Thr brake pads I posted about the other day arrived. Bang on definitely Fiat genuine parts.
I do wonder why they were covered in Warning fragile tape though. lol

At the projected time they will be required Noop will be 15 and I will be 77.....
Nudge will be another 8 years downn the road. Ruby will be 20 and So its up to Peanut the only one that does⁸ full time work. Possibly 5 years. I shall probablyend up re selling them at a big profit.

3rd Axle treated today. How much more difficult is the 4x4 to do! And used more BH too. I definitely prefer the Bilt Hamber UB50 TO THE UC50. it seems to cover more evenly. I now need two more cans. 1 to finish the 4x4 and one for our 2017 new addition / stock. NOOP is 2019 and gsraged, usually under washed monthly in the winter. It was more rusty than the 2014 car. Once the UC50 was applied itseemed to darken up where Dinitrol was applied when it was new suggesting some was still there. Its probably worth saying that the thing that was most in need of treatment were clips in the fuel filler pipe. Im need to do some more working from the wheel arches before I can really say its done for a while. but the back of this job is broken thank heavens. Its goi g to stink while it burns off the back box. I may haveto go back and clean the backbox off.m

For those who have read this far... A little tip. We are suffering that awful waxy smearing of windscren, made worse by spraying underbody stuff inside the garage. So, I decided to clean a couple of screens. I have found one of the best solutions is Clay bar. Today I used clay bar in the rain, and added vinegar moderately liberally. Its way the best and most effective method yet I think about 95% of the muck is gone. All the wash and wax put on Peanut by valeters prior to us buying it, that was evident by runs down the screen, is gone and the screen looked crystal clear. We will find out tonight. Also clay blocked the wiper blades and boy were they dirty. Time for a box of new blades.

I took Ruby back to the garage that did the cambelt. Noise is still there and horrid. They said they will redo it FOC. I have asked them to change the AUX belt and leave the old one as a spare so some of the work I shall pay for. Unless a tweak of the tensioner shuts it up its going to be Fiat Parts and I will pay difference between Gates and Fiat Prices. Also agreed that while the offer of FOC is excellent I feel its not all on them so we will negotiate a settlement that leaves us both reasonably happy. May be re tensioning the thing will quiet it down. If I pay £150 and its resolved I will be happy.... just and hope this will bee enough to maintain good relations with the garage. ATM I just dont trust it.

Walked to the shop...

Saw a fully sign written new Astra in a 73 plate parked up I assume it's a courtesy car given normally there's a grandland parked there.

Sign writing on the side all trumpeting the joys of the electric astra and how much it could be had for.

Interior displaying a 6 speed manual...erm that's not even a hybrid.

Given my current car shopping dilemmas this felt relevant..

A "traditional" estate just looks "right" compared to these SUV things. The Skoda Scala shares it's floor pan and running gear with the Kamiq but I thought the Scala looked just so much more attractive and, I think, actually has slightly more useable room in the boot (trunk to you Cheest)

The latest configuration for LED lights on the 1973 Solex has turned out to be the correct one. YAY!

The reg/rec I was going to use became the victim of an unread data sheet. Too soon old, too late smart. AC input on that one was 23V. AC output on the lighting coil is 28VAC. Over drove the bridge rectifier and let the smoke out.
The latest and greatest unit I'm using is based on an LM2596HV thingy and can take up to 50VAC. It works great and it was cheap. I got two for less the $10 shipped. I'll put some miles on this Solex and if it works out okay, I'll use the second one on the yellow Solex.

As for the smoked board, the bridge rectifier sacrificed itself to save the rest of it. The DC side is fine. I replaced the smoked part and will probably use that one on my high dollar bicycle with the hub dynamo and dual halogen lamps. It takes so much juice to run those dual lamps that I had to run a battery taillight. LEDs will fix that.

So after changing the rear lights seals there was still a slight seep in the boot on the near side, so I suspected the rear boot seal as that's the only other thing it could be as all the arches are solid etc, so I looked at the seal & it was a bit sloppy all over especially in the corner where the water was getting in, so I went onto Eper to get the part number for the seal & saw the price which was £60.45 exc VAT which from experience Fiat will charge a lot more than that 😂 so on Wednesday night I was just having a look on eBay & came across a boot seal out of a scrap car for just £15 delivered & the seller claimed the car was dry inside with no leaks so I took a chance for £15 rather than get stitched up by Fiat 😂 & it turned up this morning, took it out the box & I'm impressed so far as it looks in better condition than the one off the car just had to clean off a little mildew & it came up like new, it's a really nice tight snug fit on the car unlike the sloppy old one so hopefully that'll now solve the water leak once & for all 🤞

Now just to give her a quick polish, wax & a quick going over on the interior tomorrow ready for Festival Italia on Sunday, I wanted to change the badges before Sunday as I managed to find all 4 but they haven't all turned up yet so that might have to wait until later on unless they turn up tomorrow

I have noticed when moving these seals that they seem to be fitted with a sealant on some. If it still leaks try wiping a thin layer of Plumbers Mate white over the body edge and fit the seal over. This stuff is like thin putty and dries slowly similarly. It more or less flakes off if rubbed once dry but would fill any slight imperfections. Im impressed with how you have worked on this little car and how good it now looks. Its getting to be a real classic.

Thanks Panda Nut I'm really impressed with her as well, so is my dad even if he doesn't say so but I can tell 😂 also he's told my step mum 🤣 if it still has a small leak I'll try the plumbers mate, she's definitely come a long way since I got it out of the collectors barn though, I'm still quite shocked myself with how good it's come up 😂, I got a few looks from family & friends when I first bought her as if to say what have you brought & why 😂 as the paintwork was all rough, covered in dust etc, the bloke I brought her from said that a couple of people had already walked away before I looked at her because of the surface rust, I looked all over her, crawled all around underneath with my torch, decided it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting 😂, decided there & then after a quick test drive she was coming home with me & had to be saved as under all the dust there was a little gem waiting to come out, also with the mileage it's barely run in, so after I'd spent about the equivalent of 4 days on her polishing, waxing, wire brushing all underside & subframe, treated it all then waxed the entire underbody, greased the entire clutch mechanism etc, the family & friends who doubted her originally were shocked at how well she'd come up & I said that was what I saw under all that muck & why I got her 😂 she's going on her first long trip up to the outskirts of Liverpool on Tuesday after Festival Italia at the weekend. There's still a few little fiddly jobs to do like the rear dampers at some point when I get round to it, they're functioning & not leaking but they are quite crusty I have genuine Fiat ones ready to go on, the weatherstrip on the driver door as it keeps popping out when doing the window up 😂 & the gearstick is like a wooden spoon in a bowl of trifle although the lever body isn't cracked & there's no problem selecting any gears but I'll get a new gear lever body with all new bushes etc as the price for the whole thing using a genuine part isn't much different to getting just the repair kit, I think it's just gone a bit sloppy with age & that should be it, I've become really fond of her & she's going to be a keeper as there's nothing modern that even interests me, even if she ever does need a little welding in some years down the line but hopefully I can hold that off for quite a while yet 😂

Thanks for the tag @portland_bill 👍

It hasn't actually worked though 🤔

In other news.. My association with said Driveline manufacturer Is about to end..
(10 years..)

Still like the idea of the 500e, but the odd bugs that FIAT UK seem glacial in investigating doesn't bode well with a £10 k / £30k spend 😒

A couple of pics from the Sycamore (IL) Steam Show yesterday.

We took our youngest granddaughter and she had a great time. She decided that she likes sauerkraut(🤮)and was attacking Mrs.Cheests' brat to get it. We took the DeSoto, which gets us into the show for one admission. I parked that in with the other antique cars. The wind was from the wrong direction and sawdust from the sawmill operations was covering the cars. I guess I have to wash it before next weeks big car show in Hampshire, IL.

No idea why the link does not work, it is a simple link to YouTube, with no restrictions.

Are you retiring now, or moving on, or is your employer changing its links? PM if not public info, of course.

The Tag didn't show as a forum message.... Looks like it should have worked? 🤔

GKN are closing their UK R+D centre for E. Motor in vehicles ( hybrid)

Not sure what I am going for next..

automotive development is certainly tricky now.. Most European car manufacturers are walking slowly backwards from full E. V.

Maybe full motorsports.. Or Green Energy development, see what's out there 🤔

FIAT wise..
The next Generation appear to be lined up for the PSA kit.. (We had one of theirs in years ago.. On a 10 reg plate IIRC - So seen plenty of development)

Prepped the car today ready for Festival Italia tomorrow, & fitted 3 out of 4 the new badges I'd brought as annoyingly the new old stock SX badge I got of ebay for the boot lid hasn't turned up in time for tomorrow so that'll go on when it eventually decides to turns up which will hopefully be soon as the old badge looks tatty compared to the 3 new ones 😂

I'm feeling a disproportionate sense of smugness with myself this morning!
Why? because I've had an ongoing problem with the padlocks on my shed rusting up:

P1110934.JPG

The top one gets a wee bit of protection from the roof overhang but the bottom one gets water inside it. The shed is over 40 years old and that's the third bottom lock. Anyway, last week I was checking up on the lockups at my deceased brother's work premises and decide to look inside, which I haven't done yet. The padlocks had cut out bits of milk carton covering them which I couldn't figure out why at the time but now I'm home and thinking about water penetration on my own padlocks, I completely see why he did it. So I cut up an old milk carton and tried it on the bottom lock:

P1110936.JPG

I'm inordinately pleased with the outcome and am now going to make one for the top as well. which looks like this:

P1110937.JPG

Funny how such a simple thing can give such a feeling of achievement - Thanks Mike, another thing which will remind me of you every time I unlock my shed!
