Technical Speedo/mileage problem

Our Multipla's speedo stopped working a few weeks ago and after a new sender was OK again for about a month but stopped again. The dealer did some checking and said it needed a new speedo pod which has been fitted and works but he can't work out how to get the correct mileage set on it. Any ideas? He's booked it on for a diagnostic test on the ECU but we're getting concerned about things.

The garage has now said they have got the mileage sorted but the speedo is working intermittantly. Having replaced the speedo and sender, they are now suggesting we need to get a new gearbox?!?! Surely this can't be right?
