Hi, i am new on here and new to Fiats (and automatics!)
In a nutshell i have a problem with my 2014 7 seater 500L. It starts, goes into gears but will not move! It is a duologic gearbox so can be driven both manually and automatic.

Only purchased 1 month ago from a private seller, transmission warning light came on when i got it home and have been in 2 situations of being stuck somewhere. Basically it would drive fine but after turning off ignition, going about my business and coming back to the car the problem would occur.

Twice i had to leave it parked up wherever i had been and the next day it would move again but now it completley wont budge.

The car starts fine, i can put it into manual or auto and the dash tells me what gear i am in. But putting the gas on it just revs and wont budge.
My garage have taken out the gearbox, there is little wear to the clutch. They suspect its the concentric slave which i have to buy from Fiat for upwards of 500 quid.
Thats not all.. apparently this may not fix the problem as it could be the cellor unit (i have never heard about this, not sure if thats the correct spelling and have tried researching it but come up with nothing).
Can anyone shed any light on this for me or has anyone experienced the same issue? I am looking at a bill of over a grand and thats not including this cellor thing they are talking about.
Thanks in advance!

Hello , and welcome :)

The car industry developed these semi.automatics as a way of getting better Fuel economy from a Manual Gearbox than a standard Automatic.

Essentially the FIAT version uses a ROBOT the work the clutch and gearstick for you... the Robot is normally the 1st issue

It needs special fluid.. clear like water..kept in a plastic tub on top of the gearbox

This fluid being low is common :)

Its a shame the garage have already stripped the clutch and gearbox.. but if you are keeping the car then I suppose a new clutch could be seen as an investment

With the correct kit... you can plug into the cars system and Diagnose a lot of this

Im not sure your garage have done this.

Where are you based?

There are a few independant specialists around

Charlie - near the M4

I am in Stafford. My garage have spoken to the Fiat technical team and they advised the concentic slave needs replacing. I will ask about the diagnostic kit.
They also mentioned something about a cellor unit, i cant find anything on the internet about this.
I might have to just keep the car and find the funds as selling it doesnt seem an option now its a non runner 😫

Hi again

If FIAT helped diagnose.. then hopefully the clitch slave is indeed faulty ( it is a service item.. just not a common failure)
Shame is isnt sat in plain view and a 30 minute job like many FIATs.

In your situation I would let the garage swap what they have already started,

But get it back together and driving before committimg to other work.

I believe the nearest independant specialist is near Derby... if the need arises

I believe the 'cellor' may be the Robotised operating system.. but am unfamiliar with that term

Do feel free to update as things progress :)

Thank you for your help i appreciate it 🙂 i will keep you udated!

I would expect a slave cylinder to be easy to diagnose, failure is usually due to leakage, which is visible.
Your description does appear to be clutch related, as it drives normally when working, and apparently engages a gear when requested. Not driving away suggest that the clutch is not engaging. A leaking slave cylinder would gently release a clutch, so perhaps it is seizing, also not too difficult to diagnose.

I've no idea what a 'cellor' is, likely to have lost something in the translation from Italian. This could mean one of the control units. There's an electronic part, that commands the hydraulic part to do its stuff.

The control will not allow you to move away with the brakes on. Brake light switches are fragile, and easy to replace. This needs checking, as it could be the main issue. Related to this is the rear lamp earth point, usually the left rear lamp. If that earth point is not a good connection, it affects the signal the control unit gets, and this has caused 'no go' issues on the 500 and Punto. (This is all taken from previous threads.)

Don’t these cars use fiats dual dry clutch transmission technology

One clutch for even gears

One clutch for odd gears

I could be wrong. I often am.

If so it completely different to the normal robotised manual gearbox

Looking on the wiki for the 500L

There were three different automatic gearbox types fitted

Two types of 6 speed
And one 5 speed

How do we find out which one we are dealing with

First thing to check is the plastic top up chamber situated on the gearbox, if this special hydraulic fluid is low it will not engage gear or if already in gear it will jump out and or not drive, hope that makes sense?

Hi @Coley13 & @varesecrazy & @koalar & @portland_bill & @Pino65,
Could you please update if your issue got fixed & what was done to fix it.

I have a similar issue.
My Automatic (Dual Logic) Fiat 500L (large) had the Transmission error for month. when I took it to Mechanic, he was not able to identify any issue. I was driving it since it had no weird noises or any other drag. one day it just would not move from Parking.
The engine starts and the dashboard shows its on 1st Gear. but the car wouldnt move... Its as good as gear has not engaged. and when i push acceleration engine revs as though its on Neutral gear.

Check the obvious

Leaks, levels, bulbs

But first you really need to read the error code

There's a good chance it will save a lot guess work

It sounds like a clutch type fault, with the little information, available at the moment

This might help as long as its a standard dualogic

Or

Lots more places should be able to help, as the dualogic has been around for decades

As always, first check the hydraulic fluid level in the plastic chamber which sits on top of gear box.
If that is topped up and still a problem it may be a worn clutch, mine was replaced at around 123,000 miles so
seems to have lasted well?
What is the mileage on yours?

Hi @koalar apologies, for the delay. My fiat was towed a couple of times... fiat service centre gave me an appointment 1 month after I called. 2 days b4 the scheduled appointment they called to reschedule the appointment 1 more month later... Fiat services are ruthless :(

Since i hav 1 more month before fiat gets to see my car. I have taken it to a second mechanic. He came up with the below error code.

Doesn't sound good i am affraid

I believe it the clutch position sensor

And it's not an easy fix

At least three on here never got fixed including one that change the full robotic unit

Probably time to see the advice of a auto tranmission specialist

Hope I am wrong, I usually am.

An Alfa specialist should have the experience to do this accurately...
