Bench cleaning
as you can see from these pics, the blown gasket has leaked coolant water into no 1 + 2 cylinders.. doing an excellent job of "steam cleaning" the carbon away.. Rusty sparkplugs can be a good HG diagnostic tool
I use a stanley knife blade to CAREFULLY scrape away any old gasket residue and carbon.. Beware ANY scratching can make the gaskets job almost impossible..
note the tubular peg / dowel that the gasket is positioned by, the alignment of this AND the correct mounting of the gasket are CRITICAL on reassembly,
only too easy to cover oilways/ water channels if incorrect method is used.:bang:
