Both my boys supplemented their incomes for a while by doing supermarket deliveries and drove automatic Mercs. They did talk about them breaking down quite a lot.
There’s known issues with the 2.3 iveco ‘semi autos’ largely software/sensors, but Terry, the haulage guy, says it’s not as bad as the mercs one…which was odd as I thought they were the same boxes…but like all the reviews for the Ka were better than the 500 in UK press, but the differences were body’s and interiors on all but the sports/Abarths
He did state that the mercs chassis were nowhere near as robust as they were and the iveco ones were better preserved

You're right, we don't. My daughter is always berating us about it. The pneumonia has scared them all a bit though and there's been a number of concerned phone calls. I mentioned that I'd probably have to try to get to the shop tomorrow as we're running low on bread and milk. Just before I went in for the hip we did a "super size" shop so we're actually well stocked for a siege but the milk and bread are low. Anyway, about 15 minutes after putting the phone down the door bell rang. It's Tesco woosh with a plastic bottle of "green" milk and a loaf of "Half and Half" bread. Oh well, that will be my daughter's doing as I've seen them eating this bread when we've stayed with them. Mind you she's near Salisbury Wilts where as the boys are both up here? I'm now wondering what that cost her for a loaf and the milk delivered to the door in such a short time.
When you mentioned the the loaf of bread I thought you meant the Scottish tradition of a half and a half (or a 'hauf and a hauf' ;)

Aye, a beer and a whisky served at the same time. Some pour the whisky into the beer but I prefer the beer first, drunk quite slowly followed by the whisky tossed down in a oner! It can really creep up on you if you have several in quick succession. All sadly in the past for me now because of the big tummy op a number of years ago.

better that than you buggering up your new hip trying to fight to the shop when you don’t need to, until I read this I’d considered offering to send a delivery to your door myself, good your kids are on the ball and looking out for you so well.

I do a lot of training with three supermarket chains, all using Merc Sprinters, two use autos, one uses manuals. They are generally robust, but do develop lots of little faults. Sadly, the drivers vary widely in their vehicle knowledge, so many faults do not get reported until they develop into something bigger, or the van breaks down. Some managers, with little vehicle knowledge consider issues trivial, until the van breaks. However, I've seen many near the 200k mark, still going well, apart from the steering wheel which disintgrates by then. (Usually replaced by one from a crashed van)
The later (current) Sprinter is FWD, and also feels less robust.

The Iveco, I think uses an automated manual, whereas the Sprinter feels like a traditional torque converter transmission.

Im sure you are worth it. A couple of weeks and you should be a lot nearer normal and hopefully Mrs J back on her feet too. Im glad your daughter saved you the walk!

Well the new drain pipe for daughters bog is in, and the man hole rebuilt. I hope it works or its another huge trial to re route. Its in a better state now than it was the man hole was showing its age. Gas man came too. The new unused boiler needs £300 of parts before I will find out if its a keeper. We are moving though so will get there. I got trade on my windows and doors as they finally linked all my spending so new french doors, a new UPVC glazed porch, garage window and 1 massive bedroom window cost 2700 which seems Ok. Im already on with brickwork stitching so should be on with applying insulated wall boardsnext week and hopefully installing new radiators ready for the boilerrmans return.. I can tell you, I REALLY hurt now!

There’s a lot of crossover and a lot of the semi auto, auto + manual and robotised are all just ‘manufacturers speak’ for exactly the same thing.
Interestingly, I looked at an Eaton gearbox for airport tug and it said ‘NHV’ on the plate and was told it was exactly the same as a DAF, Volvo, Scania, Iveco, Man, etc etc it was a fully preselect box and no torque converter, it had multiple sliding plates…these are heavy engineered gearboxes that run even heavier engineered hydraulic motors…I suspect wehn they say ‘it’s the same box’ I’m guessing they mean quarry, mines, tugs etc…hydraulic drive is the norm for big stuff but, to a point, slow operation or heavily geared

If you’ve ever rebuilt one of these, or worse a ‘track motor,’ you’d understand what an absolute git they are compared to a standard car gearbox and why I specialised in electrics

Our tip went to appointments only during Covid and has never gone back to you being able to just turn up on spec. They do seem quite accommodating if you get there late due to traffic or roadworks etc though and don't generally turn you away as long as they've got your reg no.

There absolutely was a time they were engineered like no other car....

But that time has not been in any year starting with a 20.

There's an update on this...

The Mercedes garage can't look at it until mid November...

Warranty only covers labour up to 37 quid...not an hour 37 quid maximum if you don't use the dealer.

This should just about cover the labour to remove the plastic vanity panels in the engine bay.

Not to worry though they will cover the part...after you've paid and submitted the bill and they've decided if they want to pay and it's covered.

So no car or possible huge bill..that's the premium experience there like.

Yeah, when the vito needed something it used to go to mercedes, then came the eye watering prices just to look at it. And now it goes to non-dealer garages for work.

One of the things I have found, and used to advantage, is the crossovers with VW/MAN
The crossovers are not as straightforward as the ducato/PSA, and there’s a bewildering cross reference that’s involved as some of the crafter/sprinter/LT/MAN are complicated…but, with a bit of delving you can get more reasonable parts for those bits that are shared and some of the bits are, surprisingly, cheaper from merc than VW/MAN…unfortunately the Vito isn’t one of them

Winter wheels back on as colder weather possible from the forecast. Id forgotten I had repainted them so it was a nice suprise. Summer tyres now ending year 5 have about 4.5mm left so another two maybe three years left. WInters still on 7+mm so they will last until age gets them, SO another job washing the alloys and de=stoning the tyres. Its about my limit after that cast iron bath. Im going to need a week to recover from that! Next week the house kicks off, heating and roofing and locksmiths arrive and windows all set to arrive weds. Just hope i can get them indoors.

Flu and Covid jabs this morning, usual (mostly) early pints of Guinness…no adverse effects, but missus only having flu jab this year as she says ‘not feeling as bad as I did after last Covid jab). I’ve absolutely NO IDEA how she’s able to distinguish which jab made her feel bad last year!

I have had the flue one first with no side effects, then a couple of days ago the covid moderna one, my sisters said it affected them , but apart from a slightly sore arm no issues.
I have now been told I need a shingles one.
If I had any money I would buy Pharma shares:(
