What's made you grumpy today?

What's made you grumpy today?

I just stuck aircon compressor clutch into Google, and came back with results. Not specific to Golf of course, but it seems Autodoc list for many models.
I would expect the compressor, and clutch to be generic, so not that many options. Vehicle manufacturers are likely to use an existing unit, rather than have a bespoke unit designed, so hopefully just a case of choosing the right one.
Thanks Bill, I'd like to think that the case and many manufacturers may do this, VW though seem to have about half a dozen or more seemingly different designs for a VW Golf mk6 2.0TDI.

The official model of my car is a

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet 2.0TDI Bluemotion Technology.

and is the late 2015 euro 6 version, so its got very specific parts to safe energy and fuel related to the Bluemotion system.
Things like a coolant pump that can be switched on and off if its not needed, and alternator that can push high currents and voltages when not on the power but switch off completely when the engine is under load. given this I suspect there is some gadgetry in the aircon compressor too.

VW being VW I am sure it is a common part used in several different models. maybe with the pulley being different I'm hoping that if that difference applies to this pump that means I can get the clutch separately.

The truth hurts.;)
Certainly does…I did a very similar thing working in occupational safety and health.
The senior ‘management’ wanted a favourable’ course and assessment for a specific type of grave digging…I won’t go into details, but on examination, I reported back that what was proposed was unworkable…to prove the point I asked them to meet me, I pointed out that they wouldn’t even be able to get the kit in, then dived into hole, fully suited and booted and said, now pass me the shuttering…after being told I was ‘just trying to find fault’…I climbed out, told the senior manager to go screw himself and went home to get changed and took my suit to get dry cleaned, charged it to work and spent the day at home, fielding emails that weren’t exactly apologetic!

Whilst pottering about outside, I discovered two packages beside the front porch. Both Royal Mail Tracked. Checking the reference numbers, both delivered on 1st June, been outside since. At least they were sealed plastic bags.
No card left to advise, and not in an area where I would see it entering or exiting the front door. Hadn't chased the packages, because deliveries are poor recently, with mail only coming once a week, due to staff shortages. One item, was signed for by someone with the same name as me, when I was 45 miles away.

Thanks for doing that. There is quite a list there but the details at the top look OK. I am going to wait and see what my brother finds out from TPS as they are essentially Volkswagen's parts business for the trade by the look of it and getting a genuine part that matches the one specifically fitted from new is going to be my first choice unless the price is prohibitively expensive.

Definitely shows you can get the clutch on it's own.

The Verdict is in.......

£745 +vat for a whole new compressor as they will not sell the clutch separately.

This leaves me two options.

1. @portland_bill's list of clutch assemblies' on autodoc (thanks Bill)
2. find out the part number of the compressor, buy a used one on eBay and then scavenge the clutch from it at least then I have a genuine clutch for a genuine compressor.

I am going to see if I can get the actual part number off the compressor later and then see where I go from there.
The one bonus of going the ebay route is being able to take the compressor apart off the car, so I can see what I'll need to do in the car.
The bonus of the new clutch is the new clutch. I may go with both options. Temporary fix with an Ebay part so I can pinpoint exactly which replacement new clutch I will need.

Access is going to be an arse because of new cars completely enclosing everything under the car.

Jesus wept...I originally read that as 475 for some reason and still thought oof. Vat and labour at a dealership would make that erm somewhat interesting/the price of a week at center parcs in school holidays (the official standard of eyewatering).

I suppose at least you can put the roof down!

My grump for the day..

Went to the office at rush hour (technically actually not as set off at 7am for my 8am start) for first time since we moved offices. Now apparently I live 25 minutes away...arrived bright and early at 8:30..a heady 9 and 1/3rd mph average.

I stopped for lunch on my way to Red Wing, Minnesnowta. Was just checking the tie down on my old bicycle when I saw this.

Where the hell is my saddle? It was on the bicycle when I left home.

Sunuva…

I dropped $130US for a new one. Happy Early Fathers Day to me, I guess.

Thats a nice quality saddle!. I think it was just the bike's way of telling you something..... I dont suppose you will set off without checking all the nuts and bolts again. I have seen similar things happening on a few occasions over the years.

Imagine what the main dealer would charge to fix it !

So couldn’t get new parts, though the bits I need are on the autodoc website there is a small issue

So I have taken a gamble on an eBay compressor, and hope to canabalise it for the bits I need.

Really didn’t fancy doing this myself and was just going to throw it at a garage and throw some money with it, but can’t justify over £1k for something so minor. Worst case I still have a replacement pump I can fit.

Here's some more, sadly a bit of choice to wade through.

These guys only seem to list teh compressor, but the pics and specs might help understand the choices, and help choose the right clutch. https://www.partsinmotion.co.uk/car...n/golf/golf-vi-convertible-517/volks-golf-229

I'd be considering getting the broken part made rather than pay that.

Ebay, second hand one and swap the bits you need. Then stick the broken on one ebay, someone will want a compressor and might have the clutch part.

I am still laying down in shock, owing to two ex wives and five children none of the three vehicles I currently have taxed and Moted on the road even cost the £745 price of the compressor.;)
Citroen wanted to charge me £430+vat for a wiper motor, Makes the compressor seem reasonable.

When we had our Audi A4, the stealership offered to replace the wiper blades for $85US. Price wise, not the same, but I could get the blades at the local farm store $10US each.

A/C clutches are a crapshoot depending on the make of the compressor. We inadvertently installed several compressors with 12 volt clutches on machines with 24 volt systems. Our bad. If we’d installed the units that cost us ten bucks more, we could have gotten 24v clutches for replacement. I think we field replaced two compressors. The third one was in the middle of nowhere Montana and hadn’t fried yet, so I installed a 24 volt to 12 volt/30 amp converter between the clutch and the clutch relay. We ended up doing that to the other five machines. Added benefit was the customer now had a 12volt source for their radios.

In the vein of "What's made you grumpy today?" Does this qualify?
Just had a lorry driver drop of a 1 Tonne pallet of coal onto my Doblo!
Over the years I have had several similar deliveries with no problems, they reverse up the cul de sac, stop about 20 yards/metres away decant the pallet and pallet trucks off tail lift and roll down to the drive , where I can move with my pallet trucks to where I want it.
This time drove up , then decided to angle up to my drive block road and parked with lorry and tail lift leaning, pallet jammed halfway on lorry half on tail lift, then proceeded top drop tail lift in the hope the 1 tonne pallet would slide onto tail lift better, it didn't the load burst open and fell off tail lift.
The damage is just to o/s/f/ wing once bags moved, but will have to see what courier has to say!
