Well its voting time tomorrow and i very rarely do so, but i'm going to make a special effort, (the portacabin is at the end of my road) just wondering is anyone else?, and who for against etc,, any famous mp's in your borough! Ant!

i wont vote until i have someone to vote for, not voting is a vote for 'other', the most powerful vote you can have.

the main reason i'm not voting in the local election is all the crap i've had posted through my letter box the last few weeks. its a load of lies, false promises and finger pointing. i'm not happy about the waste of paper, but the bollix printed on it is bejond a joke. what a pointless childish popularity contest.

they focus on issues such as graffiti (there is none), and sticking flowers on roundabouts. WTF!!!

Thats all i get, the same leaflet saying "we have 2 candidates who actually live in the area......... the opposition don't.... blah blah blah..........

I still can't see anyone winning by 1 vote, so who cares if i don't vote. The one guy who came to the door for a chat wasn't much cop either, anyone who can be blagged away by me in under 5 minutes is not gonna have a leg to stand on!!!!!

All the political parties are as bad as each other, though there is most definitely a difference in their 'badness'.

I rarely vote 'for' a party. I tend to vote tactically, making sure the party I least want in power has less chance of getting in.

At the moment I know what Labours policies are (pretty obvious as that's what gets implemented as Government policies!), the LibDems are fairly clear on what they want to do/ change but the Tories? I still don't know what their practical policies are other than to slag off Labour and make impossible promises...

I just wish all the parties would spend more time explaining their policies (and how they are going to pay for them) rather than bitching at each other and making smarmy comments in the House of Commons. :shakehead

erm, i think we need to clarify how this country is run.

in the uk, policy is mostly decided and implemented through the house of commons (stongest part of parliament), a multiparty arrangement of 646 elected members (called MPs).

MPs are from many parties:
Conservative (196)
Democratic Unionist (9)
Independent (2)
Independent Labour (1)
Labour (352)
Liberal Democrat (63)
Plaid Cymru (3)
Respect (1)
Scottish National (6)
Sinn Fein (5)
Social Democratic & Labour Party (3)
Ulster Unionist (1)
Speaker and Deputies (4)

the MPs all debate together on new laws and changes to existing ones, they decide and agree taxes. obviously the more seated MP's a party has the more influence it has over the house.

when you think of it that way, the conservatives are about 30% reponsible for what gets decided at present even though they are not in power, but you never hear of them getting blamed.

even though labour have a bigger say, that doesnt mean they are to blame for anything. not all of labour's 352 MP's would agree on anything, in fact they never do (remember the split within labour over iraq). in theory 90% of labour MPs would need to agree on something for it to overrule the others, and that never happens. the country is run by MP's, not parties, and you never know what an MP will do, regardless of political stance.

the government is only responsible for the management of the state, for example they collect taxes but they dont decide them.

I had not seen or heard from them until yesterday when they all came out a knocking!! ME ME ME!!!! i must admit the guy who's in at the moment is labour and hasn't done a bad job tameside was judged as the north wests best council 4 stars, one of the lowest council tax bills below 3% 160m for schools and a 20m acadamy where my daughter will attend, we got the go ahead for the metrolink new swimming pool centre (but they had to knock the old one down for the metrolink) and they have started on the 100m canalside regeneration with a 50 canalboat moaring centre, bars floating stage for bands, sounds bloody great even my house has doubled in 5 years the only downside is man city football ground is only down the road so i'm surrounded by them blues UNITED!!!! DROYLSDEN WHOOOO!!!!!! the bloke in the BNP came second last time and wasn't far behind! Ant!

Labour hold more seats than ALL the other parties put together. Therefore the majority of the time Labour Government policies get passed in the House of Commons without problems. It would take ALL of the opposition MP's AND some of Labours MP's to vote against a Labour lead policy for it to fail. This has rarely happend under the present Government.

Iraq was one of the few examples when there was a revolt and many Labour MP's voted against their own party.

In general what gets passed in the House of Commons under the 1997 to present Labour government is what Labour proposed in the first place. Therefore what gets passed as law is basically Labour policies.

I'd still like to know how the Tories are going to pay for the NHS/ Public Services (which they ran down to buggery under Thatcher/ Major) without raising taxes...

Anyone see that there have been 20,000 less postal ballots in Birmingham? :p

Best way to lodge a non vote is to spoil your ballot paper. Don't vote and you just get recorded as lazy and couldn't be bothered. Spoil your paper and they know people are unhappy.
