Girls stomach removed after drinking liquid nitrogen cocktail

Girls stomach removed after drinking liquid nitrogen cocktail

I might do a ken block with my GP round the town centre then, then tell the fuzz that I've seen it on television so it's OK.

i do not understand the point you are trying to make, the girl just turned 18, bought what she thought was perfectly normal thing to drink.

"Gaby Scanlon is believed to have suffered an adverse reaction after drinking a correctly prepared Jagermeister drink made with liquid nitrogen to produce a steaming “cauldron effect.” "

To be fair I don't think there is to much blame that can be held on the girl. As others have said I doubt she said, make it smoke so it kills me. Probably just the way the establishment serve said drink.

I had some birthday cocktail back in April, it wasn't smoking, but I didn't have a clue what was in it, nor did I ask, I just expected the bartender to know what he was doing - and luckily for me he did.

I believe Heston uses liquid nitrogen for rapid freezing of ingredients, he doesn't feed anything to people with liquid nitrogen still present in it.

I'm guessing some moron thought steaming smoky drinks where cool and found a way to get there hands on some liquid nitrogen, which has to be the most idiototic thing ever!! For years people have used dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) for this, it's freezing point is no where near as low as liquid nitrogen, yet even then its still pretty harmful if swallowed. also LN requires all sorts of special handling and storage equipment so i can't see some night club willing to invest in. Chances are there will be a big law suit and the club will close long before the case is heard

I'm wondering if this is possibly more likely to be the case of whats happened?

My point is Ken block can do these things and is safe. Would I do it in real life and be safe? No. If I did do it and injure myself or someone else it would be my responsibility, no-one else's.

but you would be doing something you know has a risk. the girl you call a "dumbass" thought all she was doing was something that was normal and as safe as any other cocktail.
its like calling someone a "dumbass" who goes out and gets food poisoning from a restaurant. things we are served to eat and drink should be safe.

It's LIQUID NITROGEN. Basic secondary school education teaches you drinking it probably isn't the best life move.

This is why you need a license to handle and store this chemical (well at least you did in 2003 when I wanted some to build a Liquid Nitro cooled computer running at 5ghz+).

liquid nitrogen cocktails are nothing new been around since at least 2008, you have to rely on the person making it right! same as you rely on anything else you buy to eat or drink

And the risk surely lies with the person drinking it. No one had a gun to her head making her drink it. There's an associated risk with almost every action you do. You can't go through life lying the risk on other people and pointing the blame when things go wrong!

You made the blanket comment of "blame heston". I've watched nearly all of his programs and never seen him make a single cocktail with nitro (I can recall once where he used dry ICE). As said earlier he usually uses it in preparation to flash freeze ingredients.

every news artificial is mentioning him too,
ben asked Is this kind of drink now popular in the UK.

Heston Blumenthal has popularised the use of liquid nitrogen in cooking.

you are supposed to flash freeze ingredients to make the cocktail, its the person making the the drink that fecked up and put it in the class, not the girl it was served too.

next you be telling me you never heard of butt bongs

What does that have to do with the price of eggs in China?

That's like blaming Banksy because people are huffing aerosols and killing their idiotic selves.

Do you not have the ability to think independently Dave? Just because the media are mentioning him doesn't mean that he is in any way responsible. The Daily Express was predicting an arctic blast for us this week which is complete borlocks. Why not think about things for yourself rather than allow people whose business it is to sensationalise and accuse to do your thinking for you.

For years people have used dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) for this, it's freezing point is no where near as low as liquid nitrogen, yet even then its still pretty harmful if swallowed.

and most people know not to touch dry ice. I was working in a supermarket in the freezer section about 10 years ago when the power went out for about 3 days straight. Every night someone would come in with dry ice and put it on top of the stuff in the freezer to keep it cold. We had enough emergency power to run the tills and lights, but not one customer every touched the dry ice and no one burnt themselves or sued the supermarket because people used their brains and didn't touch and kept kids well away.

Sadly there seems to be a culture in the UK where people like Dave seem to think it should be up to someone else to ensure their safety and that they don't need to think for themselves.

Blimey!
Wasn't Dave's comment about Mr Blooming Tile a throw away remark, because he apparently has been know to use LN in his cooking? Was he really suggesting that he is responsible for the girl losing her stomach? I for one didn't read it as that.

To have cocktail bars using LN to prepare drinks seems about as sensible as somebody using C4 plastic explosives to raise the stakes a bit on bonfire night.
Wasn't it used in the Saturn V as part of the rocket fuel recipe?
Craziness, and I feel very sorry for the girl and her parents.

Sadly Dave does appear to think that Heston's actions are in some way to blame.

but he still goes on tv encouraging other to copy.

shouldnt use the "retard" word on here, people get offended by it;)

I've never seen her cooking with a roof tile, but I have frequently seen her cooking with a large front bay window.
I was jesting of course :)

The simple fact is that is monkey see and then monkey do in a slightly different way then monkey possibly kill self or other people. it will be a sad day when all a TV chef is allowed to do is show you how to microwave a meal and then check that it has reached the right temperature and is then safe to eat.

If you under-cook food with a microwave, you will probably get the threepeny bits.

If some clown decides to make a cocktail with LN in a form that is going to be drunk, then that's on a different scale altogether isn't it? It basically will explode your stomach from inside.
So, has this type of cocktail been around for a long time, or is it a recent phenomenon? If it is recent, then where would an average (or in this case below average perhaps) bartender get the idea from? Maybe it was Heston, or maybe not.
