New PC build

Guess what - at last the case I wanted is in, should be delivered tomorrow :slayer: Ended up with the Thermaltake Armor+ in black VH6000BWS :)

And spec is so different from the above :chin: but now I can start ordering bits - and yes, 8GB is probably on the cards.

I am going for a Gigabyte board now, will stick to P35 though - just need to check a few things, market has moved on a bit since I started this thread!

Case just arrived at 7.15am - only ordered yesterday lunchtime (y)

Ignore the spec I posted up above - it is all changing now (y) that was posted months back.

I am going QUAD core for sure.

Ok, trying to re-spec.

I still fancy the P35 Gigabyte board - DDR2 as well, which is fine [I don't want to go to DDR3 yet] - Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4 iP35 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143227

Now I was looking at the Q6600 before, but now the Q9450s are out - and am sorely tempted, for the extra few £ :chin: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-202-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793&name=Intel%20Core%202%20Quad%20Q9450%20LGA775%20'Yorkfield'%202.66GHz%2012MB-cache%20(1333FSB)%20Processor%20-%20Retail

I do want to overclock, and have seen a few people using this combo - and easily getting >3GHz stable.

So next stage - cooling - I really wanted the Ultra-120 Extreme http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-039-TR but think there may be compatibilty issues with the Gigabyte board; any other recommendations?

This then just leaves some decent fast memory - 8GB - 4*2GB preferred - I was initially concerned about high latency, but should I be? Will I notice much difference at that level? i.e. would two packs of this be ok?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...upplied with Airflow Fan (TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF)
Or should I go for another make? Never really sure of Corsair, having been a Crucial fanboy in the past.

Everything else seems sorted - 1200W PSU, and initially just one ATi 3870 X2 but then will keep eye open on market, and crossfire in a bit.

Hard-drives - will have my multiple arrangement as now, with the OS on some RAID Raptors, and a few 500GB thrown in for storage, although I am sourcing a NAS drive for the network.

Will be running Vista Ultimate 64-bit as well :)

Ignore suppliers above - I will shop around for best deals once specced. Oh, remember I am VAT registered, giving a nice 17.5% discount AND tax relief on this build

Thoughts? Please, be abusive - but I want to start ordering soon now that this lovely shiney case is here :D and with a lovely clear side case, any modding ideas welcome :D flashing memory sticks :chin:

I'd definitely go for the q9450. My e8400 kicks arse. When I'm playing TF2 I'm almost always the first person in the server on a restart :D

Nehalem is just on the horizon though ;) Looks impressive

I think I'm going to wait for the 32nm shrink of Nehalem before I go upgrading though.

Edit: I've got Nexus 120mm's in my P180 and it's as silent as anything. Penryn's run cool so I reckon you'd get away with a decent overclock without needing noisy fans. Also I have an Asus board and an Ultra-120 and it kicks arse :p

I like those Thermal Take Armor cases mainly because you can fit 3x12cm fans on the front and keep your hdd very cool. ive attached a pic of my web/sql/game server with water cooling :) Dual AMD Opteron

I didnt want a windowed side panel case but it was all i could get. in the end it was brilliant for a server cause you can keep an eye on dust build up and check all fans are running and keep an eye on water level without taking the side off

I cut out holes for three temp sensors 1.cpu1 2.cpu2 3.radiator cool out (temp sensor was duff on 3 it reads 10c higher than it should waters actually 30c on the radiator out) and there are 4hdd status leds i modded on, they are connected with a blue RJ45 cable for quick release

OK, things are changing - but really anxious to order! Now I was pushing on for the P35 board, BUT I am now looking at this Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 - which still has DDR2 support - but seems better overall, especially with that 45nm Quad and good support for Crossfire [something the P35 fell down on].

Glowing review here: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...s-rampage-formula-x48-motherboard-review.html

Oh, and it also accepts the Ultra-120 Extreme cooler as well :chin:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-268-AS&tool=3 only £155 as well :chin:

I am sticking to Quad - this isn't primarily a gaming machine, but has a lot going on with it.

Anybody got any additional thoughts on memory?

Told you to go with an Asus board ;)

Ultra-120 Extreme is excellent. For pure comedy value I think you should try the ifx-14 though :chin:
