What's made you grumpy today?

I've just brought our younger cat into the lounge and put her in her basket, as she gets really freaked by fireworks. Didn't want to do it, as she looked happy on her chair by the back door, but I'd prefer her to be where she can see us not panicking when the inevitable happens.

Climate change. And the fact that this, and plastics etc., are being forced upon us at every opportunity.

Dame Edna Christmas Special - they wheeled out a Countryfile presenter to rant about single use plastic.

Jools Holland - someone was stuck in the audience to mention climate change.

Now, climate change may be a thing. But it's debatable as to how much of a man-made thing it is and how much it's just the natural cycle of the planet.

However, we are being told things are down to climate change when they're no such thing - for example, the wild fires in Australia have been on a steep decline over recent years, this latest epidemic may be a huge natural disaster, but it's not a climate change issue.

There will be a massive backlash against this as people just get sick of being told everything they do / buy / eat etc., is causing climate change.

With you on that.. we had a mediterranean climate 1000 years ago.

Australia supposedly experiencing hottest ever temperature..
Shame 'the Mysterons' made off with the pre 1700 recorded data..

Apparently the aussie volunteers are now backburning..
Clearing the scrub in isolation.. to generate a 'fire break'

I knew about these techniques
circa 1978..

Theyve had drought conditions
for 5 years+..

Seem a little late in the day..
a bit disorganised to me.

Couldn't agree more. Since Greta has been bunking off school the question of how we look at our planet has been everywhere. We do need to look after this planet and all of its inhabitants but every time I discuss it with friends and family and find myself drawn to the same conclusion......We're doomed. And I'm not trying to be flippant when I say that it's just I can't see a way that we humans can change anything because as humans we are naturally selfish. I recycle and reuse things when I can. I hate waste. I do my very best but I love cars. They are and always will be my passion. I have three ATM and that's not including the wife's car. This by any means is over the top. I'll never be driving all three at once so what's the point? They all need oil and fuel and it all adds to climate change even if it is on a small scale but it's what I love and don't want to give it up.

And I'm not alone. Lots of people do their bit recycling their rubbish, walking to work and point it all out with smug glee on social media how good they are at it but the temptation to jump on a plane and sun themselfs up on a beach in Mexico every year always gets the better of them. Why? Because it suits them. "Excuse me love, instead of having your hen doo in Ibiza for 2 weeks why not go to Skegness for 2 days instead? You'll be saving on fuel and doing your bit to save the planet!" I think I know what the answer would be. It's not their fault of course they're just human. We all do our bit to save the planet but we all contribute to polluting it too just by doing our day to day chores.

So what to do? To me the only real way to "reverse" climate change is to literally stop using fossil fuels and live the way we did 300 years ago. No cars, no planes, no giant container ships cursing the seas, no factories, no electricity...... This is unrealistic and won't happen of course as we have built a whole infrastructure around these things and now we have become reliant on them plus the chaos that just stopping would cause doesn't bear thinking about. I think our intelligence will eventually be our downfall. ...... Happy new year by the way!

The answer to climate change?

Stop having kids.

Seriously - the one most damaging thing any human can do to the planet is to have a kid. And if, as a couple, you have more than 2 kids, you are the ones responsible for killing our planet.

The solution is to shrink world population to more manageable levels.

There's some scary statistic that most of us will see a something like three fold increase in world population during our lifetimes. I've already seen a doubling in world population and I've still got at least a third, maybe as much as half my life to live!

The issue with this as a strategy is that globally all the young people live elsewhere.

Tbf I don't want another child but demographic wise you need people of working age to pay tax and into pension schemes otherwise you end up with the pensions black holes and a shortage of workers.

You can keep pushing the retirement age back but you aren't going to have 75 year old policemen and builders, soldiers e.t.c.

So effectively yes you can choose not to have a child but birth rates in this hemisphere are historically low already so unfortunately it comes back to lifestyle choices.

I don't necessarily agree with the way it's gone about, especially the rush to electrify...lets spend huge amount of fossil fuels and other resources such as lithium building new infrastructure and vehicles while throwing away a lot of other things that could have continued under other circumstances.

Once everyone is in their electric car...well flying is forecast to increase by about 50% in the next 50 years, entirely cancelling out the effort in terms of green house gas reduction.

If I flew to New York once a year..that's doubling my transport emissions compared to 8k miles in a 40mpg petrol car.

Well yes, we live in a massive Ponzi scheme and it's going to be very hard to break out of it.

Birth rates are low, but survival rates are high and life expectancy is being extended every decade.

We can't solve all our issues by pushing more into the bottom to pay for the top.

I suppose by pushing the climate agenda and trying to drive us back to the dark ages, we'll naturally see decreasing life expectancy and increasing infant mortality anyway...

I tried the new 'Vegan Burger' at KFC, despite not being a vegan / vegetarian.. I was initially impressed by how 'like' chicken it was, a bit like a KFC fillet burger but a tad dry... Seemed real enough at the time.

But unlike real chicken, it left a weird, artificial aftertaste that reminds you it's not.

Now, I'm grumpy I drove into town, waited in that line and missed out on some real chicken...

You know what they say:

So, Extinction Rebellion have been out today, vandalising our sites.

Using a can of aerosol paint.

Where, exactly, do they think the propellants and, most likely, the pigments, came from in that paint? And those trainers they're wearing. They look distinctly like they're made from synthetic materials, especially the expanded PU foam in the sole.

I don't reckon they walked there, either.

This planet has been through several 'ice ages'. To get to a second one, the planet must have warmed up to get out of the first. I doubt those early cycles of heating/cooling were caused by humans driving around, or failing to recycle. We may be adding a bit, but we're not causing it.

A long time ago, during history lessons at school, the teacher showed us an excerpt from a (I think Captain Cook's) ship's log, as they were approaching either Los Angeles or San Francisco harbour. It detailed how the harbour was shrouded in a thick yellow fog. I doubt this was caused by the citizens drving their Cadillacs too much around the city.

With my daughter her husband and their two kids as well as Mrs J's sister staying with us over Christmas into the new year, partly to escape the utter chaos which is our house, we have been out and about a lot - much more than usual - visiting my two boys and their families who live to the south of the city. A lot of this has involved journeys in the car and it's served to remind me of two things I find very annoying about modern motoring.

First off is the number of people "fiddling" (I would guess texting) on their mobile phones whilst waiting at traffic lights. My old driving instructor, Mr Scott, was very keen on you being constantly aware of what was going on outside the car. He would offset mirrors very slightly so he could see you moving your head when checking them and would often ask, with a hand over the mirror, "What's behind right now"? He taught me to be aware, all the time, of exactly what might be going on behind and this has stayed with me to this day. Consequently I frequently glance in my mirrors all the time I'm driving and it depresses me deeply how often the person behind is texting and fails to move off when I do because they are looking down. Even more alarming are the types who creep up slowly, slipping the clutch (or maybe they have automatics?) behind you whilst looking down texting. AAAARGH! The only thing that gives me a little comfort is that they will be wearing their clutches and if they have a modern Dual Clutch type auto - DSG? - then they will soon be needing an ultra expensive clutch pack renewal! (Note to those who don't know - don't "creep" in a dual clutch auto unless you have very deep pockets)

The other thing is people who fail to indicate or indicate wrongly on roundabouts. If I go out to see my boy who lives in Midlothian there are 12 roundabouts to negotiate, 8 if I'm visiting my older boy, so lots of practice on roundabouts. I think the most annoying are the people, and there are many, who indicate right on entering the roundabout and neither cancel or indicate left when leaving. This leaves you thinking they are actually going on round as their indicator is blinking. So you stop only to have them depart at the "off" before where you are waiting leaving you stationary and looking like an idiot! People who don't indicate at all is no longer a guarantee that they are going straight on I find they are often just as likely to be trying to "T" bone you as they continue merrily on round the roundabout! People who "straight line" roundabouts are also dangerous and annoying but, of late, I haven't come across so many of them (except Mrs J's sister who does it all the time and refuses to accept criticism. I keep my head down and mouth shut now! She gets away with it as she drives a Land Rover - and, being outnumbered by the two of them, I'm just to keen on a quiet life. Maybe a bit of a coward too?)

I hate to say it, but this is schadenfreude in action - exactly as most Liberal and Labour voters predicted.

This is just the start. All those muppets in deprived areas voting both for Brexit and the Tories are going to get exactly what they deserve.

30 years of motorcycling makes you very aware.. (often subconsciously..) of the eejits around you..

I've always had a bike of some sort "hanging around" - not always suitable for road use. When younger I fancied myself as a bit of a trials rider - I was actually totally useless at the competitive bit but it taught me an awful lot about bike control and road surfaces, as anyone who has ridden on "knobblys", especially on tarmac, will tell you. Although I now don't have a current bike, having just sold my NSU before Christmas, I still tend to watch out for manhole covers, white lines, shiny looking surfaces, rainbow colours on the road, etc, etc and that's before I factor in the "eejits". I don't attempt to challenge or "beat" an eejit and haven't for many years. I'd much rather they went off and had an accident with someone else. Loss of face doesn't worry me at all.

It never ceases to astonish me how educational this forum is. I read, with great interest, the political views that have been recently expressed by several people on here regarding Brexit and the effects it's going to have on us. I chose not to comment - although I find it hard at times and am very tempted right now but what I really like is the cars and being able to chat with you lads (and lasses) without "baggage" sullying our exchanges - Thanks for the education Schumi, schadenfreude - and epicaricacy, as I find it's English counterpart is called - are two words which, in my whole 73 years on this planet, I've never before come across. How very interesting!
Kindest regards to all
Jock
