Whats up with ripspeed...

Whats up with ripspeed...

Anyone ever opened up a ripspeed unit to see who makes the guts?
Like many electronic products, I suspect the guts for the majority of car stereos come out of the same factory.

And as for the Medion/Tevion comment, Lenovo (2nd biggest manufacturer of PCs) wouldn't have bought Medion if it wasn't a strong brand.
And Aldi wouldn't offer a 3yr warranty on the medion/tevion stuff it sells if they thought it would all be flying back through their doors.
I have had far less hassle with my Medion than friends who have bought into more well-known brands (Dell etc)

I think the quality issues with cheaper products lies in the exterior things like the buttons popping out and DVD screens sticking. I'm personally more than confident about the inner workings but when I'm in the market for a head unit l'id much prefer to buy something more known for piece of mind.

P.s my view about ripspeed is NOT the same about halfords my best mate used to work for them and can wholly sympathise with them however overpriced some of there stuff is. Plus there hand tools are some of the best I've come across

TBH,
I went into a Halford over Xmas , as we were on the retail park buying other Stuff..,

trawled around the whole shop in 20-odd minutes, didn't see a single thing I wanted to buy..,

YES - I'm OLD but there was'nt much for ANY kind of cars really,
having said that though - I've bought a few decent quality tools from them at 3:30 on a sunday when the need has arisen,

unfortuantely incredibly poor parts experiences have meant I would rather buy Chinese via Ebay - than Redditch's finest wares,

Charlie

Mmm, Ripspeed used to be quite good back in the day when Keith Ripp started it, similar to Demon Tweeks. Pays your money & takes your choice I guess.
In its earlier incarnation Ripspeed were purveyors of quality tuning gear, wheels and tyres. Their Mini (Original type) was a regular feature on BBC when the Rallycross from Lydden Hill was on the tele.

I don't know whether Keith Ripp sold out, went bankrupt or just retired and sold the name, but, I'm afraid I'm from the old(er) school that believes that there's no such thing as a free lunch, you get what you pay for and other old adages. But there is a degree of truth to it. If you buy products by Alpine, Sony, Pioneer, Nikon, Canon and the like the name is a degree of quality, even if the products are made in China. However, the Chinese have become past masters at reverse engineering (copying if you like) other peoples designs, but when they make their own versions the design and quality is often lacking.

When I've gone to replace the tyres on both our Panda and 156 the tyre dealers tried to tell me that a Hooflung Dung XT-Z95s were just as good as anything else on the market because western tyre makers had their budget brands manufactured in the same factories "and after all, they're all made to the same EU standards aren't they?"

Unfortunately, the standards, BSI, EU and the like are simply minimum standards. If Goodyear want to outsell Firestone, Michelin, Pirelli and the likes they have to be better not just cheaper.

Some products are so much cheaper that the quality almost doesn't matter. Unless you're talking about tyres, brake pads or similar safety critical items.

Maybe that other old adage also applies. Let the buyer beware!

this is good http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_177537_langId_-1_categoryId_255215

i got one as a present a few years back, I've used it loads, some times even when i really should have gone to the shed and got a 3/8 or 1/2 set out but it hasn't broke yet.

the splines fall out of the socket and disappear though ,now this is ok when you are in a controlled environment but not when you are in a scrapyard taking a bumper off
its not for me ,its consigned to my cupboard of shame

I bought a halfords 1/2 ratchet set back in 1997 when I was a mechanic because I couldn't afford a snap on. I always thought that it would see me though a couple of years until I could afford a better one. 17 years later and both the ratchet and all sockets are still going strongly. The ratchet is starting to look a bit battered. It's that one with a plastic body and switch that's in the middle of the body that slides up and down but it's NEVER locked up or slipped a tooth. That's not bad going seen as though I used It daily for two years when I was a mechanic and rebuilt my first 126 and serviced countless other cars over the years. I was so impressed that went and bought the matching 3/8 and 1/4 one. There not bad IMO

We-eell, sort of kidding. I can't remember the make but it might as well have been that.

Oh, you've mis-spelt it by the way. It's Whoflung Dung, not WHO-FLUNG-DUNG. Who says educational standards aren't slipping?

It's actually a bizarre and ancient form of Sechuan dialect that means:

"You'd rather spend your money on another few pints of Stella when you go to Spain with Cryanair than on something that might save your life. Cretin! Oh and don't blame us when your local Michelin, Pirelli and Dunlop factories close down"

Er, not you gadge.....obviously.

And in closing, I quote a brief conversation that Mao Tse Dong allegedly had with one of his acolytes in the early '70s:

"How will we defeat the Capitalist Lackey Yankee Running Dogs oh Glorious Leader?"

"We don't need to. The Capitalist Lackey Yankee Running Dogs will defeat themselves. Oh, by the way.....you forgot to mention Imperialist. Send yourself to a Re-education and Labour Camp for 200 years."

"Thank you oh Glorious Leader, but will you also be having my entire extended family executed as well?"

"Of course grovelling menial."

The above was a verbatim excerpt from a conversation Mao zedong had..... at least it was according to my entry for Socialism Today's Annual AmDram contest in 1974.

For some reason it wasn't accepted. Can't think why not.

I think this is becoming the gulability forum.

I knew it was a **** take Maggie that's why I spelt it out and put a little :ROFLMAO: next to it :D

Whatever you say buddy (y)

Guess your referring to people like me who happen to work at Halfords?

Yep...gave up using Halfrauds years ago as I got sick and tired of standing in a seemingly deserted store waiting to be served and I find the offer to fit parts for an extra charge frankly insulting, i'd rather let my eight year old daughter loose on my car.
In my job I also have to deliver batteries to various stores and I find the staff to be unhelpful and ignorant.

Amidst all my waffle there is a (fairly) serious point to be made. It's probably getting to the point where some on here will be saying: "Oh no, not again." but I'm firmly of the belief that when we buy from China we're just putting ourselves out of a job.

My mis-quote of Mao is because he was right. The quote I read was:

"How do we defeat the West?"

The answer was:

"The West will defeat itself."

And we're helping that prophesy along the way.

Ahh now I get you and yes your right however it's very hard not to buy Chinese these days even trusted British brands are of Chinese origin....... You just have to hope that they have british quality standards
I have Nikon SLRs from the '70s that were made in Japan and my recently acquired D7000 DSLR and lens is made in China and I'm sure it's none the worse for it.

Buy almost anything from the non-food, non-clothing range at Sainsbury's and it's made in China, and I'm sure it's pretty much the same at Tesco and ASDA and the price will reflect that but as the Chinese make more and more products off their own bat, so to speak, more western companies will go out of business and the Chinese prices will go up, and up, and up.

The Chinese, and to a lesser extent the Indians, must bear a significant responsibility for the rise in petroleum related products and metals which has already affected all of us and will continue to do so.
