Snow thread 2013

Amazes me how I ever learned to drive without all those 'gimmicks'.
With regular snowfall for months at a time, you either learned to drive or you lost the car (crash it or leave it at home).
With my snow socks on this morning, I sailed past a guy trying to get his merc up a nearby slope. He was moving forward mm by mm, his engine covered 2000 miles, the car covered a mile :D

in the olden days most tyres had sipes, over the years they have been gotten rid of because people prefer less noise and better economy over grip in winter

Indeed, as a rookie driver in the snow for the first time in '87 it took some skill to pilot my '73 MkIII Austin 1100 through it! Especially as it was shod with Remould Crossplies of the Goodyear G800 pattern all round and as I discovered later, had a rotted out heelboard on the offside so the 2 of the rear subframe mounts (OSF&NSR) had failed allowing for partial rear wheel 'steering' or 'yaw control'

I had stopped participating in LL, just following car build threads and technical stuff etc.
I remember why now.
A new vistor to FF would think that it is a home for petty feuds and squabbles wouldn't they?

Don't forget all the nonsensical bs as well :)

Well there isn't much here...have got a mate down south complaining he's snowed in....

However he's southern snowed in, I.e. tried to move car it won't move so went back in house. Rather what I would class as snowed in I.e. you don't just need a shovel and rubber mats to get started you need a snow plough..

We have 2 to 3 inches so far. Not snowing at the moment but more forecast later. Just seen daft woman over the road trying to get her car off the drive - max revs and going nowhere. it's not even steep ffs

She went out again a few hours earlier. I was just calling the dog in and I heard her absolutely revving the knackers off her little 206. I had to go and watch. The car was slewing from side to side as she revved it for a good five minutes. In total, she bashed the offside front wing into the boundary wall 6 times! eventually she got off the drive.
Apparently this woman has a colourful history with her cars - a few years ago she went straight through the boundary wall, and soon after that she parked on the road and forgot to put the handbrake on. The car rolled down the road, clipped another car, veered off and ploughed through another wall on the opposite side of the road.
I can't wait for the next installment :D

I think we need some video footage (y)

Instead of starting a new thread. Just something iv wondered.

If for example, we had all the money we could want and with only using 'today's' technology, could we actually do an excellent job with the roads etc? Or, would the better approach be to leave the roads/clear the top layer, and issue everyone with chains?

When I go to the Italian dolomites, they always manage to shift such huge amounts of snow and never seem to have any issues with things like this. Yes they're used to it and nearly everyone there has a small digger of some kind. Could something like that be done here?

I know people always say 'we don't have enough money/were not used to these conditions in england' but even if we did have enough money/equipment, could we keep our airports open and roads clear? What you reckon?

(btw, they are doing a good enough job as it is, but still there has been issues)

if they made it law to fit winter tyres and got rid of all the slippery salt we would all be safer and cars and roads would last longer
