Linkage was falling off so I took the wiper unit off and drilled holes and inserted a split pin in each - cost me nothing.

Good advice for a quick and sure fix, but it depends how smooth you'd like the wipers to be. I've bought some spherical bearings (rose joints) and plan to make my own more-precise linkage - when I have the time!

On my Punto, the driver's side link has dropped off the ball and is restrained by the passenger's side link. So the wipers still work, but the driver's side wiper has extra slackness (and, I think, an extra rattle as well).

Then to add to the symptoms, mine has developed the grease-in-the-parking-switch fault that I don't think has been mentioned yet in this thread, but is quite well-known. Symptom is a massive judder of both wipers when returning to the 'park' position from either intermittent or flick-wipe operation. Wipers work reasonably smoothly on continuous operation.

Summary: if wipers judder only on intermittent/flick-wipe, self-parking switch (motor gear) needs cleaning. If wipers judder at all times (or, only one wiper judders), linkage has slackness (one link may have fallen off like mine but still be restrained by the other). Cheap fixes may not eliminate all slackness. Naturally, you want an expensive car like the Punto to be the ultimate in refinement :) I've even installed sound-deadening in the chamber under the windscreen.

omg! I just brought a set of those 30 pound jobies a few months back and last week the freaking passenger linkage fell off whilst driving considerably fast on the motorway!! Oh whilst is was raining cats and dogs!!

I thought they were the perfect solution but guess I was wrong.

How reliable is the complete motor set? has anyone brought one and fitted it?

I dont want to go and waste £65 and find that the linkages will drop out again after 6 months usage!!

Either that, or I'll just have to weild the existing ones back on!!

HELP!!!!!

you buy from the new or old suplier?

the first ones in this thread as you can see by the date i fitted april 2005 and apart from 1 bit that got wobbly and was replaced foc ith a revised part i have had no problems.

the spindle carriers that are part of the oem bits are starting to wear a bit now though

the first buyer. Will p**sed off though. They have plastic joints with metal spindles. Took ages to put them on, but 2mins to fall off!! Were working good when they were on but under heavy rain, the passenager side fell off and broke my wiper! ARRARARH!

This new kit is so easy to fit any one can do it
get a long flat screw driver put it near end of old linkage near black rubber rings, tap end of screw driver with palm of hand and it will knock the old linkage off.

start with fitting new ones to passenger side wiper, simply use wire or rope around it to pull it onto ball, then put other end on to ball on motor with a set of grips, then put the drivers side one onto the motor.
then turn wiper on with ignition off, then turn ignition on for a nanno second so passenger wiper stops in the middle of screen.
you can now move the drivers wiper by hand so you have access to the ball on bottom.
now use the rope again to pull the last bit on to the ball and the job is done :)

no need to remove wiper arms or scuttle panel

New set new supplier + free flat blade wipers

i have just received this new set to test http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/sto..._fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=&_osacat=0

Still £30.50 with p&p but you get the free flat blade wipers too. just fitted it to Mrs Dave's car using the same way as above, took 5 minutes, all seems good, i will keep you up dated.

i will also contact them an see if we can get them a little cheaper from their website as they wont have no ebay fees to pay then.

their web address is www.stormwipers.com

well 3 months later an this now broke too, so my opion is now, if you dont want to pay out for the first all metal kit at the top of thread, then better off just buying complete new linkage an motor from fiat.

This may not appeal to many but my way of over coming this very common problem, was to weld a washer to the end of the ball joint, so that it would not fall off, ever.lol Not had a problem since i completed it, which was 18months ago.

I have just fitted a new wiper motor and linkage set that I bought off ebay for £48! (Brand new, genuine fiat part.). I think there may be a few left.

Re: mk2 punto wiper linkage upgrade. from £30.20

i tried to weld a washer lol on to the end of the joint (never welded before in my natural) the weld took to the washer, would`nt take to other end

Re: mk2 punto wiper linkage upgrade. from £30.20

Ive gone thru the majority of this thread and im left very confused.... As many unforunate others, i was driving while it was pouring down and my linkage broke. Typicaly A) while i was 200 miles from home (blackpool) and b) it was the driver side.

Took it to a grage after a few mins of near blind driving to get charged for a "temp" fix, they charged me going on £40 for which i belive is what is refered to here:

Linkage was falling off so I took the wiper unit off and drilled holes and inserted a split pin in each .

Now, its been raining a lot since, and its lasted fine. My questions being a) how reliable / likely is the "temp fix" and b) whats the cheapest best way of "properly" fixing this. As many of the replys confuse what the first page appears to make out a simple fix.

Any help is apriciated. :)

IMO, drilling it and putting in a split pin is the cheapest and best fix.. if you can squeeze a washer between the arm and the split pin to make it that little bit tighter your onto a winner and will most likely out last these alternative parts and the best thing it only cost your time.. and about 5p a split pin :) dont get me wrong.. if the plastic bush wears out completely it may be a little juddery... i wouldnt worry about that happening til it happens.. but least you'll know it wont fall off.. and if you do then decide to use one of these patterned replacement.. its would be easier to do so because you've only drilled and pinned it.

read the thread and ordered the replacement linkages as the linkage on the drivers set kept falling off. Whilst i waited i tried something else. I got some washers from B&Q (see attached photo) which cost about 99p. The one thats missing is in use; with the linkage in place, slip it over the bottom end of the spindle and work it up a couple of mil and its will hold in the 'cutaway'; basically the spindle's diameter is narrower a coupe of mil up - this has held for a couple of weeks where as before the linkage was falling off every 2 or 3 wipes.
Hope that helps.

I used the same principle but with a thin ponytail hair band, last about 6 months. I also tried knicker elastic but that's far too flimsy :)

I bought the Wipex £30 upgrades back in December, and everything was fine and good until March, when the linkage popped off on the drivers side. I don't think it was on this forum, but I read a possible fix was to duck tape the wiper assembly around the joint, keep an eye on it over time, and it would be fine. Last night, driving home on the motorway at about 11 in a huge downpour, the linkage popped off.

I've been thinking about using a split pin to get round the problem - was wondering if anyone has tried that with the Wipex set?
