where as last night she said every one will get at least 10 cm and some will get 15 cm

At least a woman can accurately gauge 4 to 6" :p

The thing about places like Canada and Northern Europe is they have equipment like snow blowers and decent plows we have 400 gritting lorries with 2 plows between them.

As it stands we already produce far too much waste in the form of old tires which are very hard to recycle and contain loads of harmful materials so people having two sets of tires for every car they own is never going to be a good idea, however things like the snow socks or just the councils investing it better equipment would make the world of difference.

The video of Norwich with the cars and bus all getting stuck is a little unfair, I know the road well and its always greasy with diesel and oil, as soon as it rains the road becomes a skating rink so you stand no hope on snow

Not sure how that logic works. I get through exactly the same number of tyres with 2 sets as I do with 1, just they all last a lot longer time wise with 2, they wear doing the same amount of mileage, but the amount each set covers in a year is less than if I only had 1 set, and what that 1 set would travel in a year ;)

Absolutely.... Worked in Sweden, for a while: and it was amazing to see the roads perfectly clear in the morning, after two or three feet of snow -- with just these massive snowbanks, on the side of the road, as proof of the ploughs going through.... Wonderful...! :)

But then, of course, they get heavy snow for many months of the year; where we're lucky(!?) to get the odd weekend. For them, it's normality. For us, an utter crisis: which seems to bring out the worst in some people.... :(

I know what you're saying but that relies on people having two sets of wheels and not everyone has the space to do so, on the basis of it being a legal requirement to fit snow/winter tires some people will just nip in to kwik fit and have all four tires swapped for winter replacements then swap them back again in the summer binning 2 good sets of tires per year a two car family would need 2 sets of spare wheels knocking about all year which is no joke if you live in a flat have no outbuildings or no garden, whatever can you do?

still wouldnt be a waste if tread was legal the fitter dude will sell them to a mate or ebay them

some places will even store you winters/summers for you when not in use

if suddenly the majority of the car driving public in say London where space is a premium, dumped there summer tires tomorrow then in 12 weeks time they all did the same again to go back to summer tyres you would literally flood the market with tires no one would want some might get sold on on ebay or the fitters mate but the majority of those would go to the tip.

Then this happens across the whole country every town and city you would pile up literally millions of tires

tyre hotels exist in the UK....

I think we need some video footage (y)

I ran upstairs and tried to get it on video from my lad's bedroom window. I manged to capture one small car-wall collision, but the quality is crap. I'll see if I can sort it later.

Instead of starting a new thread. Just something iv wondered.

If for example, we had all the money we could want and with only using 'today's' technology, could we actually do an excellent job with the roads etc? Or, would the better approach be to leave the roads/clear the top layer, and issue everyone with chains?

When I go to the Italian dolomites, they always manage to shift such huge amounts of snow and never seem to have any issues with things like this. Yes they're used to it and nearly everyone there has a small digger of some kind. Could something like that be done here?

I know people always say 'we don't have enough money/were not used to these conditions in england' but even if we did have enough money/equipment, could we keep our airports open and roads clear? What you reckon?

(btw, they are doing a good enough job as it is, but still there has been issues)

Heated roads FTW!!!

Some streets and roads in places like Sweden and Iceland are heated from below. I know in Iceland they use pipes from geothermal power stations, which is handy.

Hmm, true, although could always possibly run winter all year around for those without storage space.

Tbh I don't mind, I'm more worried about other people being aware of you being thick and disregarding your gibberish. You're beyond help though sadly :)

NO need for that , that is uncalled for imo .. theres people out there like me , when they put some sentances together they may not make some sense , and for spelling i know im crap ,. and Gibberish ... post some of dave`s gibberish up please .?

Don't see the point of running 12 months of the year on tyres that are of true benefit perhaps 4 or 5 times a year and worse the rest of the time...also if you fitted them one winter did 12k by the next winter would they be ready for binning anyway?

It's my opinion :)

The point is that you're not going to crash in the summer because of winter tyres. It's insurance basically :)
