What are you listening to right now?

Strangely enough, this was on in the pub wehn we walked in, followed by ‘hanging around’ (the stranglers), then ELO’s Mr Blue Sky…can’t remember what was on as we left but ‘Exodus’ is stuck in my head at the minute

The sound of our logburner crackling away. And the wind outside blowing across it. Ahhhhhh.

Recently had a power cut (cable connecting Finport to mainland blew down) luckie for us we had light, warmth, a place to put pots for eating, washing, hot beverages.

Charged our phones in the car for three days (unless the ferrie connection was as running). Until the cable was re-connected.
One night we (and most of Cumbrae) managed some grand sky views of distant suns (and the occasional) helicopter, airplane, satellite.

Next month, the local community may switch off certain streetlights, so astronomers will be able (weather permitting) to view the planets and distant suns again.

Nice idea Anthony :)
This thread has been running since 2004 😉
To join in, this was the last song on my 90's indie classics playlist

So good I listened twice. Many moons ago I used to make my own sound effects like this. It's very relaxing.

I had a listen, was good! Anything else like that?

I'm in a hotel at the moment, so lots of time to remember the 80s and 90s.

It's been so long since I watched regular TV, it feels like an alien concept!

Glad you liked that old school classic:) Another Belly song I like is Low Red Moon. They had a thing about moons it seems.
Similar? Maybe:
The Sundays - Goodbye
Lush - Stray
Drugstore - White Magic For Lovers

I've always liked Blondie, but I found myself always skipping their songs and ended up taking them off my playlist. I think I've just heard them too much? REM and Nirvana are a bit like that for me too.

I like Belly and Drugstore, I will binge those now! Drugstore are new to me but remind me of a band I really like, but can't remember who.

Where did all the rock bands go? Too few make it these days...

I never skip Blondie, but I know that sentiment. It applies to most other bands.

Sounds like you're having a proper rave in your hotel room!

Drugstore are still one of my faves - Say Hello always puts a smile on my face :)

Newer rock bands I like:
The Last Dinner Party
Du Blonde
Mannequin Pu**y (putty?)
White Denim
Royal Blood
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs

Well... someone here has a guitar and can play along to most songs when they've found the right webpage. Makes things interesting, me i don't have a guitar, I have lager :)

I'll see if he can play along to drugstore!

Thanks for the extra recommendations.

Sounds intriguing. Are you editing the book for a particular reason?
Yes I recorded it, now I have to trawl through 19 chapters, removing anything that shouldn't be there, coughs, repeated sections, as well as setting the levels correctly for it to be accepted as an audio book.

The reasons behind it all is as a side line I have been producing audio books.

Sounds good! I'm guessing you take a cut of the audio book sales? It feels like there should be such a thing but i've not heard of it before. I know self publishing is getting bigger these days, Amazon will print off any book that the public can write, no need for an editor or publisher.

Lager is an excellent instrument. Makes everyone more musical.

In that case might I recommend Sober (by Drugstore) as an appropriate lager-fueled singalong

I like the song! I wish Britpop could come back....:) I missed them first time around, not sure why.

I've just watched The Last Dinner Party at the Brits. It was a very good performance. I didn't watch the Brits live, instead I saw the online news and as it all seemed to be about Sabrina Caprenter I only went to see her performance on youtube. It seems the big stars eat up all the publicity these days.

Sort of, it depends on the contract, but profit share is an option and is dependent on them actually selling any books.

I'm not surprised, Drugstore never got very big.

I suppose 92-96 was my period of being a music-obsessed indie kid. I listened to a lot of rubbish :)

Still have a soft spot for those bands that had a handful of great songs but never a breakthrough.

Senseless Things, Family Cat, Mega City Four, Bivouac, Daisy Chainsaw, Eat, Stereolab.

What I'd really like is to find similar obscure-ish acts from the 70's & early 80's.

My parents like idiots refused to listen to any pop music after the Beatles so I have a sizeable gap in my knowledge.

But then I like an idiot stopped listening to new music around 2000 :D

Drugstore are my current fave band, and i'll be working my way through the rest of your recommendations, so thanks!

I asked my son for niche but influential bands from the 70s and early 80s. He's one of those people who listens to music 10 hours a day...can you believe that? I mean, he gets up, puts an earphone in, goes off to college, leaves it in all day, comes back and hardly takes it out. His favourite era is the 70s!

He said the band "Television" from the 70s are discussed as highly influential on punk and new wave. I'd barely heard of them so went to listen and thought blimey - they invented 2000s Indie rock!

I more or less stopped listening to new music around 2010. Rock bands disappeared around about then, so i lost my go to for new music.

The 70’s and 80’s were full of influential bands, the obvious, and best, is the Clash, but the Damned, Stranglers, the Cure (very early stuff is very different), the Banshees, Buzzcocks, Selector, The Beat, etc, but there are many from Killing Joke, 1919, Rose of Avalanche, Bastard, Play Dead, Alternative Radio (like a punk folk Simon and Garfunkel, Fields of the Nephilim, Gay Bikers on Acid, Skeletal Family, Sex Gang Children…I could go on and on but you can see my influences in the 70’s and 80’s, and many are still going…but I started off with bands like the Kinks, Velvet Underground, Sparks and Bonzo Dog Doh Dah Band
