arabs for sure:p(y)

Possibly, oil comes from plenty places as well as Arabic countries but is refined into what we use in all its forms around the world, but then you know that. :p

Has anyone got any hard proof that Halfords home-brew is in any way inferior to branded products.............. or is it all based on heresay?

Based on heresay of course like all conspiracy theories Sledge... we all know why different manufacturers say you must use this and that and not the other... Its just a personal thing about what risks you wanna take.

E.G. I know Beany is fretting about his turbo bearings failing... so it makes sense he uses something that to the best of knowledge gives him a fair shot at success.

Would anyone use "cleaned and re-cycled" oils....?

Personally I stick to Millers XFE. Can't fault the stuff and my Marea JTD 130 has done 100,000 on it and has never had any engine/turbo/oil issues..............finds nearest piece of wood to touch ;)

It's only about £25 for 5 litres off ebay

I have worked for many manufactureres, inc. Shell, i know that all of them would never sell there best product repackaged for someone else, i.e. supermarket, they sell them a good but slightly inferior product,

Example, Nestle Purina Products, dog and cat food, dry and wet can, they have contracts with say M&S, Morrisons, Asda, , they produce and label a good product for them but hold back the vital ingrediants that make there own premier products so sucessfull,, i know this to be fact as i was envolved in the manufacturing proccess.

The same will be with oil products and others the world over.

Another point.....
Oil-companies make vast profits and can afford huge advertising budgets for their products. They know exactly what they can and cant say without crossing the line and falling foul of advertising standards. Words like, "could" and "might" dont mean "will"

They are also masters of technical BS, the average person wont understand what all the specs`and claims on the bottle mean but they look good, and people assume if they look good, they are good.

Dont doubt it, see similar things in industry almost everyday, no one will pay top dollar for an unbranded product, such is the power of advertising....... but a question remains.

Are those missing ingredients as vital and as beneficial as the makers claim and will the average motorist gain anything for the extra cost? Put another way.....If I use a branded oil for 30k and 3 years what will I gain over someone who uses a cheaper non-branded product that still meets the minimum specs required?

Shell Helix when the cars are still under warranty (and hence getting dealer serviced - they use Helix not Selenia here for some reason); Castrol GTX after that.

I know that even if the Halfords stuff IS Castrol GTX in a different bottle my brain will make me think the cars running rougher, and a tenners small enough to pay to turn my brain off for that.

oil in my cars.

My Bravo- never topped it up.
My Saxo- never topped up, changed when low at kwik fit
my old stilo - never had to top it up. level never went down below half way between servicing.
My old ibiza - went through oil like bitch due to problems it had in the past, threw anything in it and it never got worse. Even used the stuff from poundland once.

i dont believe theres any difference- im of sledges thinking tbh

i'm experimenting with different oils, started with selenia turbo diesel then switched to halfords 5w-40 full syn, the engine was quieter especially from cold and seemed to run better, currantly using mobil 1 0w-40 no noticable difference to the halfords oil
