I was reading a tale of a FIAT HGV in a run to Iraq and back in the 70's, it stripped its timing gears, a temporary repair lasted Back to Europe ish, then it got loaded onto the Back of its sister truck/trailer ( needed access to a loading dock for this..) and carried all the way back to Belgian docks

The N. E. Based outfits other truck was a Seddon Atkinson

It got me thinking where and when these days changed
I recall seeing Lots of FIAT trucks on the BBC / LIVE AID footage from the 80's
(Ethiopia was Italian run a while back..)


Roll forward to 2020..
On my regular M4 trips I saw a beautiful Black and Gold
(think JPS..)

VOLVO truck.. With " Ailsa Edition" quite prominent.., this may mean more to Scots 😉


Modern era members on here have Driven Scania and MAN trucks


When did it all change? 🤔
Volvo/Daf Scania, Renault, MB

IVECO seem to have been around for decades.. But don't know the history..

There’s the very obvious source Wikipedia:
Iveco was incorporated on 1 January 1975, with the merger of five different brands: FIAT Veicoli Industriali (with headquarters in Turin), OM(Brescia, Italy), Lancia Veicoli Speciali (Italy), Unic (France), and Magirus-Deutz(Germany).
However you have to follow the other, individual, links to see how it evolved and how it was marketed used in different markets. From a purely Italian / Iveco point of view, iveco was largely marketed as Fiat with a small stylised italic ‘i’ initially, then later as just Iveco with, sometimes, with a small original ‘manufacturers’ name/plate such as OM, Fiat, etc…
Wehn Fiat/Iveco bought the remaining shares from the others in the group, it became fully Iveco with no additional name plate, except in certain markets, (Magirus Deutz for instance). wehn fiat/Iveco bought out Ford Commercial Europe, and Ford was the market leader and/or seen as a local/native manufacturer. I still can’t fathom out why some folk still believe Ford is British?!?
Anyhow, that’s a very simplistic answer, and you can go down weird rabbit holes on the net of obscure tangents…such as Sofim, KHD, Hotchkiss etc
 
The first Daily’s were badged Fiat, without the ‘I’, we had a few in at the dealership, even though it was allegedly always a Iveco in this country.
 
Iveco’s have only really been around since the 90’s, I remember the last Ford Cargos had a small Iveco badge on the bottom right of the grill. After this the Cargo disappeared and the Iveco Euro Cargo was born. Ford have recently reappeared on the HGV market, you’ll spot some of the Eastern European companies running them. That’s because they’re turkish built, and they use the Volvo FH cab. Do remember seeing plenty of Fiat badged HGV’s in the 80’s, but they disappeared once Iveco appeared as think they took the cab design. The 8 wheeled Iveco tippers were known as “Maggies” for years as they were just rebadged Magirus Deutz trucks. Again using the same cab

VM were diesel motor specialists in the 70's / 90's era

Googling " Ailsa" was interesting too, a different era for sure 🤔
Astra also came under the Iveco umbrella, known for construction/quarry heavy load hgvs

Yeah same cab and slowly the KHD engines supplanted by Fiat/Iveco engines. The modern European Ford commercials are generally rebadged or joint makes with other manufacturers.
Anybody remember the full body Xetas, every snapon/Mac tools had one and a mate had an early Fiat badged one as a festival and bike trials garage/camper

Yup, full bodied CoE with bodywork that covered entire truck
