Is the *1.8 + 32 conversion for ºC to ºF 100% accurate or is there another conversion for scientific/engineering requirements.

Probably. :p

According to one of my lecturers, a 10% accurate estimate isnt bad for engineering applications. If so, then why does the same guy use 5 significant figures suffixed with 10^5?

Lunatic...

oooooooOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooOOOOOOOOooooooo

Careful everyone Neofolis is going to start swinging at people with his handbag soon!!!!!

Neo, I didn't mean the reverse centi method, the method that instantly replaced it fortunately.

We do use the 1.8* conversion for science and engineering, I haven't ever considered if it is correct or just an approximation.

Neo, do you remember what issue it was in, I have the last 8 or so with me in Manc, the 50 or so before then are in my loft at home though :( I know nothing about a slightly different absolute 0 other than it's a pretty silly thing to have to consider anyway lol

D-Stilo, as I have mentioned before, you'll know when I'm being serious, cos you'll laugh.

Sorry, didn't notice the issue number, it may even have been on their website at the time. I don't usually keep back issues, there's already too much crap in this house.

I found the acticles on anti matter interesting as well. Do you know if they have managed to create a stable enough envirionment for anti hydrogen yet. Last I read an american university had had some success with creating it more economically than Cerne, but they were hoping to make it stable enough to do some tests on it. That was a couple of years ago.

Often the harder stuff is beyond me and with limited time, i don't read it. Anti-hydrogen came up around 4-5 months ago but I don't recall what they said.

I've only been reading it for about 14-15 months and I can't afford it anymore :(

I have to say since reading Angels and Demons, anti-matter is a scientific area I've become more interested in as up until recently I thought it was all fiction. If either of you knows of some not-too-sleep-inducing reading material I'd be happy to hear it :)

Centigrade is the original name Mr Celsius gave to his new scale - it was only changed to Celcius in the 40's in recognition of Mr Celcius and to avoid confusion with the metric system since it's only 0 and 100 at "Normal Pressure" so not really metric I guess.

Neopolis, Having 100 as freezing and 0 as boiling is not stupid at all, OK so when it gets hotter you want a higher number right? Ever think that maybe Mr Celcius wanted a higher number for COLDER temperatures?! Makes just as much sense. Remember we're taling 300 years ago here.

How does hotter going down make more sense? I guess it would, if every other scale went down and we had always accepted that form of measurement.

Where does it say silly? I just wondered how it makes more sense, I didn't even say it doesn't make sense.

I was just answering the question.

If you want to be that picky, I never actually said that you said it was stupid.

And sorry I thought it was Neopolis what does Neofolis mean is it your name?

Who said he thought it made more sense? I guess he thought it made as much sense either way round.

Dr Pepper is the oldest marketed soft drink in the world! And tasty too.

I agree that it would have made as much sense either way round, it just seems that with the existing scale at his time going from cold to hot, low to high, he may have thought it made more sense to go the other way, otherwise why consider it when people were already used to it going that way.

Obviously with the added knowledge of absolute zero it makes more sense to go up as you get hotter, because absolute zero gives a starting point, even if that point isn't at zero in every scale.

Let's not argue, in an arbitary (spelling) sense it is obvious to have it that way. Also since temperature is so related to energy, an increase in temperature relates to an increase in energy, it would be silly to have an inverse law needlessly.

Oi you're the most guilty of having arguments on the forum you can't tell us off! Nothing wrong with a good discussion anyway I don't see an argument.
