Driver dies after posting selfies

A driver has died in a head-on collision moments after posting a Facebook selfie and status update from behind the wheel, ... added the post to her Facebook timeline at 8.33am as she drove to work.

:bang::bang:

I saw this, i was gobsmacked how stupid people can be! I do feel sorry for her family but the amount of people i see in my job having serious accidents still because of using mobiles. When will people learn.

There is a video on the web of a woman using her mobile to video her kids singing in the back seat. She then has a prang & the airbag deploys - mum says "oh ****" and the kid repeats :D
Although some people are saying it's a fake?

But yeah, I see it every day. I could make plenty of compilations on youtube if only we didn't have tinted windscreens.

Auch well.

Just got to be thankful she didn't take out a load of innocent people.

Absolutely. Obviously i have full sympathy for her friends and family as well as relief for everybody that passed her or was nearby at the time that she didn't injure them or even take them out with her.

Bad things happen to stupid people eventually, some are lucky that they live to tell the tale and hopefully learn their lesson, some aren't. If you take the risk and die a fools death, that's your own damn fault.

Would have thought/hoped that at 32 she would have known better!

I think in some American states it isn't even illegal to text while driving, something about liberty and freedom
But I too see it every day here as well, and people speaking on their phones, even when driving cars with Bluetooth capability.
There are just a lot of thick, unimaginative idiots out there. I just hope they don't hit me.

Last week I had a hire car with Bluetooth, my brother called me while I was driving on a road I didn't know very well and we were talking about me going to see him. My brain then started picturing the roads I'd need to take to get to his and I suddenly became acutely aware that I wasn't paying full attention to the road. Told him I'd call him later and hung up. No excuse for using a phone while driving, nothing is so urgent that you can't pull over first and definitely not selfies.

I think the issue remains that the penalties remain pretty lenient for the offence. Personally I would support a ban for drivers caught using a non hands free mobile whilst driving.

I'd disagree, £100 and 3 points soon hurt - its enough to stop most doing it.

Though given the number you still see doing it including bus/coach drivers and HGV drivers it would still seem to be an insufficient deterrent.

Even with a max fine of £2500 for a bus or coach driver and presumably being sacked by your employer some are still seen doing it.

Still not harsh enough in my book given the potential consequences.

This could apply to anything though, speeding, illegal parking, defective lighting, all have very serious potential consequences.

However there are studies that show that using a hand held mobile whilst driving has an impact on driving worse than driving under the influence of alcohol.

That is my justification for a ban. And as for speeding, you can of course be banned if you exceed the limit sufficiently.

The problem is, talking to passengers in a car is also distracting, and as for cars with children in them :(

So, the answer has to be, ban all cars but single seaters ... there, sorted.

I have no sympathy for anybody getting fined (or whatever) for using a mobile while driving, you can get a bluetooth head set for less than £20 anywhere in the world, so there is absolutely no excuse, I also believe bluetooth should be as mandatory in new cars as seatbelts are.

If your caught doing it in a HGV the senior traffic commissioner Beverley Bell will personally suspend your licence.
