Technical 2004 Panda 1.1 active - Whining issue?

Just moved it into our car park at work. The engine sounded so much quieter when it started up, less rough. From the limited drive I had it didn’t squeal at all and sounded much better. I will test later on.

So far so good.... driven it home from work and even when really working the engine, no squeals at all. It sounded an awful lot better.
The real test will be tomorrow morning when it is stone cold, but so far, so good!

Pleased to report... the squeal has gone!
Cold started it earlier and the fan belt chirped slightly, but it’s getting a new one tomorrow anyway. The main issue has completely gone.

Now time to pile some miles on the Panda

Be sure the alternator bearings are checked while the cam belt job is done. Dry or loose bearings can make a racket until they warm up.

The water pump appears to have been the issue, the noise has now gone after the cambelt and water pump change.

Now you have the wee beasty running nicely, due to the original condition of the oil.
I would do another oil and filter change at about 1000-1500 miles, this will help remove any of the remaining sludge and dirt from the first oil change, giving your engine fresh blood for many efficient miles, I get 48-52mpg out of my 1.1 Active, and that's on mixed roads.

This tank of fuel is definitely worse than the first, I’m at 90 miles and the gauge is reading 2/3s full at most.
I hope a good few runs and cleaning the crap out and also the rest of the servicing I have to do will help a lot

Low 40's was normal for our 1.1

90,000 miles of that

It will improve marginally in warmer weather.

We ran 14" alloys on ours..as it made it feel far more 'planted'

Mpg wasnt obviously effected.

Well our last tank started with a 50 mile dual carriageway run when we picked it up and then shorter runs, that got us 42mpg.
This tank seems 20-30 miles worse so far than the last.
But I’ll hold judgement until it is fully serviced!

How ancient are your tyres.. ?

The tyres look decent actually...
It has had a good few new parts and hoses under the bonnet, just weird that regular servicing was scrimped on.
The old lady that owned it shipped it off to the garage for every MOT and I think assumed it was serviced at the same time.

Just about to start changing some bits on the car.
Hopefully the old spark plugs don’t look horrific...
The car started lovely first thing this morning when it was -1, which was nice to see!

So tank 1 and tank 2 are different journey types so wont be comparable, you wont really know until tank 4 or 5 as your mileage becomes regular and you are used to the car.

Our 1.2 dynamic
my kids get early 40's
My Wife gets 44 to 46
i get 50 to 90.

Thats not our ages by the way, its just that i do the longer journeys normally 100 ish miles and my wife does 13 miles to work and the kids run around the town.

Finished the work on it for the day.
I’ve done:
- alternator belt
- spark plugs
- cleaned the throttle body as much as I can without taking it off (that’ll be for another day when I have more time and can do the IACV as the same time. It was very gummed up!)

Car runs nicely!

I’m going to worry about fuel economy after a few tanks, as suggested above. Plus I still need to put some engine flush in as it all need cleaning out as it hasn’t been properly driven much in its life.

On short journeys, this current tank looks like it’ll be low 30s, so that doesn’t seem quite right... but time will tell!

I meant to ask, is the 12V socket easy to change? Ours is a bit dodgy, it doesn’t stay on unless you hold what ever is plugged in, down into it.
Haven’t had a fiddle yet, but looks like the trim around it comes off easily enough?
