Are britain Racist?

There are many Brits living abroad though who cant hardly speak the language of the country they are living in.

I have a wealthy ex-pat uncle who lives in Spain and runs a business (something to do with satellites?)

He lives in another country yet refuses to speak/learn Spanish and won't employ anyone who is Spanish and he deems them all 'lazy' yet he's living in their bloody country.

Them comes back to the uk for family events and whines about 'immigrants' and why can't they speak bloody English, pretty much tells you everything you need to know. It's hypocrisy and ignorance. Racism doesn't really come in to it until you identify someone by the colour of their skin rather than the fact they wear glasses or ate one to many pies

A cheese what?!

Chip butty! / chip cob!
Sausage sarny!
Bacon butty!

(I don't like bacon btw. :p )

None of the above ta, white pudding supper for me.
Never been in a chipper in England where I've gone in and remembered that a supper is a Scottish thing, until i get that familiar blank stare...

For anyone wondering, it means 'and chips' :p

I went to a multi racial school, had friends that were black and friends that were white. I then worked alongside many 'coloured' people who I considered workmates and we watched 'love thy neighbours', none of this made me racist.
People seem to forget many coloured people fought alongside us in war and helped us rebuild afterwards.

So very true (and it's not just in Ireland) :(

isnt calling people coloured racist?

I wonder who would fight for the country now.in a war though...i know theres a huge amount Of extremeists who wouldnt.

It seems the majority dont think we are racist, and daily mail probably do stir things. But from another point of view..who is happy about growth of other cultures? Does anyone like walking 5 minutes down the road only.to feel like an outsider. Obviously one can feel
anh outsider anywhere..but feeling like this due to the evident domination of one religion

Maybe my views are felt for extremeists...i dunno. I mix with all cultures at work no problem. I think if i the half patriotism of the jubilee remained all year round..we would see much better integration due to the presence if the union jack etc..if that makes sense?

Dom - re the shop scenario, they probably revert back to their own language because it's more efficient for them to communicate with each other, and therefore quicker for you, the customer. I used to get pissed off by this too, but I realised I was being paranoid thinking they might be talking about me. I realised they had no intention to talk about me - they just wanted to serve me, take my money, and get me the fook out so they could serve the next person and take their money too.

I mean when I'm serving them.;)

If Britain isnt racist what do people think of the BNP?

Back in the early 90s I lived in Milton Keynes for 2 years. There were BNP stickers on all the lamp posts where we lived and one day a man came from the BNP came to my door and asked me what I thought about 'sending them home'. I proudly presented my kids, born here, to me, also born here, and asked him what he would do with us.

He said he would give us airfare to send us 'back there' as well. I told him I was born in Southampton and my kids were born in Poole.

Something that also amused me at that time was that in all the years I lived in London no one from the BNP had ever canvassed my area and I had never seen any evidence that they were there. Back then, you could count the number of black people in MK on one hand.

Then there's one hell of a lot of extremists living in and around Wolverhampton.

Every Sunday the Sikh Temple down the road from me fills up and many of them walk past my bungalow, usually about the time I'm cutting my front lawn so they stop for a chat(I'm the local neighbourhood watch coordinator). They tell me about the troubles they're having with local muslims and they hate that most people can't tell the difference between Sikh's and muslims so they get tarred with the same "terrorist, pedo god worshipping, wife beating, extremist" brush.

Its an odd thing to say but most of the racism I hear about is between people from similar a area of the world, with the same colour skin but different religious views.

In Ireland Catholics hate Protestants, they're white hating white.

Today racism is no longer about the colour of your skin.

Religion sucks .. :(

Agreed.

Something I found really funny happened when I was in a corner shop last year. The shop owner was a Sikh, the lady in front of me was Polish. He couldnt understand her and vice versa and they were both getting frustrated.

When she was gone and he moved on to me he said 'Bloody country is full of foreigners! No one speaks English anymore!' Thirty years ago HE would have been the 'foreigner'. I found it really amusing.

absolutely no thought went into the title, but you are correct.

Apologies for this.

@AppleSei: I agree with some of their points, but most are quite racist. But, despite this, I think a lot of people are turning towards them through fear of the country becoming increasingly muslim:

I knew this topic wouldn't get anywhere as there are just so many different views, but daily, something frustrates me regarding this so it is good to see other opinions.

If I was to say I don't like seeing all asian food/clothing/market shops and not seeing one white person on a single street, is that racist? Honestly, I don't know. I know its a simplistic thing to say and probably sounds like a typical racist, but i dont know.

When I first met my ex I moved to West London. One day I had to get a bus somewhere and found myself in the middle of Southall. Having grown up in Poole this was totally alien to me. All Asian shops and stalls. Even in 1985 there were NO english shops bar the post office and a supermarket (staffed by Asians). Its a typical example of a place where most of the english people have moved out. However, and this is what is interesting, as time has gone on its become apparent to me that whenever a new wave of immigrants arrive here, they seem to go to the same areas. So in the 90s a lot of Somalians went there and now you will find a much higher ratio of white people - Eastern Europeans.

I personally would not want to live there (although I did for about 6 months in 85) but if I ever want fabric, pots and pans or a good take away then I know where to go. It is what it is.

Fiona iv disliked your post again!! I meant to like it. Its good and right.of you to do what you did when that bnp follower turned up.

The thing i cant stand though, is other.cultures trying to change our country. At scchool, several muslims were allowed to skip religious education because 'thhey were not allowed to learn about other religions'.. Its things like that i cant stand.

I see this in many places shere i live. In the government trying to encourage multiculturalism, they have created a further divide shwhere as you said, places become.nearly fully muslim etc

I think a lot of racism stems from dual standards.

If I went to a Muslim country I would be required as a woman to cover up - or risk the consequences. It does feel sometimes that there is no level playing field in this country. If you someone chooses to live here then thats fine - but when they want to change the way we do things - and the government allows this - it causes friction.

This country has had a steady flow of immigrants entering the country for hundreds of years, whether they came of their own accord or dragged here kicking and screaming, so like it or not we are all the descendants of immigrants.

On the whole all this countries immigrants, ethnicities, races have integrated well, some easier than others but eventually they have integrated. The only ones that haven't and blatantly refuse to is muslims. The religion they follow is very unaccepting of others and is making the divide between them and others ever bigger.

Its this divide that is causing the rise in the support for groups like the EDL, BNP etc..

The only solution is to change the way muslims veiw others and I can't see that ever happening so the divide will get bigger and support of far right groups will increase.

Will our government do something before blood is shed is what worries me .. :(
