Re: The Dash Camera Thread (Videos)

:yeahthat: It's probably only a 30FPS jobby.
That's what i thought. I've just found a setup which is closer to my ideal - small, thin monitor, dual cam (both external) but sadly, the cams in the ad look quite large & I reckon the system is still low tech (I posted a link in the dashcam thread).

I reckon it won't be long before we see really high res pics @ 60fps (full Hi definition?) coming within our budget.

Mine came with both. but I use the sticky tape mount as it sits extremely flat to the screen and is less obtrusive.

knock it down 40 quid and tell how to pay import tax id get one

Knock it down £40, record in hi-def @ 60fps, use 32GB SDHC class 10 cards. . . The last few cams I've had from the orient have not been boxed, just bubble wrap & jiffybag. the customs declaration generally says 'gift'. just looked at the last one I got. They ticked 'gift' & detailed description said "toys". They put the value down as US$10.
AFAIK, customs won't bother with anything under £20 - although a few years back I bought a camcorder batt for £19.99 & they wanted to sting me for almost as much again.
When I questioned it, they said it was because it was a battery. Batteries also have different customs rates depending on their content (LiOn, NiMh, NiCad etc). I eventually got away with not paying - they had charged me incorrect rates - they were also trying to charge me customs on total cost (£19.99 with free delivery), I told them that postage (according to the stamps) was $xx which would have reduced the cost of the batts.
Mind you, years ago, I bought a camcorder from the US & didn't get charged anything! I think it's luck of the draw.

i never got one, i got skint instead. still want one and dont know what to get!
For now, I would go for the F70N - seems to be as good as it gets for a great price - at the moment.

Personally, I would try to find the money - these things can be a real insurance saver.
If you have a smartphone, download a free dashcam app. Bit of a PITA but at least you'll have some coverage.

Things seem to be going in the right direction (AFAIC).

Separate DVR with screen - looks a nice size - could be stored in a glovebox (wonder if the vanity mirror could be taken out & this put in its place?)

The cameras shown on the box are great as they are so unobtrusive & not at all obvious to would-be thieves - a real shame they look to have replaced those with some horrible looking cameras - assuming those suction mounts are tandard size, the cameras must be enormous (n)
Also, the specs aren't very clear.

I asked the seller about the reason why the cams in the ad were different to the ones on the box.
seemingly, the dvr doesn't have a mic, those small cams don't have a mic. The huge, ugly cams DO have a mic:confused:

does the dual camera one record from both at the same time?

Yeah.
The SD card has 3 files; Lock, A and B (might be dcimA and dcimB, can't remember off the top of my head).
Lock stores files you have protected (by pressing the appropriate button on the device) and these cannot be overwritten.
A stores images from the front cam, B from the rear.

Although people say to use high class SD cards, I seem to remember reading somewhere the other day, that a class 6 and above isn't good for writing simultaneous files.
So with a single cam, class 10 would be excellent as the unit just dumps everything at once but with a dual lens, a card under class 6 would be better. I didn't really understand the techy explanation so it didn't sink in.
Iirc it was a Wiki article.

This might explain why I had problems with files corrupting on my new 32GB card - the older card I replaced it with (16GB) would be a lower class (although I haven't checked this out (and probably couldn't read the writing even if I had a microscope))
