cheap dash cam?

after finding out my camera is yet again on the brink
(running off the power supply and not using the bttery at all)

I think i will invest my money into a new one like that

The 60fps version that sludguts vs the 30fps footage makes plates a little bit clearer
So Hopefully i can find a UK seller or wait 300 years for a china one :(

I now have a Mobius, car footage will have to wait I've just strapped it to my plane. :D

Really nice feeling case, came with a holder with one of those standard threaded camera thingy majigs.

To be honest I could see it being a pain to set up for car use with no way to view the screen. It came with no car mounting accessories or power supply either. A quick test of video quality is reassuring though and they even through in a free FPV connection pack. :D

Mine took 6 days from china.

Mine came from China in exactly 7 days, and that's to Jersey not the UK.

There's no point doing a comparisson, the Mobius blows everything I have out the water except Mrs. H's Panasonic HD cam thing that looks like a phone and the GoPro which has more colour.

This is a still shot from a video (screen print), not a photograph:

Best 45 notes I've spent in a long long time!

Add a bit of sturation and it's nearly a GoPro...

And this is how not big it is:

Mobius I ordered last Thursday arrived this morning, that's less than 6 days from China to UK, very impressed.

Haven't fitted to car yet, but have been having a little play indoors, setting up and updating firmware.

For the money it so far seems superb.

Just have to sort out power for car, planning to use wiring to interior light near interior mirror with an old phone charger cannibalised and connected to supplied AV/USB lead. Think will put a little switch in light housing too for on/off when driving/vehicle left parked.

This is for my daily (Peugeot 106), if suitably impressed will get another for wife's Fiat 500.

Just make sure that the interior light is
A - able to handle the current flow
B - that it doesn't turn off after 20mins if its canbus controlled

Ziggy

Thanks for reminder!

Little charger I have taken apart to use is 5V 700mA output (must check its input rating), so not huge current draw, interior light only will be on when door is open so engine likely to be off, so easy enough to switch camera off before opening door.

Power to light there all the time, love little 106 daily, no canbus (not much of anything really!)

battery and charging circuit has died on mine now.. so its time to rip it appart and hack it so it runs directly off the car's battery.

going to remove the pointless 300mA 3.6v lithium based battery, run a USB or other multi core cable (one wire for 12v ignition feed(stepped down to 5 volt as it plugs into the USB port), one wire with a diode for 3.6 - 4.2v to feed into where the battery was soldered onto it, and one for earth)

all i need to do is make voltage limiter / reducer to step down 12v to the voltage of a lithium based cell, 3.6v. it can be up to 4.2 volts as that is what the charging circuit "should" give out. however the internal SMD "Smart" charging microchip has gone open circuit and crispy. after plucking it off the main board of the camera with some light heat and tweezers i managed to get the camera up and running on 5v via the USB port and also by putting 3.6v from another lithium based cell into where the old battery used to be.

i'll be doing a video log on this.. so keep a look out.

sadly no dash cam till then :(

He Says...

Hi, just a quick update, fitted my Mobius this afternoon. Into my Peugeot 106. We’ve been looking at dash-cams on and off for a while, but there’s no way an ‘experimental drilling’ would take place on Ruby first.

Fitting went well, took power from interior light as planned, then through on/off toggle switch, found a 12v USB accessory socket plug thingy, which I took apart. Cut the casing sort of in half and soldered extra wires on to the input end and heatshrink and taped it up. Then Mobius USB plugged straight into that. All neatly tucked up inside light fitting, only thing showing on outside (apart from the camera) is the on/off switch in the light mounting.

Just flick switch on when ready to drive off, camera starts automatically and flick switch again at journeys end.

Also gives the option for leaving camera running when car left parked up.

Used a class 10 32 GB Sandisk micro SD card, which some people have said not to, but card was already ordered before I read about possible incompatibility problems. Having used it on a little drive around this afternoon (about half an hour) I am pleased to report it seems to be working well.

Have just reviewed the footage at home on PC and quality, camera angle and sound all seem to be really impressive, for the money it really is excellent.

Quite amusing watching the journey my wife and I just made on the TV, don't think we'll watch every journey, but the first one had to be done.

She says...

Whilst the keyhole surgery was taking place I mooched around the shops and got myself a bargain in time to call the taxi and we whitter together as we go home and provide some commentary for the audio on the camera.

Wonder how it’ll cope with the wind noise (from both open windows, no air-con!)?

Upon reviewing footage, very good actually. Male voice better against the wind, some of my quieter responses are at a similar pitch to the wind, but on the whole normal speaking was audible.

For the driver the whole device is behind the mirror, to the left of the mirror fixing, so on the passenger side I was very aware of it being three inches to the left of the mirror’s centre - which was in my top right peripheral vision. It wasn’t phased by the numerous potholes and the positioning was central on viewing the playback.

Ruby Cinquecento has the electric sunroof,so hoping to be able to use the power from there to switch it on with the ignition (so thankfully no need for any keyhole surgery for an external switch) to run another canilbalised 12V USB socket to the Mobius.

I’ve had two (adults) run out in front of me in the last three weeks, both who were freakily determind to rid themselves of excess life, which thankfully I foiled. Maybe they just want a good looking car to do the deed, after all red isn’t exactly unmissable, unless you’re colour-blind that is, but as the majority of cars sold in the UK are monochrome (black, white, greys) it can’t be that.

A couple of things which happened on the same journey to work a couple of weeks ago, which I’d love to have captured on camera. Now I’ve been driving for four years on my own, I’m developing a sixth sense – sometimes.

In both cases the camera would have caught both bodies beautifully in frame at the centre bonnet line. I got home and related all this to hubby who had similar tales to tell about his journeys that day, which prompted him to go for the Mobius.

Mine took 6 days from china.

Dom

wish my china shipments came that quick.... Mine never doo!

Ziggy

Generally, 2 - 3 weeks for me. However, after waiting a month for some batts to put in my impact driver I messaged the seller & this was his reply...
"'Hi, the shipment would take approximately 14-21 business days to arrive for most countries in average, but for shipment to your country would take longer than shipping to other countries. From my past experience, it would take longer on the process of the customs declaration due to the strict custom policy of your country. Therefore the shipment may take more than 1 month to arrive sometime. Please allow more time for the delivery. Your item must be still in transit to your address and should be arriving shortly."

"more than 1 month" Say what now? You are having a giraffe - how did you send it, mule train?

Was going to get a mobius - but I'm waiting to see what transpires from user's wishlist on dashcam forums - hoping to see a dual cam system with small remote lenses coming out soon - a system that uses dual SD cards and records in highest quality available.
Mind you, depends on the price - they may decide to put a high premium on such a system, in which case, it'll be two Mobius cams.
Been thinking about mounting options.
I'm wondering about mounting at the top of the screen but as far to the right as I can get away with - so the area is covered by the wipers & the window frame is out of shot.
I feel this option would give a better view of number plates on cars coming towards me (since the cam would be three feet closer to that side of the road).

We say: Very impressed with the clarity from the Mobius; as soon as you pause the recording, writing is clear. After putting the Mobius back in today, we didn't get exactly the same positioning as yesterday so we could move it a mm or two to the right but all in all it got a good panorama. With the 32G SD card and an hour a day's recording approx., it will start to record over the first file in about 20 days time. Plenty of time to take off any video you might want to keep.

She says: Will sit inside Ruby tomorrow and look at all the possible suggestions of routes around the doors, pillars and linings etc to see if an unobtrusive pathway is possible. Don't want exploding wires or any possibility of wires hampering an air-bag deployment, nor wires all over or going round the interior. Apparently it might be able to be linked to the ignition switching, but not keen to have anything opened up really, (even if it is hubby doing the job) so I'm completely on the fence right at the moment! No doubt it would be useful to have a Ruby-Cam as the clarity and panorama are proven, but a clean, OEM type fitting is what I really want. Ruby came with the dashboard Sat-Nav fitting (before they became £50) in case I ever wanted to use one, but I'd rather read a map book beforehand, whilst stationery. Wouldn't feel safe looking at it (you wouldn't catch me using a mobile whilst driving in a million years, and in Ruby I don't have to:)) but back to the point, the Sat-Nav mounting isn't being used. If it could be used for a dash-cam, then I've got questions, the obvious two being i) would the camera be able to see properly at all given how far back from the windscreen it would be (a foot or more at a guess) and b) I have no idea how the power works, is it powered all the time or does it only power up when it engages with the Sat-Nav fitting at the point the Sat-Nav is inserted and gets pushed down into it.

Hi me again.
As I don't seem to be able to find the edit button, just thought I'd say that the 20 hour capacity above is very wrong. I thought I'd read it was 1.5 GB per hour, but it is actually for 10 minutes!
So an hour a day still gives you about 3-3.5 hours of footage, still plenty of space before over writing starts.
Sorry for any confusion:)

Well my camera arrived yesterday, Already had a play and tested the footage out :) all seems well. Just need to figure out what all the buttons do etc. how to save the video (how does this work? 2mins before pressing button and 2 after get saved?)

wired in the Rear camera too :)
