cheap dash cam?

I picked up my new dash cam yesterday afternoon, the mini 0801. Haven't really had chance to use it yet but i'll post up some feedback once its been in the car for a few weeks.

What micro SD cards are you all using/what would you recommend?

OK I have just finished fitting mine as mentioned above.

One of the cheap £15-20 cameras, but it works.

I bought a 12vDC to 5V DC module of the bay, I ordered one with an integral USB plug but it came as one with just wires, so I actually got it for free after the refund. :)

Soldered a lead onto it, added the compulsory insulation tape too lol.

Took the light unit out and tested a few leads for power.

The first pic shows the power connections on the three way connector, used a couple of clamp on connectors a few inch above the connector (mistake - should have been directly at it or a lot further away), so pushed it all up into the space above (2nd pic).

Third pic shows the whole lot dangling.

The camera gets fitted behind the mirror (you can just about see the circle of a previous fitting behind the mirror in the 2nd pic).

Works now, constantly on and picking up passers by with motion detection so constantly filming. Might do something about that - but I can always turn it off with the button on the back.

Although Im not 100% sure of the consequences of using this supply - hopefully its not monitored or limited etc.

The car will be left in a airport car park next week so will leave on to see if anyone does owt - highly sought after are Punto's lol

As I've previous sail it's canbus operated, and shut down after the vehicle is left unused for about 10-15 min. Hence why interior light goes off even when door is left open to stop the battery going flat.

Er... no you did not say that at all?

And it had 12v on before I had tried the ignition?

Could be even better if it does that, i.e. its powered while the vehicle is in use and powers down 15 mins later. :)

My mistake, thought that I did, around the same time I mentioned that some camera units require the transformer on the power outlet plug, and chopping it off may not have been a good idea.

Not sure what you're getting at with turning the ignition on having something to do with it  I didn't mention about the light being ignition switched, it's controlled by the canbus system. Prevents flat battery's when the interior light is left on etc.

Probably controlled by the other connector which grounds the lights to turn on.

Because it seems to be working fine, if only the damn thing would stop falling off the window :

OK hands up, seems MEP is correct - it turns off after a few minutes.
Turns on when I open the door. So it is controlled somehow.
But it does mean that it powers the camera when I get into the car, when driving then shuts down some time after I leave & lock the car.

Good enough for me :)

TBH even though it turns off after a few min, its probably the tidiest setup out there, and has the benefit of starting as soon as you unlock the car, and keeps going for a few min after which isn't bad without having to wire in any timer units :)

Hmm, not so sure about this.

It worked fine when I went to the netherlands and left it at the airport for 3 days.
yet having just left it outside the house for 3 days while I went on a train ride to hell & back I tried it this morning and the battery was too low to start the car.

So given that I need it to run more than I need a camera I have temporarily removed the power block until I can find out more about its quiescent current drain.

Most Easterly Pandas do you have an issue with yours with regards to the shutdown time? It seems regardless of what time i set it to 1min through to 5 mins it just shutdown after 30 seconds regardless.

Also the lights around the camera never worked and neither has the 'motion sensor'.

Not massively bothered but just interested if you've experienced this?

If it's any help, I have the same cam - and the same problem!
For me, though, it's not really a problem as I've never had a situation where I've needed to keep on recording.

Seems they all only stay on for 30sec after turning off, all of mine do this, but the lights work on them all, although you could say you're has a benefit if they don't as some find them distracting at night.

Sorry I ment the IR lights round the lens. The other lights do come on but I stuck some electrical tape over them to make them less distracting.

Don't know if it was mentioned here before but I ll say it anyway.

If you want a dash cam but not sure which one to buy then I HIGHLY recommend visiting YouTube channel called Techmoan. This guy reviews dash cameras and properly, u can even download raw camera footage from his blog.

Ah right, not tried IR LED's, think there was an option to switch off? Reason for this is they'll be no good, and only reflect in the screen if they do work. Had this issue with a cheaper dash cam :(
