Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

Ok so we have some new rubber plus some other goodies :D

running 165/70/r13. with the spare being a 135/80/r13.. i also had Talon's spare wheel tyre changed as that was really perished.

all 6 tyres were balanced even the spares! all tyres cost £48 to do.. the bus hand rails cost me £5.. the other bits were thrown in free.

being as i cant afford to insure, i just keep playing around with the looks...

dont mind my brother in the background there working the scrap yard find gas BBQ :D

insurance is going to be a killer i think. the change from 999cc to 1242cc puts the car at around £800 to insure. it does not help that we live in the only house on the street that was built after all of the other houses. meaning we have an "A" at the end of our house number. that puts a huge amount on the insurance price.. when we do online quotes they always default to next door. so we have to enter the address manually. however if i was to live next door my car insurance would be about £250 cheaper!

insurance is always the killer. i cant believe you have to pay it every year at such a high amount.

Don't get the final quotes online. Their systems are very basic and can't ask detailed questions about addresses and modifications so they default to adding £££ "just in case" it's a worst case scenario.

Get a basic quote to work from online, then get on the phone to some specialist insurers and the prices should come down by a large amount.

Try Admiral, they're far from an excellent insurance company but when I inquired what they'd add to my insurance if I did an engine swap they quoted me £60 extra on the £520 that I pay now, I was quite surprised! Now if only I can afford to do the actual engine swap

*shakes fist

I was going to put hazard tape on Blackie - now it will look like I copied Fallout! :(

Mind you I was going to *borrow it from work so probably saved myself a load of trouble!

Thanks DM :)

Get your GP to prescribe Loratadine tablet and a nasal spray for the hayfever!

would look good on a black car... :D

so a bit of info with the exhaust.

as most of you know i plan to do a no silences strait pipe twin side exit (both sides) exhaust, but i wish to keep the original exhaust which will be the default exhaust for all time driving.

switching between exhausts will be done by use of some kind of valve.
just so happens that Suzuki sports bikes use such a valve to control back pressure.

this valve passes like hell when closed but i believe it is because it does not close all the way, maybe due to safety if it was to fail closed on the bike.
looks like it is easy moddable to be made to close tighter and make a better seal.

its default spring loaded position is wide open but i plan on changing that so the pring closes it shut

you can just see the gap around it:

looks like i have some modding to do!

fallout had a little tangle with.. err.. well its better if i show you.

also on another note,
the dash surround is in and the radio now has speakers in the door pockets!
i have spare door pockets so i was not fussed about cutting holes into these. besides one was cracked.

no i dont really follow any car mods/styling or read magazines.. all the work i have done so far has come from my own mind.. ive not copied anyone.

well i have copied something from allen fletcher but i wont be able to sort that out until i can find where the hell i put that huge tow bar that came off this car when i got it..

anyway. here is the latest pictures... :D

Oh god I didn't mean you'd copied!

Rather if there were any ideas on the S15 build you would want to copy! :D

I'd love to get a car to do this or get a rat look kinda build going.
