Going back to an old post here but is using a mobile phone for this purpose legal? It would seem to be as you aren't touching it but you are kind of using it and it could be seen as a distraction as the video is playing back as it records.

some time ago when I was 'between' dashcams, I used my phone (galaxy S2). I found that even though it was connected to charge, the video sucked more power than the USB was giving it so after about 3 hours it no longer worked, and that was using a double-life battery.
I also found the phone was getting really hot to the point where it wasn't comfortable to hold.
I also noted a problem with the video whenever a text/email/phone call came through - obviously not a problem to liquid knight since he had no sim card in.

Finally got a result with my DR32. Picked up a new mic from a cheap shop, £1.99 for a desk mount mic for a PC - a small base that you stick to your desk (or somewhere convenient) and a short boom with a mic on the end which you can position.
I think the difference is amazing.

Also discovered how to view the firmware version (poster on dashcamtalk) and from this, other menus.
I've put a video up on YT for anyone else with a dodgy DR32...

Bit boring if you don't have the DR32 - although I believe there are other cams with similar audio issues where a new mic has helped.

If you just want to marvel at my 'McGyvered' mic & hear the difference it makes, skip to 5:44

Edit: The mic is now encased in the bottom of the casing, it sticks out quite a bit - but it's not as bad as it was.
Also moved the new mounting nut to the opposite side after realising that the suction mount will sit on the 'sunshade' part of the screen & the camera will be right alongside this.

well my dash cam is playing up. has a mind of its own and turns its self off.. .how annoying. I've checked the settings and the automatic shut down is labelled as 'off' and I've tried re-formating memory card and also factory reset. still does it after a few hours.
so I'm trying a different card to see if that makes any difference . If I will attempt to mount my Drift hd whilst I try and work out whats going on with this one..ergh.

After nearly having an accident a few days ago where someone pulled out on me at a roundabout without looking right, I'm really considering a dash cam. The only issue is I'm a student and do not have £30 to spare and whilst I'm at Uni I'm not going to be driving much so the purchase wouldn't be worth it for a few years. I was thinking about using my old phone, its an HTC Desire HD and it films in 720p HD. Anyone had any real issues using phones. I'd plan on using it with the battery removed and just running off the 12v ciggy lighter to avoid the phone overheating.

I have nothing to particularly add other than to say I'd quite like a gopro fitted permanently after playing with one on the recent Nurburgring trip in the 500:

After some fool at Cheshire Oaks in a Q4 (hate Audi drivers anyway!) cut me up an caught her rear quarter only a scuff, not worth claiming!. anyone who lives around here knows its the same old story on the way out of the oaks past the Sainsburys petrol station, left lane M53 twrds Birkenhead, right lane A5117 and M53 twrds Chester/m56.

That's the one I'm currently running in the car.

im thinking of getting this one just a few questions

-What size card you use an how many hours it holds 16GB class 4 (seems to suit mine better than a higher class)
-is the stand alone camera for the rear window? if so what the score with cables yes, mine are all tucked into the trim/headlining
-where is it best mounted on the windscreen?
I have a doblo which has a shelf above the screen. Mine is screwed to the underside of the shelf, the unit is amost horizontal with the lens pointing slightly downwards. Best position is certainly as high as you can get with the lens pointing down.
Man thanks
- no idea how much it holds . The cam stores up to 4 files at the same time in folders A (lock, normal) & B (lock, normal). A is for the front cam, B for the rear, Lock is auto saved from g-sensor info or by pressing the emergency button (note, it saves a lock file AND the identical file in the normal folder!).

A 2 min file takes up an average 72.5meg for the front cam and an average 37meg for the rear (lower quality cam).
Each folder can contain 2 instances of the same file (lock & normal), hence the possibility for saving up to 4 files).

I have my g-sensor turned off, even on lowest setting, the lock file fills up quickly with potholes & bumps. this means I have no lock files saved.

Under card properties, it shows 14.6GB available space and 14.4 used. In folder A, normal, I have 143 files taking up 9.6GB. Folder B has 143 files using 4.9GB.

Bear in mind that whilst most files are 1min 59 seconds, there will be times when this won't apply (end of journey, cam could turn off after a few seconds' recording?). these files were over 7 days' journeys to and from work (mostly), so a 16GB card holds about 4.7 hours' recording. On a long journey with no stops, I reckon it might stretch to 5 hours (maybe more)?

Could have fooled me with the prices some are willing to pay in here.

There are some stupid prices for dashcams when you consider the video quality etc that doesn't come with the higher priced machines, seems the premium price is often based on large, shiny cases and gimmicks.

The F70 dual cam isn't 'cheap' but it represents good value IMO.

The mobius & DR32 certainly aren't cheap but video is far superior quality.
The mini dvr 0801 that Techmoan has just reviewed isn't cheap (same price as the mobius) but he reckons it's the best he's tested.
It would've been nice if he could have said how it compared to the mobius (for example, seeing as he's recently reviewed it).

I'm hoping to see some dual cams with good quality video coming out soon.
If only manufacturers would get away from this idea of big lumps of plastic stuck to the screen.
I know this one isn't huge - but still big enough - and designed to keep taking with you?
Seriously? I CBA to mess about.

If nothing decent comes out by the new year, I might seriously consider a couple of mobius cams & possibly some extension lenses.
