What qualifications are you working towards?

Not strictly true. Theres a guy on here went to uni got a Degree in IT now works in Tesco for very little money. I didn't go to Uni after working for 18months in the IT industry I've got a job and im on very good money. Now i've got the job I can now study in my own time for my Degree (which will now be a lot easier) without being a scummy student lol :nerner: :D.

you make me sound like a gip :p

money not that bad but it permenant nights and it is suprisingly hard work (n)

working my way up slowly but end money will be starting wage that I would probably of got with my qualifications - i should of stuck with plastering:cry:

would you have got the job you do now... if you hadnt of had the previous job that got you the qualifications? no.. dont think so.

its either/or. experiance or qualifications, and its a catch 22.. most jobs wont hire you without experiance... and you cant get experiance without being hired :bang:
granted there are the odd place that give you a chance and allow you to get the experiance in a job, but 9 times out of 10 they gonna choose someone with qualifications.
but like i said, there are exceptions to the rules.

end of the day im doing my degree because not only is it something i want to make a career out of, its something i enjoy and wanted to learn more about.

so boll0cks to whatever anyone else says, im doing what i enjoy.
gutted to those stuck in a job they hate, no matter how they got there :)

tbh.. qualifications on paper are the biggest load of tosh on earth.. unless you go the whole hog.. , got one mate on a killing working for rolls royce in bristol, woreked his knackers off to get there... and another mate who works for a company cleaning and maitaining radio masts left school at 16.. with stuff all and earns 40k plus... with no debts....

now whos the mug...

no offence to anyone persuing a career which needs... hnc hnd.. phds and so on...

Well, there are rather a lot of Mickey Mouse degrees available that will just give you a bit of paper with little chance of actually getting a job. However, like you said there are also many careers where qualifications are mandatory. You cannot just work your way up from the bottom - for instance just about any health care professional career position requires a minimum of a degree. You also need to be licenced by the UK governing board as well as having an academic qualification.

I think the moral of the story is to choose a degree wisely. It's all very well doing a degree because you like the subject, but will it get you a career at the end of it? Too many times these days we hear of graduates coming onto the job market and finding that they can't get work in their chosen field. Maybe Universities ought to show career opportunities for each course they offer to help prospective students decide?

Yes actually I would . I started off at the bottom as a jr when I was 17 along side college earning a basic wage was great at the time  :). Got very valuable experience but then reached a limit in that position so started looking elsewhere and got the job im in now which luckily will fund me for my professional qualifications :). Qualifications on there own doesn't mean jack s*** unfortunately because most of the syllabus is outdated and not extensive enough to be of use in the 'real world' although it does give you a foundation.

I agree about the catch 22 though although there are ALWAYS ways in if your willing to work hard and show initiative.

re read my post.. hands uip sorry if if offended you but it wasnt intentional.. i know youve grafted to get where you are but it ****s me off that everything i say is wrong :(

you still havent answered my question, the only reason you got this job now... is cos you got QUALIFICATIONS with your last job... they gave you a chance, and training, and experiance. without that you would be know where...

you think you dont get experiance while doing a degree? we have one over on you lot, not only do we know what we're doing to a HIGH level but through the assignments and in some cases placements, we have experiance in the field too.
thats why you're more likely to get a job with a degree... it also shows a level of commitment to something... we CHOOSE to be here.

I have qualifications to do with my job (some mandatory, some not), qualifications not to do with my job and am not studying anything right now. In every industry there needs to be a mix of people with an in-depth theoretical knowledge and people with hands-on experience for it to work. Unfortunately in this country, the government has got the idea that that split needs to be an exact 50/50 and that's not so - there need to be fewer, quality people at the top with the knowledge and more people with practical skills, all IMO!

Depends on the job, I suspect a lot of places would say you are over-qualified or lack practical experience (though we all have to start somewhere), hypothetically speaking about random jobs!

As said above, its dependant on the industry you want to work in. Thats why I chose a sandwich degree, I have a good foothold on the job market with some experience in my placement.

I always think that people who get places by working from the bottom are amazing, but that is getting harder and harder, as my better half is finding out. She has a law degree, but cant use it without doing an additional course which costs a fortune. My father is a solicitor and a department manager, and he agrees that he would never employ someone in his department without the qualifications. There are just too many people who have the qualifications not to.

I am professionally qualified, yet decided not to go forward into the 3rd year of a BA(Hons) Business Studies degree - the sandwich part...

Lots of reasons at the time, but getting a job as a junior accountant on £6500 seemed the right thing to do.

Also, in this industry, you get a lot of accountancy graduates, demanding the earth yet can't even fill in a basic tax return

my walk into the working world was all or nothing.. what i was trying to put across was that if you have a goal you want to reach and you know how to get tothat goal.. then good for you ( ie doing uni courses and so on)

but if you go to uni to come out with a micky mouse degree so to speak ( as many of my mates did) just so that they can stay in long term education then more fool you, hense me saying on paper a load of tosh as most of these type of people will not have a direction to follow...

i took the nothing tbh.. i left school with just grades up to 6th form... wanted to work... did most of my grades in house... but in terms of progression just existed for 4 years.. ticking over.., it only now that i really decided to better myself, ive moved to a new job... which up to now i feel is the worse decision ive ever made,,, hold my hands up, but i know i will get to where i want to be.. whatever it takes..
