you some advice and you can always appeal?

Can you not estimate your speed? There is a hell of a difference between 50 mph and speeds in excess of 70 mph. Most people would be able to guesstimate if they are going too fast.

i was talking to my friend in the car you know what its like when ur having a convo for a few mins

worth a try dobby thanks:)

If you have been caught mate you can appeal against loosing your licence if you can prove that you need it. You'll obviously have to explain yourself and make them believe your speedo was stuck and that you won't be doing it again blah blah blah.
I know a woman who got too many speeding tickets but appealed because if she didn't have a car her son would have to get off the school bus on a busy A-road without a path and walk a mile or so and cross it. You can prove you need a car as your mum is disabled and she needs you to help her get around, similar kinda thing really.

I reality mate, i'd just be praying they didn't get you, no point in worrying about it

the problem with your situation is a lot of people try to use the broken speedo excuse. if you get something you can use as proof BEFORE you receive a ticket you stand a better chance, especially if they can find a fault with the speedo, but to be honest you stand little chance. if you were speeding you'll get the points. very bad luck :(

I must just be lucky, i've been flashed about 3/4 times on cameras (though the camera is usually on the other side of the road) and i've never received a speeding ticket!!

Now i've said that, you watch one fall on the mat tomorrow!

I hope my details are correct with DVLA

Yeah as Dobby said, get the Speedo looked at or replaced. if you go to court and say "guess what... my speedo was stuck" I think they'll laugh then throw the book at you (n)

Why didn't you just drive the same speed as everyone else?

When I got my Tipo the Speedo worked.. one day I turned on my car to go to work and the speedo was dead. I couldn;t remeber if it worked when I bought the car or not so I left it and it stayed dead for about a month or two.

I had to make many a journey in that time and all I did was make sure I stuck behind someone, slighty diff if you think you are doing 50 where as I knew I wasn't doing 10 :p

Good luck with that one dude.

It'd be foolish to go the speed of everyone else, when I do 70 on the motorway, everyones overtaking me in a manner that suggests I'm holding holding the system up (and no it's not when I'm in the overtaking lane :p )

if your desperate you can always "modify" your speedo to make it wrong.

on an old escort i took the clocks apart and made the coil spring apply more force so the needle read lower than it should. all it required was a slight bend towards the centre in the sping's largest coil.

dont know if the speedo in your car will use a spring in the same way, but if it does its an easy option. modify it then take it to a garage. they'll agree the speedo is out and then you should get a written quote to replace it (from a fiat dealer if possible). then if you go to court you can show evidence that you had a faulty speedo, became aware of it, attempted to fix it, and it has since been repaired. that could work in your favour, although i know from experience its hard getting away completely with speeding, but its easy to reduce the punishment you recieve.

if you get anything in the post just throw it in the bin and say you never recieved it if asked. it works ;)

i drove round for 11months without a working speedo.couple of times i thought i`d been caught but nothing came through :D

I've ignored a total of 3 tickets in the last 10 years and got away with 2...

The 3rd one went to court and I ended up with 8 points instead of 3!!!!

Dont worry too much mate, if you do get 1 it'll go to court and you can explain your situation to the magistrate. If you can proove you need your car for whatever reason i.e. job or driving someone around who needs help then you'll keep your license and just get a bigger fine.. It was offered to me when I got the 8 points above (which took me to 17 in total) I chose the smaller fine at the time as I didnt really need the car..

tbh mate if you do get a ticket you really haven't got much argument.

your supposed to by law to have and maintain an accurate speedo.

since it wasn't your fault, just a random thing, and you still dont' have proof, your still in the same sht!

their argument will be that you should be able to estimate your speed to that degree or use rev counter (I don't use my speedo anymore:) use rev counter and a memory of what gear ratios and tyre sizes = what speed(y) )
