The Bismarck - warning: not a Fiat

Introduction

Here we go (just for Liam), the Bismarck mk II, a fine piece of German engineering. BMW 330d sport 2004 (manual gearbox), lots of horses, lots of torque (and to think I used to be scared of hills, now they're scared of me ;)), fab handling for a big car (far stiffer than the Brava), very comfortable and elegant, lots of gizmos and gadgets :D It scares me a bit, especially the fact it's so smooth and relaxed, especially at high speeds. And I'm not sure I love it, though it's certainly nice! As for mods, well most of it's done but I would like to upgrade the headlamps, a remap and possibly a retrim but that's it.

The day I went to look at it (missing centre cap replaced)

What passes for a spoiler on a BMW

Back end - please note parking sensors which are handy since I can't see where the car ends

Beeeeeeeeeeeg wheels

Interior - wanted all Alcantara as I don't much like leather and finding a black leather interior (which was second choice) is about as hard again, so had to settle for half Alcantara so there's a retrim in the offing!

Got it remapped this morning at E-maps in Walsall, who do a lot of German cars (y) Before and after review for Liam:
before - fast :)
after - fasterer :D

As in other thread, it's now pulling about 245bhp and 500+nm torque and there's a noticeable difference, especially in the economy department and the engine is much smoother :D. Guy after me had a 335d which should be going towards 350bhp (stronger clutch and drivetrain so can push it higher)

be carefull, some of these remap companies are mapping to the max and not safe limit, engines going bang

That's why I went with Simon - he has a guy in Germany custom-writes his maps and German cars are his speciality :) Other companies promise so much more but that's why I didn't go to them, too many stories of clutch dying or drivetrain going snap (engine itself can take so much more than the parts)!

oooo cant wait till you get here, I feel the need for a girlie 'timewarp' moment ;) :p

Hope your not scratching the bonnet there!!!

Yeah you cna get more ponies but at the expense of clutch and premature turbo failure, sure many could have got you 260+ but it's not needed or wanted.

Liam

I was advised to consider a lower map again due to mileage of car (90k, barely run in then) but tried it and it just wasn't up to the mark so back we went and this one (their standard) should still be well within tolerances (you're right, I've seen 260bhp+ advertised) and if it's well serviced, turbo should be OK. Might just need clutch done sooner is all!

And if it all goes to pot, I have no-one but myself to blame :(

I'd avoid full throttle at peak torque. (around 2k rpm?) That should avoid most of the wear on the clutch.

The 330d has a REALLY wide power band - maximum power and torque extends from 2000-4000 revs so that's kinda hard. All I can do is take it steady while it's cool, it has a torque limiter in first to help the clutch and I'll try not to rev/ hold it as much...........but thanks for thinking of me!

it has a torque limiter

sweet piece of kit :D

Very nice buy, not usually a fan of bm's, but thats mostly based on the fact that most ppl end up with the bottom of the run 31.8 etc.

but the 3.0d (the newer one like yours) is a stonking engine in the 5series, and in the 3series, well, 200kg's lighter =

yes they feel very stable and will handle so much better than the brava, yeah you loose some sensation of speed, but you'll like that when you have to drive to guildford/fnnnnarborough on a regular basis (like 4,000rpm+ for 7hours for me, bloody sucks) or other such long trips.

is that the garage on the side of the 595 near that dodgy junction, with the long straighton either side? there *was* a garage that sold cars their before that outfit and they were closed down by the fsa or somesuch because they weren't doing their finance deals (with black horse most likelY) properly.

Glad you likie :D

No, I had to travel to Sheffield (thanks Sammi ) to buy it, namely because I was being fussy because: I wanted a facelift (faster, nicer rear lights and bodykit), I wanted a manual, I wanted a Sport, I wanted either black leather or Alcantara, I wanted one that had done less than 100k, I wanted to buy from a dealer for extra protection and I was on a budget. Which meant there were 4-5 cars for sale nationwide that met my criteria at any one time and I kept losing out to another buyer :(

Thought i recognised the garage... :chin:

good to know its not just us who WILL trawl the country looking for the 'right' car. esp when the general populs in this country are usually content with the lowest model in the range (which ****'s me off as theres never any decent cars to buy used  ).

yes the facelift ones do look extra good, only very subtle differences, but to those in the know, its lush

saw a very very late e36 coupe facelift yesterday, (was on a V plate?) and was prob one of the first 3series i've seen in the flesh that I actually liked.
