According to a friend of ours who is a psychiatric nurse, over a third of her patients in the secure unit where she works are drug induced psychotics and another third are alcohol induced psychotics.

Abuse of some drugs are strongly linked to the cause of mental health problems. Many recreational drugs are psycho-stimulants that disrupt the chemical balance of the brain (LSD, Cannabis, Ecstacy, Amphetamines etc.) Long term abuse can cause psychiatric problems. Alcohol can also exacerbate minor psychiatric problems extensively though it works as a barbituate rather than a psychostimulant and can cause violent mood swings. The physical addiction and withdrawal to alcohol can cause all manner of psychiatric problems.

Get rid of Religion and you'll solve half the worlds problems. Get rid of recreational drugs and alcohol abuse and you'll solve the other half
