What is an aircon "compatible" gas?

aircon likely needs a regas but if there is no cold air at all it need hooking up to a proper aircon recharge machine to do a full vacuum and leak test then put in the correct amount of gas oil and dye

Any moisture in the system can damage the compressor with its high tolerance steel parts, any rust internally is a death sentence for the compressor
Thanks. This info is very helpful.

The dye is £15, so i'll test it for leaks first.

I've worked with vacuum systems in a research and development capacity, to make batteries of all things. They're no bother to me and surprisingly cheap, I can rememer the day they cost thousands. Now just £120. So i'll evacuate all the moisture then regas.

There's no rush for me to do this job, i'll do it out of sight to avoid the various well meant warnings. So i'll leave this thread now.

I really don’t understand this “I’ll do it all myself” attitude

You might be able to get a pump and apply a vacuum but without the proper machine you cannot measure the dose of refrigerant, you cannot measure out the right amount of oil or dye. You’ll spend money on equipment, money on gas/dye/oil and then if there is a small leak it will all be money down the drain if in a weeks time the system has leaked out.

You’re talking about spending £200+ to do a £60-80 job

It’s one thing to want to learn how to do these things, but there is respect to be had in knowing your limits and not bodging a job or potentially doing something dangerous just for the sake of “doing it yourself”

Ac systems are extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, firstly r1234yf is flammable so a leak can result in fire, the systems operate at extremely high pressure which can cause serious injuries the gas can cause asphyxiation, instant frost bite, Subcutaneous emphysema if a leak of gas occurs in contact with the skin.

For the sake of actual sanity, either leave it alone or let someone who has had training and has the right kit, do the work.

As you’ve found with painting panels there are things that you can’t do properly without the right equipment and experience, worst case with paint is a few runs or mismatched colour. With AC systems you can literally cost yourself life or limb
