I think we had a power surge earlier...as both of our computers went a bit squiffy...

The main box was going into hibernation at the time, it stuck at that stage but all is well now...

The laptop however is a bit different...it was producing a Unmountable Boot Volume STOP error on startup. Ive managed to get it back into windows (by using chkdsk /r in recovery console), but IE wont work and the recycle bin seems fubar.

Aside from that it seems a lot faster than it was previously, and is beeping at warnings that it wasnt set to beep at before....almost like its not loading certain system resources.

...its stumped me, any ideas?

the file system has been damaged because the HHD was been written to during the failure.

you did the right thing using chkdsk /r to get back into windows, but now you must repair your file system, sometimes using the windows repair method works but it depends on what the damage is. sometimes restoring to the previous checkpoint works, but again that depends where the damage occured. sometimes you need to reinstall some other software.

since IE and recycle bin are failing in your case, and nothing else, it suggest a windows repair will fix it up.

Windows repair, as in System Restore?...or is this something different.

System Restore wont work. Its buggered that too :)
