Which car are you buying this year?

Ha, just found this thread :D

1st choice: smart 451 cabrio with the 84 HP engine
2nd choice: FIAT 500C Dualogic
3rd choice: methane powered VW up / Skoda CitiGo / Seat Mii with a panoramic roof. Pity it doesn't have the automatic transmission, but is the only one of the three that will allow me to drive all around for the next 6 - 7 years without looking for any eco zones in the cities here, they just discovered those last year... And yes, I'm very for, I hate old diesels and say they should be banned from cities :p

It's quite possible I'll buy one of these this or latest next year for my new daily :)

This is what i bought this year;

Its mechancially sound. Excellent even, with a full service history. But its an insurance right off (Cat N). The paint work is a problem so i'm not driving it yet. I could have had it on the road a couple of months ago if i was in a rush, but i'm putting miles on my Punto EVO and letting that go to its grave. The engine for the EVO is tapping at startup, i should probably post about that here to get some opinions.

Looks like cosmetic problem only. But yes, paint work is a huge problem. My GF's has been run into from the back when she stopped before the crossing, mostly broken plastics, but a part needed to be painted. It was very hard to find someone :(

They said to me all the good Polish car painters (?) are in the UK now :D

I'm trying to do the paint work myself, its like a merry go round, or chasing a rainbow!

LOL. You could come and visit the UK and bring the bumper with you!

There was a Polo and probably also a Golf badged by Benetton I think in the 90's:

260 were built ;) Apparently it was manual labour ;) So you're going for a limited edition :D

EDIT: Sorry, 260 of the Golf were built. No idea of how many Polos have been made.
These were extremely rare indeed... an interesting Volkswagen. Golf and Polo Harlequin. Used to be one around my area years ago - not sure if it was real or a re-creation. Apparently these were actually a job at the factors of manually swapping the panels of a set of as-built single colour cars done to a plan.

imagine doing that with modern cars, each colour would be so bland it'd probably look horrific by the end, all the shades of grey and brown and weird gold/oranges.

Its a shame we've lost the bright and varied colours of yesteryear. The newest Fiats are only available in 10 or so colours, there are some colours I like but no neon orange :)

I think it's simply cheaper.

However I still remember the 1st gen Lancia Ypsilon which was available in 112 or 116 colours :D I'm not sure if FIAT wasn't in a worse economical situation back then.
This is true, i also think without much evidence that the car manufacturers don't want their cars being associated with "bad" colours. Imagine a Porsche that looks like the VW above! That car would be devaluing there "brand".

I think that VW and Porsche had different targets. Especially in the 90's.

'Volks' in the Volkswagen name means 'people'. In the 90's the VWs were closer to everymen's car that they are today. Later on the Skodas took over that 'cheaper', 'more common' and 'popular' target, VWs became more posh and luxurious.

Then, also Porsche with the Boxster tried to reach younger people and with lower income, then families with the Panamera and the SUVs...

Everything gets mixed

I look at the Porsche SUVs and think whats that about? Because i grew up in the 1980s the Porsche will forever by a sports car. I suppose the car brands are trying to find new markets and age groups like you say. I can remember a time thinking German cars were premium, BMW/VW etc, but now I think they're overpriced mid range cars. Those brands seem to think they can forever increase the price of their cars but not improve their performance.

I await the rise of the Chinese car producers...maybe thats not such a good thing, and not long after i'll be liking the German car manufacturers instead! :)

Porsche have been making SUVs for over 20 years now. It was to go head to head with the likes of the Range Rover and the X5

Really the success of the cayanne probably saved porsche at a time when their only model was the 911 and the boxster.

As least the Porsche SUV came with the option of a high performance engine at a time when “performance” SUVs consisted of something with an under powered diesel

Since then everyone has jumped on the band wagon, including Ferrari with the Ferrari exsanguination.

Apparently there are zero tariffs on Chinese cars coming to the Uk, where as both the EU and USA both have heavy tariffs, as a result the Chinese are about to start flooding the UK with cheap EVs BYD has its own ships specifically for the purpose of bringing cars to the uk

My views on car companies is somewhat out of date. I like the concept of the SUV, even my non-performance 500X, not that i've driven it yet lol

I have mixed views on the coming Chinese cars. I can remember the big fanfare of the 1980s when Nissan, Honda and Toyota opened giant car factories in the UK, it felt like quite a coup for the country. So would it be so bad if we got loads of cars from the Chinese? Putting tariffs on Chinese cars would be protecting who exactly? The German car companies, Japanese?

Surely there's not much value in putting surveilance tech into those Chinese cars, and what with the American internet companies spying on everybody it hardly seems worth worrying about...

(I use spying in the loosest term to mean everything I do on the internet is recorded by big companies to sell products and manipulate me, but not directly harm me)
