Many years ago, before Panasonic Toughbooks arrived, I used to repair Compaq laptops for a telecoms company that gave them to field service engineers.
Got to the point where I could strip one down, replace the screen and reassemble in the back of my Peugeot 405 estate in less time than it took them to go into the office to book out a replacement.
Used to keep a box of spare screens in the car, plus a couple of spare laptops.
Didn't get defeated by many, although there was one which got run over by the van it was supposed to be in.... Saved a few key caps and the battery and binned the rest.
I guess it was familiarity, but I found them easy to work on.
Fast forward 20 years - Took me nearly a whole day to replace the screen on an Acer laptop for my sister a couple of years ago, and swore I would never touch another laptop.
Of course, I just had to replace the battery on my old Dell as I'm too tight to pay someone else to do it.
I like tight! But not as much as I hate laptop cases.

@irc Maybe you can help me, I recently picked up an old Panasonic Tough Book CF-D1N series running Win 10 with the intention of trying MES on it and other diagnostics, but the Touch screen doesn't work, so I have to use a USB mouse and keyboard, only paid £40 so not the end of the World.
My last Windows systems were Win 7 as I prefer Linux, less intrusive, so I haven't looked to deeply into this one.:)

That's what the computer shop does after talking a customer into spending vast amounts of money on the most expensive piece of kit in their shop.
I remember one of my car customers whose husband had just had two severe strokes and was on his last legs, being assured by PC World that the £2000+ computer set up they had just sold them for his young family and children's school work was "future proof", on delivering their car back from a service I then spent several hours setting up and explaining how to use it all. Something the salesman couldn't be bothered with!
Mind you when working for a car dealership we often got customers who had bought a new car asking us how everything worked as they got no sense from the sales staff back in the 1970s.
I recall being asked into the showroom on behalf of a customer and after providing assistance he pulled me to one side and popped a note into my hand , after thanking him and walking away, wondering on what the denomination of the note was, shall I say I was less impressed to discover it was a Psalm, him being of a religious persuasion.:(

Why not just replace the fan in the PSU?
A lot more hassle. Currently, I can continue working with the computer, accepting the occasional noise. Replacing the PSU will take 10 minutes. The current PSU does not look to easily dismantle, so that'd take a few minutes to remove it, then work out how to dismantle it, and remove the fan, if possible. It may be glued in position, or have other tamperproof fixings. Once out, I've then got the issue of trying to identify it, and match it to a replacement, if I can find one, with enough detail to confirm it is correct. Then wait for it to arrive, without a computer, unless I rebuild it to do the whole job twice. More trouble that it is worth.

Once replaced, I may look at it to see if it dismantles, but without too much enthusiasm. I still haev teh PSU from the computer I scrapped in 2015, when it was replaced with this one. Despite claiming to be ATX, it has all the wrong connectors, so won't power motherboard or HDD. Difficult to work with just a DVD drive adn no motherboard. That PSU does not come apart unless welds are broken, so no chance of using just the fan.

I have a nice big angle grinder. I bet that would shift it.
Ok Im a philistine.
And a teesy bit bonkers.

Only a "teesy bit"? Join the club;).
Re the noisy PSU fan, not recommended, but I have blown them out with a high pressure air line and given them a squirt of WD40 which worked.:)

I was wondering about an airline
Blow out the dust, then a few thousand rpm via the fan

Works well on 'hoovers'
(non hydro-electric ones')

Cleaned the fan, small paintbrush and vac cleaner. A bit of play in the bearings, lubricant will be short term. It's done over 8 years, time for it to retire.

It is 7:40pm, New Year's Eve, and some clown down the road is letting off fireworks. Maybe just over 4 hours early?
Traditional. These days people dont know what tradtion even means. So they ruin it for everyone who would like to celebrate in a traditional way. A bit like the singing of Christmas carols.

My immediate neighbours are normally all in bed soon after 9pm. Tonight though, there is a lot of noise, and getting noisier.
This makes me wonder, whatis the point of staying up to see the new year in, if you are too drunk to remember anything in the morning?
Normally, I'd just go to bed, as normal, its just another day. The planet will go around again, regardless of what number we place on the day. Sadly, tried to go to bed, too much noise to sleep.

Why not just replace the fan in the PSU?
New PSU arrived. There's a plug on the motherboard, that on mine is a 4-pin 12v supply. New PSU came with an 8-pin. Motherboard pin diagram, and new PSU diagram concurred that top row was all 12v, bottom all ground. Made to plug in with half of the plug, the other half overhanging doing nothing. Seems to work. Case sharp edges drew a little blood, as expected.

All working, and quiet.

Dismantled old PSU, extracted fan. More work than necessary, but that's how it was made.
With fan specs, and dimensions, did a Google search. Most are higher current, not worth the risk. Only seem to be availble from China, and pics/specs not clear. Spent too much time researching nonsense, so good idea, not for me. Glad I went new PSU, less hassle.

Will the vacuum cleaner help get the dust out of my nose? Or will it pull my tiny brain out? (Don't try this, at home or anywhere else. Just silly thoughts.)

I believe the Egyptians when embalming their kings used a long silver spoon to do that via the nostril as they didn't have the right electrical connector for their vacuum cleaners;).

Car insurance time again quote came in 120 quid more than last year...

Toured the websites...I can save a whole 30 quid by agreeing to telematics or 6 quid on a standard policy...or buy a policy from a company named Geoffrey and save 24 pound.

I think I'll drop the annual mileage (it was higher last year as first full year with one car but we only did a out 10.5k) slightly and renew....given knocking 2k off it will likely bring me down to a similar level to wor Geoff...

We are babysitting our daughters pup. The dog has an issue with guys except for her dog dad and her dog brothers. She will roughhouse all day with Buster but if I walk into the room she stares, barks at me, then runs off. It's kind of like being at work.
She was snoozing so deeply yesterday, that I sat next to her and she didn't stir. She put her head on my leg after a couple minutes, then quickly realized I wasn't grandma, who she adores, and bolted. She will tolerate me if we are taking a walk, but then that only if Buster is there. On this morning's walk, we were about a half mile from the house when her lead came off of her collar. I stopped to hook it back up to her collar and she bolted. Again. And ran the entire way back to the house. She did stand and wait at the door until Buster and I got back to the house, then ran into the house like she was on fire.
Mrs.Cheest and our youngest say they feel bad for me because I am the dog guy in the family, but I am so used to it that I just shrug my shoulders and move on.

Floods. Norfolk.
This area is normally dry, and had only a couple of large puddles in two days ago. Now there ,must be 150,000 gallons of water here some 15 feet deep.
Only the second time in 35 years I have seen this with water in. Normally its just a very big hole.
