Hi out there. Can anyone please let me know what the cost of replacing the timing belt and water pump including followers would be here in the U.K. the car is a panda 100bhp. Thanks

how long is a piece of string

cam bet + water pump vary from £150 to nearly £900

including a service under £400 would be reasonable

no idea on followers

I think if someone wanted £900 for the job, I would belt them never mind the car. Workshops have set times for belt replacement. Bits of string not needed

Fiat Slough for a quote. It needs a Cambelt and water pump and the service and the quote was £845

on a very similar difficulty/time engine

Labour in centre London will not be the as somewhere in say Cornwall.

Maybe someone could recommend a garage if they knew what area your in

Shop 4 Parts have the SKF timing belt kit for under £60 https://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Product&ProdID=26667
Shop 4 Parts cam belt cover (often broken) https://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=...Panda_II_(04_to_09)_1.4_16v_Timing_Belt_Cover

You will also need the correct engine locking tools. The cam lock tool has a spring loaded pin. You screw it into the side of the cam cover with the flats vertical and turn the engine until the pin drops into place. You then fit the crank locking tool. Cam belt is fitted and tensioned with the cam wheel loosened. You will need a pulley holding tool to prevent overloading the cam and/or the cam belt as you torque it up.

This looks to have all you will need https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393679745850?hash=item5ba924333a:g:6wQAAOSwoABhEkMn

3 hours with aircon not including water pump or service

but doesn't help.

labour depends where you have it replaced

Is there a big difference between the 1.4 100hp and the normal 1.2 engines? I've done several 1.2 timing belts and the last one I did under 90 minutes on the street. the biggest challenge i got was that I could not find my special tensioner tool so I needed to use a set of needle nose pliers...

the engine looks the same according to this thread https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/100hp-cambelt-changed-do-i-need-to-do-a-phonic-relearn.452300/
nope

on a ramp, with all the tools, its a quick and easy job especially if you are doing them regularly.

What time garages charge (book time)for and the actual time taken are not the same thing and hadn't been for a long time.

Ok, thanks for input. So far I have had a fiat independent asking £375 and a Fiat main dealer asking £240 both included vat. This was for fitting the belt and water pump including the parts. Looks like it’s going to be Fiat who gets the job.

The water pump is driven by the cam belt so its daft to not replace it.

The cam belt covers often get broken (front connecting bolt area). New covers are not silly money but have to be fitted with the engine mount out of the way. The cover is not a job you can "leave for later".

The job is different to the 1.2 because the 1.4 is not a "safe" engine. You cannot take risks with the cam timing. You also have to loosen the cam pulley while belt tensioning. The 1.2 is easily done with paint marks and a follow-up check (and correction) to be sure it's not one tooth out.

In my case, the water pump was leaking so the entire belt kit was fitted. I also had a sheared off engine mount bolt. How does someone shear off one of those? I drilled it out and tapped to M12 so it's all good now. Dread to think what the garage costs would have been.

I do understand you need the correct locking tools. But even though I am an enginee, I just don’t think I can be assed to do the job. My days of fooling around with cars is long gone.

My daughters Panda 1.1 was £260 for new belt, tensioner, water pump, fresh antifreeze and 4 spark plugs at a local independent. Did a very good job too.
