Don't use Teflon tape on a sump plug, as you can easily strip the threads.
A tapered plug will seal by itself, using the correct torque.

In 53 years of using PTFE tape on some tapered sump/gearbox plugs I've never stripped or had any thread wear on steel sump threads or alloy gearbox threads.

Interesting you say this Peter as I've never heard of this before. Do you have any examples or references?

I am also not sure how a soft Teflon tape is going to cause threads to strip,

But then again I have never used tape on a sump plug.

These tapes are designed specifically for this purpose and are mainly used in plumbing applications where the metals are softer and the pressures a lot higher, they are cranked up to much higher torque than a sump plug.

The lump hammer appeals to me for its duel use, smashing up concrete AND Puntos lol.

I'm going to get a dead blow hammer of some description, perhaps a copper one or other similar material, because it'll be worth having long term.

It'd be interesting to see your hammers.

Thats a challenge I will accept if the forum allows all the required photos.....
I did recently give my 28lb sledge to a neighbour who is quite a bit younger than me. I could lift it, but if I swung it and missed I would have ended up in Siberia!

All things are possible but PTFE stripping threads, when its designed to seal and lubricate seems difficult to grasp. Ive been using it also for around the same time and on most of the 95 motors Ive had. Might not seal perfectly on odd occssions but the bungs have always come out for me too. I also use the gas rated stuff and thats been fine too. The wrong type of hermetite, and yes I have has issues but no actual stripped threads. Just pain and suffering and rounded nuts
