Ah yes Melrose...right on the coast of... Scotland.

Wait let me check the map...

Absolutely nothing to do with the big yellow sea spray simulators that run more often in colder areas.
Dont start me on road salting

Well back from Cornwall just now…Jeeze it’s gone downhill since I was last there!
Phone signal worse than here in rural North Yorkshire and, for a tourist area, everything is shut or shuts really early, it’s not like visitors dry up, it’s like the locals (not really, see below) can’t be bothered…
Apart from the farmers, everyone in the service/tourism is from London, they either run the bars, restaurants, b&bs, or own them, or they are failed accountants and are now ‘artists’ selling crap. I knew that some places had become London enclaves and that the young and natives had been priced out of the market, but it’s so much worse than up here, a sad state of affairs

I used to say to people from up country that "where they come from must be a dump as all you b***tards come down here;)"
Some of them realised I was joking.
Mind you my parents came from London and my grandparents from Yorkshire.:););)

Just come back from flue jab, over in minutes, unlike what it took to book.
Now told need Shingles jab and already booked for Covid jab, what is wrong with joined up thinking and doing it in one go?
After all they give children multiple inoculations in one go. I never even got a lollypop:)

Daughters new house. I looked at the drains, and oh dear 50% full of soil and the row of 50 ft conifers I have removed were less than 3m away too . With fear and trepidation I decided to put the rods down them. After a bit of pushing and shoving my daughter announces Ive pushed a birds nest out of the pipes. Thankfully its just fine tree roots and they pipes all cleared I emptied the garden wate rbutt down the pipe and it all disappeared. After scaring the neighbours by lifting the manholes everywhere its clear all the debris has gone so now its bog fitting time. The soil pipe was set into the concrete slab when the house was built, and its in the wrong place too far into the room so I shall push the new pipe out through the wall and connect to the main outside, thankfully its less than 18inches from the wall so it should be straightforward. I'm aiming for a working toilet by wednesday. Cracks in the blockwork are staggering but seem to be from poor build rather than much else, so have a big stack of brick stitching rods, and after shoving these in, will board the exterior walls with the insulation backed plasterboard killing two birds with one dirty great boulder of a job. I suppose I need to do the electric work first. 1960's electrics are somewhat primative so a lot of updating is needed. Once the new smart meter is in, they can connect to a my new consumer unit which I will not mount exactly at work top height in the kitchen.... With a new RCD mains breaker and switch in, I will feel safe to proceed the rest should not be worse than messy. I have time to identify which wires go where in the meantime. Theold back boiler and defunct gas fire have to go, and all the redundant pipes from who knows when as well, so it's mondays job to find someone locally to deal with it. I may do my non-mains gas work here, but I aint touching anything connected to the mains!! On the whole I am pleased we dont seem to have bought any really bad problems and hope she may be in the house by march.

I hurt so much today, that a day off is needed to recover. Im too old for this stuff.....

So you will be finished by tea time?;););)

Best wishes for Wednesday.
We'll have a pipe band set up for Friday, and a film crew to document your dancing a jig on your new hip.
Take a laptop or tablet, log onto the wi-fi, and keep posting. Otherwise the boredom may drive you nuts, instead of us having to do it.

Good idea the dancing bit, if you rattle you will know they have left some tools behind;););)

As I posted here before my visit to the hospital I thought I'd just post here again to say I attended the hospital early - 7.00 am - on Wednesday morning and was taken in for surgery around 11.00 am. They did the procedure under a spinal block rather than a general which I was very nervous about as I have a problem with my spinal cord. In the event though everything went very smoothly and I now have a new hip! I was worried that, without a general, I might be aware of the procedure being carried out - being tugged and "messed about" but I was heavily sedated and can remember nothing after the anaesthetist numbed me up and injected the sedative until I awoke in recovery. Got home late yesterday after two overnights (3 days in the hospital) and I have to say the entire medical experience was superb. I've paid into the NHS all my life - as have most of us - and I'm still much in favour of it but I just couldn't wait the 6 months referral to see a consultant and subsequent 3 year wait for surgery as my condition was deteriorating rapidly and I was in increasing pain. Having this done privately has been a real eye opener. The hospital was more like a hotel and maintained immaculately. I had a private room more like a hotel room but with a very modern automated bed and large bathroom with shower which wouldn't have shamed a 5 star hotel. The support staff, cleaners, nurses, physio people, catering staff - the meals in particular deserve mention - and even the technician who came in to make sure the landline, unlimited complimentary calls, telephone was working correctly. (I don't have a smart phone) were all superb. The medical side was beyond superb and very efficient with almost no waits during assessment and preparation then into surgery and I was back in my room for about 2pm. All this accomplished in a very calm and reassuring manner which all contributed to reducing the stress of the procedure. Two days of intensive follow up with visits from the consultant, anaesthetist, physio and nurses then assessment for what aids I might need for the recovery period.

The only fly in the ointment was a small mix up over payment as my insurance - through a previous employer - was paying some of it and I was paying the remainder. They thought the insurance was paying it all and got a bit "upitty" when the full amount wasn't payed. Easily solved with my credit card although the holiday fund is now looking pretty silly!

Just have to hope the other one doesn't need done anytime soon as the piggy bank is looking pretty anorexic right now!

I must be the balancer, I never sound orf.....

ever
on anything

er indoors just looked at my screen

and said rubbish....
Mrs j once asked what I was doing on my laptop and I just told her about the forum and the nice bunch of folk I converse with on it. She laughed and said "you might think you're talking to a load of old farts like you but in fact it's as likely to be some scammer or dolly bird in Russia or Nigeria who's lining you up to diddle you out of our life's savings"! Good job you don't let me have a credit card then eh dear?

Had the shingles jag years ago and have been told you only get it once? Not quite sure I believe that? Anyway, booked in for combined flue/covid jag on Mon 21st this month some time ago and now hoping I'll be mobile enough to attend. If I miss it I don't know what happens then?

Good to hear it went well Jock, 👍

Out panda-driver just had a similar experience

Got the priority one sorted now, might get the other done as and when the Waiting List catches up
I haven't officially removed myself from the NHS waiting list for this one so maybe when that comes round in 3 years time I'll be able to get the other one done on the NHS - or maybe not?

Had a very interesting conversation with the consultant about waiting times and he said that without a really major intervention he can't see any way they can catch up on the lists. He said they are working flat out right now just standing still and just about holding things steady but not catching up at all.
