Panda (Classic) Fiat Panda 750L - Minor Restoration Project - Work In Progress

Introduction

So here is our 750L Panda - Also know as Victoria.

attachment.php

Now as you all know I like all Panda's and all of ours are special in their own little way, but none more so that this 750L. It was our first ever Panda and started what has so far been a decade of Panda fun. It was also given to me by dad and was my first ever car so has a very special place in my heart, even if a lot of my mates thought it was a shed (n)

She was purchased in September 2000 from a very good family friend who purchased her as an ex-showroom demo from Thames Fiat in South London in 1989. We brought her for a mere £250 with some tax, MOT, and a full Fiat service history, no rust, and only 35,000 on the clock!! A bit of a bargain if you ask me, but at the time the used car market was at its worst and if we hadn't brought her our friend was actually going to scrap her!

So from September 2000 through to the summer of 2006 she was the family's second car, being used as a work horse during house moves out of South London to Norfolk, and then 6 months later for another move from Norfolk to Sunny Suffolk.

During the Summer of 2006 we spotted a Panda 1000CL for sale locally which was the identicle twin of the 750L. So we had to buy it. £80 later, it was apparent that she needed a lot of work for the MOT, but nothings inpossible and we then had a Father and Son 'Pandas R Us' Pair. In July 2006 I passed my driving test, and after a short adventure in Bolivia September came around and with 96,000 miles on the clock, dad handed me the keys and the 750L became mine :)

She gave me a year of trouble free motoring, and other than needing a new battery and centre exhaust section (she's had more exhausts in the past decade than I care to remember, but the majority have always been covered by one warrentee or other) cost me next to nothing to run, and took all the abuse that your average 17 year old lad could throw at her  .

However, after nearly a year of ownership I spotted a bargain Selecta on eBay with 15,500 miles on the clock for a mere £350 with a years MOT. After a few minutes of thinking and then realising that the 1108cc Selecta had 50% more CC's than the 769cc the 750L had I hit the Buy It Now button and purchased it.

So since September 2007 the 750L has sat peacefully on the drive with 113,000 miles on the clock. Gradually she's started to look sorry for herself, and although she starts and moves fine, bodywork is slowly starting to perish, and there are a few odd jobs that need doing on her before she'll fly through another MOT.

These jobs include;
  • Changing Both Headlamp units - both have broken reflector units that don't sit on their mounts, and the reflectors have started to become a little less reflective (see pics).
  • Investigate and change headlamp switch - I can't remember if this one has burnt out or not, but have a funny feeling it has.
  • Change Coolant Pump Seal - The 'O' ring washer that seals the coolant pipe tube to the pump has gone / been ruined when I recently done a coolant flush and change - she now doesn't hold coolant for very long.
  • Replace Rubber Exhaust Brackets - The rear Rubbers have perished and the exhaust is now resting on the rear axel. A nice and easy job.
  • Degrease and clean engine and engine bay - A bit of a mess, and shouldn't take much to tidy it up
  • Mount Alarm Siren correctly - For some reason this was cable tied in place when I fitted the system years ago
  • Investigate and Fix Front Lights Wiring - Indicators seem to be a bit hit and miss and the wiring is a mess after being hacked about 7 years ago when an earth issue arose. So I need to check and tidy this up, I may just replace the whole wiring loom as I have a spare so it'll all look better under the bonnet
  • Investigate Rear Wiper Motor - It runs really slow, I think its the motor, and have another so will see if current one is serviceable, and if not replace it with the spare.
  • Investigate and Fix Temperature Guage - On dash guage has stopped working, was intermittant when I had her, so is probably just a wiring / connection issue, so will check wiring and if needs be change the sensor (y)
  • Fit Rear Wheel Arch Trim's - Old ones were damaged and faded, so for the sake of £10 a side I've brought replacements from Fiat.
So not to much really in the grand scheme of things.

The Lights, Filthy Engine Bay, and Wiring that needs sorting

Another thing that needs doing is her body work though. Underneath she's fairly solid, and most of the shell is, although there are some nasty bits on the windscreen scuttle that I need to get done, and by the O/S rear window. The boot lid lip needs re-fibreglassing again also :(

When it come to panels the Bonnet although recoverable, needs some work doing to the leading edge. Drivers door however has had it and its so bad that the lower half now flaps! The Passenger door has started to go again since its last rust repair, but I believe it also is recoverable.

Both rear wheel arches could ideally do with a bit of work, rust is starting to bubble, from where both have been reversed into walls (not by me ) and although repaired to stop the rust, have never been properly painted to match the car.

So today, I thought I'd start with the bodywork. Badly faded and oxidised paint, to the point where I though all was lost andgreen growth down one side of the car due to nearly 4 years worth of attack from the elements, but with a good wash, I could already see lots of room for improvement Next came the Clay Bar, doing it bit by bit, followed closely by T-Cut, again bit by bit - took me a while to work out how best to use the stuff, but my god is it good! - and then finished off with a layer of wax.

So we started off with this

A close up of just how bad it was

The Badly faded paint, the bodged wheel arch, and a nice none faded bit from where I've removed a broken piece of wheel arch trim.

So I started off by hand washing the car with some B&Q Car Wash Detergent I found laying about in the outhouse, and its surprising the different it has made.
The washed section on the right, and unwashed on the left.

And from a different angle, you and see the cleaned section closest and the line between the two going through the reflection of the butterfly.

Then I started with the Claying, T-cutting and Waxing.

Here are some after shots, first the roof - Pictures don't do it justice.

And in comparison to the top of the boot.

Then I decided to do the boot - By far the worst panel on the car.
First the top section T-cut'ed
attachment.php

Then the rest T-cut'ed
attachment.php

And then the whole boot T-cut'ed and Waxed

Then I moved onto the rear side panel.

Then drivers door and wing.

I've managed to get the bonnet done also, but it was getting to dark to take pictures, and the N/S will have to wait until Friday to get done, but I'm certainly very pleased with the results! :D :slayer:
Small update. Maiden voyage of 40 miles to my mate house earlier today was slow but steady.

New points, condenser, distributor cap & arm along with plugs later and she's still running with no power and timing has to be fully advanced to even run relatively steady at idle. This along with the massive spray back of fuel when applying full throttle has lead my friend and I to believe that the timing belt may well have possibly slipped a tooth. So this is going to be looked at tomorrow.

Any more ideas people? Here's to hoping the next update this time tomorrow is with more of a positive post :)

Right, small update. Long and short, small leak from water pump but not loosing enough to cause any issues.....

Checked the timing this morning, was out about 3 teeth on the cam. Retimed it and OMG, running sweet as a nut :D

So as you do we went out for a nice run, up the A12 , hit 75 by the speedo (yes she's running well) temp sitting dead on 90.....

See where this is going? All going far to well!.......

A slight judder - bluurrrrrrrrrrrrr

All power lost, so RAC to the rescue.

While waiting we checked a few bits - new rotor arm melted and header tank empty  **** arnt I a cleaver sod :bang:

Even though the temp guage never went over 90 we (well my mate who knows what he's doing) suspect the she's run dry on the water seized the head and I switched off when my mate started going on about 'spinning 180' 'gearing sheared' etc etc.

Luckily I purchased a spare 769cc engine from Liquid Knight about 10 days ago by chance, so it might be being fitted sooner rather than later. Going to check the existing engine in her first to see if anything can be repaired.

Will keep you all upto date and upload some pics at some point. Got to love all the action :D

Hey Jonno, just wondered how your mini resto was coming along? (y)

Hi Martin. To be honest it's stopped at the mo, but only because she's on the road and being used as my weekend motor :)

Mechanically all that needs doing now is the exhaust manifold gaskets as one has failed and is blowing slightly.

I've also had to replace the radiator as that sprung a leak, and the driver lower door hinge has given up the ghost and managed to break making getting in and out of the car interesting, but we're getting there.

I've had a quote for my replacement doors to be colour matched as the originals are to far gone, and I'll be getting the other bits of the body work touched up at the same time.

She's made it to Brooklands and Stanford Hall so far, and will be going to Helmingham Hall this year. Will you be attending again Martin?

I'll post so pics when I get a spare 5 min on the computer :)

Hey Jon, thanks for the update. It's great to hear that the car is getting regular use - there's nothing worse for a car than being laid up...especially Italian cars!!! ;) Sounds like you are well on top of this and let's face it, one of the joys of classic car ownership is the constant flow of jobs that need to be done to keep the car going.

I will definately be at Helmingham so will be looking out for you and the little 750.

It's been a funny few months since I sold the Panda. I sold the mark 1 and the Sei Sporting because I was worried about my job and fancied re-training at college for something completely different. However, things have really picked up at work. I am now more settled than I have been for ages, have been given new responsibilities/challenges and having a much better time all round. I needed another car as a daily runner (we have the Golf as the family car) and I got wind of a 20 year old Eunos/MX5 at a giveaway price (and it really was cheap), so I am currently running this. I am looking at this as my Panda Colour substitute. In honesty, I have always fancied some roof down motoring and it was an MX5 or an X19. The X19's just don't seem to be there at the moment and it was the Eunos that came about first.

I am enjoying the roof down motoring at the moment, but I know the time will come again when I opt to sell this and move on to the Panda COLOUR I have always promised myself or even a Panda 4 x 4.

I was also pleased the other week when my mate who is looking for a camper, took my suggestion of a Terra conversion seriously and is now (possibly) in the market for one of those.

My love affair with Italian cars and FIATs in particular continues. I still think the Panda is one of the cutest cars ever made and will no doubt take the plunge again at some point. I can't stay away from this site, I love all the blogs and follow these with interest.

See you at Helmingham - for those interested in an East Anglian classic car show, this is probably the biggest and the best this side of the country and well worth a look! (y)

Hi Martin,

Don't think I've ever seen you post so much in one go. :p

I guess your Mate is already watching this then.......

Good to hear all is going well for you. (y)

Sorry Jon, your thread again. ;)

Time for a small update.

Take 2, tried writing an update on the iPad a few weeks back and it crashed after spending 10min writing it, so I gave up

Took Victoria out for a run today for the first time in a few weeks. Now seems to run ok after the issues in this thread. Although started having some spluttering on the way home, about 2 miles from home. Good news is she's coming with me to see my friend in Woodbridge at the weekend, and he should know for to sort her once and for all :)

Pair of replacement doors were stripped weekend before last, and taken to my body shop guy today for prep work before painting - and Victoria is going in for her mini make over on Tuesday next :slayer:

Both existing front doors are playing up, failed lower hinge on the drivers door is as bad as ever, meaning it nearly falls off of the car when you open it. The passengers now has the opposite affect, and is extremly difficult to open at times. I think the catch/release mechanism has had it. Both of these issues will be rectified once the replacement doors are fitted :p

Also picked up a replacement exhaust manifold gasket today as the outlet for cylinder 4 is blowing - £3 from ebay and 4 miles for the road so I collected it in person. Bargain

I'll get some pic's of Victoria before she goes into the body shop, and some when she comes out all being well for a before and after

what are you doing with the bonnet, that looked like the other big rust spot? is that on for this time too?

The bonnet does indeed have rust issues Andrew, plan for now is to 'tidy' and honestly, bodge it. I have got a replacement, but its the wrong colour, so is waiting until the complete strip down, resto, and respray in a few years before it goes on :)

Went to visit the body shop today on the way home from work. She's nearly done, all that needs doing is the drivers replacement door fitting :D

I collect tomorrow evening on the way home from work. Victoria is a completely different car now :slayer:

Will try and get some pics up over the weekend after I've given her a proper T-Cut, clay, polish and wax :)
