General Vat increase

General Vat increase

Just goes to show the difference between a car dealer and a motorcycle dealer, for me it's totally blown the car buying experience, i've never bought a new car before and i'm now starting to realise why.
Are all bike dealers participating in this money for free initiative? I might pop in tonight and pick up my £200 for free from the local Honda place.

If the same order had taken place in our shop and it was of no fault of the customers of course we would pay it. That's why people come back year after year and buy more bikes. Rule number 1 keep your customers happy, somehow i doubt 2.5% off would ruin the dealer.

I don't think that's the point though, everyone knew VAT was going to go back up. I ordered back in May so I knew there was little or no chance I'd have to pay 17.5% VAT but if you ordered anytime from late August onwards you should have realised that you might need to pay extra to cover the VAT. If you or other people didn't realise then it's your own silly fault tbh.

I've only lived here for 3 and a half years after coming over from Australia and I was well aware of VAT and the fact that it was going to rise next year after going down earlier this year.

I also knew the vat was going back up and when, however what i didn't know is how the fiat car factory works. so i have to ask how it works by someone who knows. i was told the car would take 12 weeks, had i been told it could take 20 weeks and therefore not arrive until 2010 i could've made an enformed choice on the matter.

So what's the issue? I bet you wouldn't have complained had you taken delivery of your car when VAT went down. Sucks to be you but them's the brakes. Talk to the dealer about paying the VAT early, nothing much else you can do.

when this is sorted, ask about showroom tax.
yes starts april 2010. aprox £500 per car.

my 2 peneth is ask dealer if he can and will do it.

I think we're back where we started, again i say charity please.

Edited for accuracy.

As has been said many times, by all means ask if you can pay the VAT before it goes up. But it's not the dealers fault that your order is taking so long.

No not guaranteed delivery. but why would i think 12 weeks is 20 weeks? should i have asked what happens if the boat sinks too?

306Maxi, why if your told it would be 12 weeks should you expect it to then be 20 weeks. You say it is not the dealers fault, but it is there fault they quoted 12 weeks. An acceptable margin would be maybe an extra 2-3 weeks maximum. Before you say it is not their fault, it is Fiats, it makes no difference they make the contract and sell the product. They can't deliver so they should pay in my opinion if at the time of ordering you were comfortably within the delivery time quoted. Why should the customer pay when they have agreed the purchase using the information provided. If you say 20 weeks should be expected, where do you draw the line, is 30 weeks, 40 weeks or more acceptable, I don't think so.

If you went for a service and they said it would be ready the same day quoted you around £100 and when you went to collect it you had to pay £166.00 and it took 3 days, you would not be happy. It's the same principle. You make you decision based on the informaiton provided and take into account a bit of extra time.

It's not charity for a company to pay for it's own perfomance limitations. It's actually the other way round, making the customer pay for your limitations. They make profit so they can take it on the chin.

I've just read about this on the BBC website and it is really aimed at the most polluting cars. If the info is right, it will not apply to the 1.2 500, and I think the 1.4 may also escape the charge. In fact it looks like the 1.2 will no longer even have to pay the £35 annual road tax. Yes you are stuffed if you want a monster 4x4, but I'm totally OK with that.

Your example is not comparable at all. The price on the service was agreed @ £100 so it should be £100 and not more and should take 1 day unless there are complications. The car is a completely different matter, the dealer is in effect still getting the same price for the car, it is the government who are getting more off you. The dealer didn't raise the cost of the car, the govt did and everyone knew it was going to happen so.....

How does the fact that everyone new about the VAT increase mean anything?

If he was told he would get a car in 12 weeks, which is BEFORE the increase - does it make any difference that he knows there will be a raise later on, it shouldn't affect him so why would he care?

An 8 week jump is a lot....

Again, because the fiat dealer didn't supply the fiat car in the time quoted, You would think in the interest of keeping that customer buying fiat, they would swallow it.
