I'm browsing cars and I came across the one in the picture, its category N, so has been in a crash.

What I can't work out is why a mechanic would cut a hole where they have done. Any idea?

So they're turning something off inside there?
Maybe, depends where the isolation or battery switch is, or the chassis battery.

It’s just a guess as it’s a weird place to put an isolation switch. Usually they are obvious and easy to get to.

Of course they may have cut it to see what it was stuck on etc depending on the damage and what happened.

I asked my brother about this, he owns a body shop and his suggestion was that someone was being lazy and as the bumper was already damaged, they cut the bumper to either look at or access bolts on the chassis rails

It occurred to me that a mechanic might have attempted to fix this. Or maybe the insurance company mechanics were looking for structural damage, that isn't there, it's category N.

Its at auction on copart, I might bid on it, I'd prefer a 500L to this 500X, the 500L has extra room in the boot I'd prefer. We'll see :)

The other suggestion was someone was trying to steal the headlights which could mean there is electrical damage, or they could have damaged the headlights which are very expensive.

There can be light damage to things like the chassis rails which might not cause a structural problem but would still need to be repaired by the insurance company.

As the damage seems all be on the other side.

there wouldn’t be much reason to cut a hole in the bumper, if you were assessing it for the insurance you could just ripped the bumper off if you needed too,

In this picture you can see loose electrical plugs so either someone took something out, or someone did try to steal the head light after the crash

The wires hanging down is a good spot! Is the vehicle alarm anywhere there? Makes me wonder if the car anti-theft was blaring away in a garage. Or maybe the lights were permanently on, so there was some electrical damage like you say.
