Hey all!

Got back from skegness on monday, brought back a souvenir, a 6 week old Jack Russell puppy!

Been looking into getting a puppy for ages and a Jack Russel was on the top of my list, always liked them (y) so i seen a sign for them whilst out for the day in skegness along a country road, had a look and bought one the morning i left.

anyway, i'd really appreciate some tips on keeping him in check, i've read quite a bit on the internet, but i'd love to hear some personal experience with puppies, or with jack russel pups would be great!

I've already pretty much stopped him play biting and licking but not completely, just by giving him a little clip when he does it.

when he wants to be up near me i ignore him for a while and let him up in my own time, he's only done 2 whoopsies in the sitting room, they're really small in it's not carpet so not as bad, most times i've taken him in the garden he's went straight away. he was the same in the car when i stopped for toilet breaks lol.

he's coming out of his shell today and being quite a bit more playful and getting into more mischeif too!

any help with anything to do with him would be great! i know how important these early weeks are, i'l going to get him a cage tommorow to try and house train him (y)

thanks for reading :D

There he is: i've called him Alfie

heya...

it's all about consistancy and routine. and don't ever give a clip no matter how light. if he nibbles you (which he will and more so as he teeths) squeak as if it hurts. he'll learn that its not ok that way.

6 weeks is quite young to be away from the litter. obvisously get registered with a vet and when he's finished his injections start in a puppy socialisation class. it'll be worth every penny and minute.

if you want any specific help/answers PM me and i'll try to help.

oh and he's mega cute. i'll have him kthxbai

thanks for that :)

he's very forward with the cats too, (have 2) they're not sure of him, he's obvlivious and walks straight up sniffing them, the older male cat has give him a warning 'hit' twice but no clawing or anything, i'm just allowing the cats to watch him from a distance to see he's ok.

saying that the male cat came up to him and sniffed him for a few seconds while he was a asleep

it's good that he's meeting them early:)

one good thing about him as you have the chance to make sure he has the perfect start on life.

to start teaching him his name use lots of food (though reduce his normal meals so he doesnt get fat) and positive reinforcement.

he's gonna be a right trooper. lots of pictures and updates please:D

you wont to makes sure to get him around lots of other dogs, people and kids why he is young so he gets use to them. and cars if you planning on ever driving with him in the car its best to get him in there why he is young

he spent 4 and a half hours in the car yesterday (y)couldn't believe he didnt have any 'accidents' at all. was happy enough too.

going to show him to the kids in the street when they come to see the kittens (they're a week younger) soon as they know about him they'll be knocking at the door every day

my GF's dad has 3 Rhodesian ridge backs but i fear they'll eat him up lol

Build him a kenell and a 'run', keep him outside 17 hours of the day in segregation away from other people and only let him get to know you and the kids. Keep him away from the postman etc and feed him a strict routine and when he's abit older use him as a gaurd dog (y)*

Seriously though, try not to tap him when he's naughty but if you do just on the tip of his nose. If you have got a car carrier cage for him (or just somewhere where his bed is in a seperate room on its own), when he is naughty put him in there and ignore him - that way he learns if he is naughty he gets ignored and put on his own.

Also, as you have said he hasn't had many 'accidents' but those puppy toilet training matts at the back door are a good idea.

*p.s. We have three new Rottweiler puppys at work keeping to this schedule - but they are outside 24 hours, although they do have a large kennel for when it rains. They are working dogs and being trained to gaurd the garden centres when they are older. They are still sooo cute though and are at the clumbsy stage at the moment playing and falling over each other.

There are 2 schools of thought on this and i suppose it depends what you want the dog to be

my mate has a terrier and a jack and they are both characters however the terrier is a little b@$tard and will regularly "ignore" the master and continue with what it wants....

Its not nasty to anyone but the fact when its running down the driveway and onto the main road it needed curbing fast, a quick noise (what ever you choose to make) and a tap (not smack) on the rump pick up and put in its basket for 10 mins it soon gets the hint now all he needs do is make the noise and it stops in its tracks and more often than not runs back the master and lays there submissively......

tried the food reward, ignoring it, running away and nothing else seemed to work

I know this will probably start the "dont hit a dog its cruel" argument but he has been told this is the "best" way by a former game keeper that kept terriers for many years after trying all the normal "none cruel ways" and it seemed to do the trick

if you want Cruel just read this

thanks for that info :) I'm going tomorrow to see what stuff i can get for him, how exactly do you do the newspaper way of house training him?

maybe if he's naughty i can put him in his bed in his cage I'm going to get him.

as for clumsy, he sneezes and falls on his side lol

how exactly do you do the newspaper way of house training him?

Not sure about newspaper way, but the purpose made puppy training matts are designed to soak up there 'mess'. I think they have a scent in them which attracts them to them to do their business. The idea behind them is that you put one at the back door, as they get used to it they will go to the back door then eventually you can take the matts away and they learn the assosiate the back door with where they go to go to the toilet. (y)

Another tip is, when feeding him get him used to sitting down as you put his bowl on the floor and don't have him jumping up. It won't be a problem now with him jumping up - but when he's older and bigger if he jumps up he will knock the bowl out of your hand and food will go everywhere lol.

If you can teach him to fetch the newspaper and mail when the postman comes that a bonus too

One name... Cesar Millan. Read his book(s), his methods actually work without being cruel.

The first thing i'd like to get under control is him play biting/licking etc.

then, obviously the house training, he has done 2 oopsies in the living room, when he done them i got him and showed him out the back door to the garden and ignored him for a few mins.

then, i'd love to train him to fetch and stuff, but i don't think this particular breed are known for intelligence lol.

i've sorted a lead and collar out too, aswell as some other stuff my uncle has from his Jack Russel. he's already said he'll take him for walks, he used to spend 3 or more hours a day walking his

hmm i definitely need this cage, through the day he's in the living room with me, either walking around exploring or on the sofa with me lying down. if he does something naughty like biting cables or feet lol i give him a small tap on the nose and shout oi firmly. if i tried to ignore him he'll either just go and do it again or come and get my attention by biting my trouser leg or feet.

as it's been said if i have the cage in my room i can still shout tell him he's been bad and nip upstairs with him and put him in the cage for 5 mins.

hope i've got that all right (y)

forgot to add, i feel like all i'm doing is telling him off, realising this I'm trying to as affectionate as possible, but it's hard when all he wants to do is see what he can get away with
