Re: cheap dash cam?cheap dash cam?

What about one of those helmet type cameras, might be easier to install as it could sit on the dashboard (instead of near the rear view mirror) fairly unobtrusively? wonder if you can get one that loop records...

Eg http://www.actioncameras.co.uk/finevu-cr500-hd-in-car-camera

Hmm, says Adrian flux will give you an insurance discount.

looking at some of those in previous posts - not having a screen can mean that positioning them can be very hit & miss. Without a lot of messing about initially, you might end up missing the action you have just paid a fortune to capture.
The last screenless one I had, I had to plug it into my laptop & set it up as a webcam so that i could position it perfectly. Trouble was, when it came to looking at some footage, I didn't get what i wanted as I must have somehow, inadvertantly, knocked the cam slightly :bang::cry:

That one does look neat, thanks for the link. Allot of the others with screens could look like a sat nav to the uninitiated - don't want the car breaking into for the camera!

Found this too: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K9M-HD-720P-Smallest-In-Car-Dash-Camcorder-Camera-Video-Register-Recorder-DV-DVR-/370707645058?pt=UK_Gadgets&hash=item564fe5c282

Looks identical to the Blackvue DR100? ... hmm 1.3 MP instead of 2MP.

Somehow this came up in my eBay search results, brilliant what people try and flog on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COLOR-PHOTO-J-3893-WOMAN-IN-PASSENGER-SEAT-OF-CAR-KODAK-CAMERA-/271172551175?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item3f2324c207

Interesting the way they keep promoting the 15% saving on insurance - I have yet to have an insurer offer anything when I mention a dashcam - even the insurer that saved a fortune when I offered up my footage.

They've said it's Adrian Flux ;)

i guess ones with out a screen are for people with video-in on their head units?

No, it's point and shoot (and hope). (y)

Techmoan did a review of this (type of) cam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDS3Ih3KHWw

Don't know about you guys but my experience of any insurance company that offers a special deal for xxx often come in dearer.
When I was <25 some insurers offered special deals - my car wasn't fantastic & yet those 'deals' were way over the top.
Bought my youngest a moped for his daily commute, again, loads of companies out there offering deals for 17y/o newbies and again, most were way too high (to the point where a car would've been the cheaper option).
Even last year when I looked to renew my car insurance, a certain company offering discounts to FF members came in well over other quotes - and when I mentioned the FF discount "Oh, we've already applied that" - strange because I hadn't mentioned it until now.

You can plug them into the HU as well of course ;)

Not sure about those that come with a rear camera and long cable, seems like a hassle hiding that cable. May as well buy two cameras (if your boot has a 12V point)?!

There are pros and cons. If you look at some of the footage users have submitted, the cams aren't too bad for the money, it also means that the only thing in your rear window is a tiny cam. I have to say that I do like the size of the front camera on these things as well. I have mine mounted on the front parcel shelf rather than on the screen - so it's far less obvious to others.
The only downside that I have found is the file storage. It seems that the best cards to use are lower class rating as these, apparently, cope better with having two lots of data written to two locations at the same time.

Very tempted to order that DR32 camera sludgeguts

Think I may literally get killed by the OH though having just spent all of her money on the 500L :)

I've ordered one to use at work - to replace the crappy cheapo job I'm forced to use at the moment (see dashcam videos!)

Has anyone got any night vision footage to post? How does the camera record a decent image without the light from the infra red LEDs reflecting back from the glass?
