Technical Scratching clutch....

Well done :)
Must have been very low on oil for a while to get rusty here

Hopefully no lasting damage done to internal bearings.
And I hope that left rear tyre is getting replaced too ;)
Thanks, i think i'm going to be on a roll before long!

You're eagle eyed lol

Ah the left rear tyre, i'm going to get that replaced asap :)

I've been working my way through the bolts without any problems. I've decided to leave the other driveshaft and battery tray until later, its nice to make some progress, but there's still a long way to go.

Anybody know how to remove these clips? I've already chipped off a little of the yellow plastic, by the time I learn on my own it'll need replacing...:)

Small screwdriver and you push/pry the yellow plastic up. It will then release/free-up the secondary (black) latch deeper in the connector.
Old locks/latches can be soft (or almost broken), so pushing black central feature will not work. Then you can release the black clip with same screwdriver, but this time you push it from the bottom up (hit in the center).

I'll give this a try, thanks.

The driver side driveshaft defeated me today...the Haynes manual says buy a 70mm exhaust clamp and tighten that at the joint to force it off, so i've bought one of those to arrive in a few days. I'll give the tapping another go from another angle as well.

I've given up trying to get the other driveshaft off for now. I've bought a 70mm exhaust clamp which if Haynes is to be believed will lever the driveshaft off, its not been sent yet, so i'll be waiting till the end of the week and will have to get on with something else.

If that doesn't work i'll either buy a driveshaft puller like this one;

or a torque wrench adapter like this;

Any opinions on these?

EDIT: So it being Sunday i decided to go to Halfords and buy an exhaust clamp..and it worked! YAY! The second driveshaft is off. Its a small victory in my life and makes me happy :) I'm taking that victory and sitting out the rain for the rest of the day :D

I'm currently waiting for a large rubber block to be delivered. I need this to put under the sump so I can lower the gearbox. The sump is old, I wonder if it'll break?

Doing this stuff outside in UK weather and locals is always fun sometimes needing outside of the box, or even county, thinking.

Beam across engine bay but bonnet needs to close etc....ok for inside work.

Support engine from underneath via sump.....

Could you make ( even out of inch plywood ) a device that will straddle the sump with its sides sitting on the sump bolts on the engine block, a U shaped device with a stout horizontal bottom bit ( joist sized ? ) sitting on a jack, or wedges ?

Sump bottom plays no part in supporting the engine, height is adjustable, and hopefully gearbox removal not hindered....

Find out size and pitch of at least 2 bell housing bolts, say a 9 and 6 o clock positions to make *guide pins*......to make gearbox refitting easier.....pins just long enough to help with gearbox alignment.

You have a small jack for gearbox support ?

You have an old skate board or similar ?

Even a £1 skate board from a charity shop ???

An assistant is usually worth their weight in gold sometimes. ...

I'm not sure what to do about aligning the clutch as it goes back on to the flywheel. Do i need one of these tools? Are they essential?

Regarding keeping pressure off the sump you've given me food for thought. I'll have a think and see if i can come up with a better solution than just a rubber block. I have 2 jacks so I can utilise both of those. Maybe i'll hold firm under the engine block and not on the sump.

I've just been out to dry the rubber carpet i lie on. I left it under the car assuming that it'd stay there and be dry when i needed it. But its moved and gotten very wet in the rain. In future if i do that i'll put a big stone on top of it.

Oh and there's a big puddle where i need to lie under the car :)

Well done :) Good to know the 70mm exhaust clamp trick worked

I would say yes. Most definitely. I don't know how you'd keep the clutch plate centred when bolting it to the flywheel otherwise.

Thanks. I didn't realise it had worked, i'd given up and was taking the clamp off to try something else, so i got a nice surprise :D

OK, i'll get one ordered.

wow, that clutch alignment tool looks way way way expensive........visit machine mart site or screw fix/toolstation.......for a more reasonable priced universal set, different sizes etc......

haynes manual shows gearbox input shaft has a spigotless end.......

I have a lathe so make special tools as and when needed.......haynes manual suggests suitable length of wood dowel with tap build up for crank spigot and clutch plate hub diameters......

Will sketch a home made U shaped engine support when i get home, all wood and easy to make, you have an old skate board for wheels ??????

Also, have you removed the gear selection linkages from gearbox shaft yet ??

At some point in the future the lads punto is gunna need a new clutch, so i am thinking ahead.

We are out tomorrow but weekend gunna be dry and warmish, time to lye under car and ponder/measure stuff like this wood engine support that spans over the sump and not be a hindrance.......

When we changed the sump pan, from memory, there is room for the u shaped devise if i remember correctly.......

very close to being timed out of library computer. that's all for today in library......

I've removed the plates holding the cables in places, but not fully disconnected yet. I will try that asap and report back.

As long as nobody has been riding the clutch in the past it should last over 100,000 miles.
