Panda (Classic) Mk1 Fiat panda 4X4 restore

Introduction

Sam's Fiat Panda mk1 restoration thread

Day 1

Started work today on the panda, my god, what have I done . As im working on the car I'm keeping a running notepad report/ideas/questions sheet.

Mission today : Rust finding

Rust found on

Front arches
Front sills (passenger side)
Under washer bottle
Scuttle pannle, passenger side
Rear tail gate

Rear tail gate is a write off, and the rest is going to need a lot of welding. Underside checks out with solid jacking points. Rear arches solid but have surface rust. Look better after a blast with the sander.

Removed bonnet 4X10mm bolts
Spare wheel removed with tool kit and jack
Washer bottle 1x 8mm nut
Scuttle panel vents
Bulk head insulation, removed 2 Philips screws removed fuse box (2 wires disconnected my mouse)
1 Orange and 1 white block disconnected from washer bottle
vents removed, 2x2 Philips screws
Wiper removed
Scuttle panel removed

Photos to be sorted out soon, sorry for the some what ott list, its more for my reference as I know what i'm like with bits of paper.

I was happy with everything till I saw the mess under the scuttle panel  Im in this deep however I may as well crack on.

I have two options, find a panda non runner and cut the bits I need out of that, Or get my self a anvil and vise and make up some sheets my self.

All in all, PANIC!!!!
The plastic over the arches inside are quite fancy too, i think all mk1's had this (correct me if I am wrong).

On the MK1 only Super, VIP & 4x4 had them. Comfort and CL had painted metal.

On the MK2 only Super and 4x4. L, CL & CLX had painted metal.

Dam :(

Life has gone against me on this one and getting my jag back on the road that expired in a cloud of blue smoke is more important. (I need the shed and space)

The panda will be up for sale as a roiling shell project or im going to break it to save the life of another mk1 panda. Offers invited when it goes in the for sale section :(

 Ah no, you were doing so well. If I had the means to get it home I would save it.
Surely to goodness someone will step forward and save it.

Are you sure you can't put it away in a quiet spot until you get time to go back to it.

The panda has a reprieve!
The jag was fixed this week :p and with out the bill of 1.4k I was expecting

Cat had shattered making a rattling noise that sounded like it was gearbox related. Add this to the fact it blew 2 pints of oil out of the breather on the gearbox at the same time, I thought the auto box was toast.

turned out the last "specialist" to work on it overfilled it and at 7k rpm it found the path of least resistance to escape.

The Sci is nearly done and the missis is off with work for the next week which means Ill get some quality time with my projects.

Thanks for the kind words and sorry to have to turn a couple of people away from the parts they had requested.

Hurrah!! Thats excellent news for both cars. Keep posting up pictures of the work, and also dont go scaring us again :p I am more than happy not taking spares off you too, just really releived its not the end of the road!

Good luck with the future work!

Right, some movement!

I made a few calls today and as it turns out one of the stockists for the body panels is VERY local.
So ill be off to collect some shiny none dented, none rusted panels tomorrow. I haven't gone OTT and have just got the bits I need for the time being to keep me going + I need to check fitment quality is OK.

Its like waiting for Christmas all over again!

I still need a complete bonnet though :(

Still waiting for the parts! next day my ass, should have some on tuesday and take it from there.
Today I have been cutting templates for bits of metal I need to reattach to the car!

Some more work today, patching up

Im getting better slowly but will be taking my self off to a course

So cut out the bad:

It plated, then a fibreglass resin to tidy it all up

Tidy welding in the front arch near the suspension mount. I had trouble with little fires developing in the box section when I was working on the same area. I get paranoid about fires though, hate the thought of my pride and joy going up in flames.

There is something satisfying about new panda panels. I am amazed how rust free a panda shaped piece of metal can be sometimes lol!!

Iv'e had that trouble too. It seems that welding after your car has already been waxoyled, is like spraying it in Napalm and then introducing it to a heat source :(
