My driving instructor didn't have a rev counter in his W reg Fiesta, so I guess I've never really know what to look for on them. On my first lesson I asked him where it was and he said that he didn't want one as 90% of his pupils in his old car spent most of the time checking the RC when they need to pull away quick at junctions! Bit odd!

I sometimes drive my mum's Corsa, but barely look down at the rev counter.

Why are they not fitted as standard on every car? Surely they can't affect prices that much.....can they?

I must admit I drive a car by the rev counter. Its something you get used to I guess, but obviously by looking at it you find the sweet spot to change gear for the rate of progress you want to make. Its much harder to replicate with as much accuracy without one. Obviously its very useful for when you are redlining the engine, so you can time your change up points perfectly.
 
The best bit about the rev counter is watching the needle bend round to 7k rpm - strangely satisfying (or maybe that's just me! :ROFLMAO: )

It's useful for knowing where you are in the car's power band (when the needle is vertical usually indicates where peak torque is developed) and for rev-matching, but once I get used to a car I tend to use it less for that as you get a feel for it.

A HUD rev counter is probably one of the coolest things in a car I've driven :D

My ADI always taught me to listen to the engine. I always go through the gears quite quickly to get into 4th. Only problem with this is that I tend to rev too much in 1st to get up to speed and find that the car lunges forward slightly when going into 2nd- this only happens in Panda.........:(
 
That's a good point! The other problem is in these exec cars with masses of sound proofing where you just can't hear the engine at all! I guess most of them will be auto's though so it doesn't make a whole load of difference :ROFLMAO:

True!

In my mum's Corsa, the engine sounds like a tank!! (It's a 3 cylinder model) So I can hear that engine over the radio. I gues I just change gear on instinct.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? Am I simply revving too much in 1st?
 
My Active has height adjustable steering.

Wasn't dissing you for choosing the Active, was only highlighting the fact that the (much) higher-spec Dynamic is 'only' a few hundred pounds more. Although I don't know when you purchased your's and what the price differences were at the time. As I reported elsehwere, I did drive a 1.1 Active and was impressed overall - it is still a Panda!

Of course, on the Continent (and possibly other markets) you can get the stripped-down ACTUAL model. Probably makes the most sense for ultra budget motoring - but I think us Brits demand a little more :)

I never knew that, It would be interesting to know how basic, budget is :eek:

(Also out of interest, where abouts in Croydon are you? I used to be Thornton Heath)

Yeh I'm nr Thornton Heath but Lowestoft looks good (recently made famous thanks to Gene Simmons!).

Here's the Panda model line-up available in Italy with prices in Euros....not sure what you don't get with the ACTUAL model although I did read somewhere that it comes without electric windows (perish the thought!!).

Yeh I'm nr Thornton Heath but Lowestoft looks good (recently made famous thanks to Gene Simmons!).

Look out for my White mk2 Panda between 22nd-31st of the month in and around the area then, as I'm down staying at friends.

The Active over here is £6995 isn't it? assuming that then the lowest one over there is about £5500 in our money I think, Only roughly guess, so could be miles out:p

Well the converter I used shows the ACTUAL as being over £7k so not cheap at all!!!
The good ol' pound must be strong then?? I was quoted £5195 OTR for a brand new ACTIVE recently - not bad huh?

Will def look out for you, although I think I'm off on a cricket tour around that time - can't wait :)

I had 3 old shape Pandas at various times - base 750, Bianca and a 4x4. Loved them all but did prefer the Cinquecento 800cc, fab car in turquoise!
