Project Cinq!

it's been a late, tricky one in the dark......but we have lift off :D

took plugs out, covered in fuel even though they were sparking it clearly wasn't enough, checked coil pack, spark was quite weak on cyl 2 from the coils, so swapped coils over and have equal spark on all 4, cleaned spark plugs and re-fitted

another problem appears to have been tensioner related, took the belt off, made sure all was aligned, re-aligned the belt but the tensioner was really a huge strain to get the belt tight at all, the more i loosen it off the weirder it feels, so i just keep going, tensioners nut had siezed on the thread and welded itself to the tensioner, making it really tricky to do much with the belt, whipped the one off spare head, fitted that and it tensioned up perfectly

cleaned up the crank sensor yet again, forced it in its bracket as hard as it would go, went to start it, cough cough....bugger all

then a realise id forgot to fit the alt pulley again  get that on,go to start, cough cough..........broom!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

so now it's running again, need to figure out why i've got so much ticking from the cam...other than that,it's frining on all 4 cylinders and revs as smooth as a babys bum :D

Well done Mark.
So Cinq fires again... how long untill she's back on the road??

not sure, could be sometime late this week if i get time to do a few small jobs and get the tax situation solved, unfortunatley im pretty solidly booked up until Friday so might not get the chance to do anything significant this week :(

original issue was the valve, the coil pack thats on now is the coil pack i had misfiring on after the timing belt snappage, i swapped the coils over to rule out it being a coil pack issue originaly :)

ok, more progress, as i jacked the car up to change the passenger spring today there was a loud bang, a look under the arch showed that noise was the passenger side spring exploding when the tension was released! :O thank christ that went when it wasn't being driven :p

last few bits done on the engine today, exhaust tigtened up, coolant bled etc, just need an oil+filter change :) speaking of oil, whilst locating my tapping noise (which im pretty sure is cam shims which i'll have sorted tomorrow), i found i wasn't getting much oil to the cam area, infact, oil rail above the cam is totally dry, not totally sure how much oil should be going up there, but i'd think it's a good bit more than nothing :p thoughts?

That's good you got it running...as far as the oil supply to the cam is concerned, try taking the pipe off and make sure the oilways are clear. Not too familiar with these engines, but does the feed pipe come from the centre bearing housing then go left and right along the cam? If so the oil would come up through the block pass thru the cylinder head gasket, thru the cylinder head, and on to the feed pipe.
So is the oil getting passed the cylinder head gasket? no blockages with rtv (if used) or is the gasket the correct one or the orientation correct. Is there a dowel in the block to line up with the cylinder head, which would be the gateway for the oil supply to the head? Is there oil leaking from the cylinder head? Is the noise a multiple tappet noise or just restricted to one or two rouge wide clearances?
Just a couple of things that come to mind...best of luck.

thanks for the reply :)

yeah, all head oil ways are clear, fed a line down them and can reach the sump from all of them, so oil can definitely go down through HG, just doesnt seem to be coming up again :(

the oil line/rail it t-shaped, connects at the front top of the block and goes both left and right, havent checked the bottom connection but will do tomorrow :)

yeah, tappet noise sounds like 2, maybe 3 shims to varying degrees, cyl 1 has a light "off" noise, 3 is really tappety, 4 seems a little like 1 but hard to tell because its near 3  i'll know when i measure them for sure what ones out and by how much :)

looks like another head pull again then  pretty sure the oil hole on the gasket is in the wrong place

seriously, i need light in my garage, people with lit garages don't know how luck they are!

the reason i have the garage is i can't work in the open, live on a main road that has busses and taxis pounding up and down it, and i'd never get peace to work with the neighbours all being...interested in everyones buisness, i believe is a polite way of putting it

looking at a houses with drives/garages though soon :)

my garage is rubbish though, it's always in the shade, even with the cars nose pointing out it's too dark, one of many reasons i want rid of it

but yeah, car wise, will check its not just the hole in the head blocked or the sprayer before i rip it apart yet again..on the plus side i know just about every bolt on that engine now  should prbably start naming them tbh

What's a light in a garage????
We tend to do most the work on the drive, but if it's in the Garage, then out comes the extenson lead, plug it into the sockest by the Ponds, & put the power for that on in the utility room.

And I know what you mean by unable to work outside your flat. Busy busy busy road....
