Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

keep watching guys.. the jet wash will be coming out later today!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

ok guys, you have not been seeing much..

here you all go some pictures..:

so as you can see, the tank is on, with all the fuel pipes connected.. its been painted (top has been tetrosealed, bottom will be done when i have pit accesses..)

not sure why but the back box now hits the leaf spring. bit of a pain, but not the end of the world.

i am not sure if you are meant to, but i have put copper slip in all the chafing points on the leaf springs. i was considering making nylon plates that each leaf could rub against.

the door has been (badly) fixed up.. still some light welding work to do on it.. but this is now all cosmetic welding hence me not using a gas bottle in the welder. this flux cored welding wire is.. hmm.. easy.. but the weld is not very nice. perfect for the look i want.

fuel tank has fuel in it too so i know the float level/low fuel light works :D

ordered a 12v coil type pump from off ebay so i will be happy to fit that when the time comes. where i am going to fit it is another thing. i was thinking it could be put on a bracket that bolts to the 2 bolts that holds the wiper arm in.. that way it is up out of the way of water and road salt. i also have an ignition live up there from the old coil system so i wont even have to do any wiring!

coolant system seems to be holding its water well.

what to do next... hmmm..

right guys,

so its looking like this at the moment:

the rubber floor is down but as you can see i have taken the dash out.

that is because i am going to be building a custom dash for the fallout panda.

not much of a plan but this is what i am doing:

basically it is going to be the same size as the dash pod, but it will run the full width of the car. i am going to keep some of the original things but most of the dash will be all custom indicator lights and dials.

i will be on the lookout for old gauges, from temperature to oil pressure voltage and amps.
it will look most awesome. :D

Good news guys!

We now have a running, working engine that starts first turn of the key! no choke, no waiting for the fuel pump to lift fuel from the tank and fill a float bowl!

it took some doing but it is now fully working.

here is the video of it!!!!!11

and i will also leave this here for anyone who wishes to fit this engine to a panda:

the 8F ECU wiring colours for the P75 1.2 MPI engine:

a big thick RED wire, is a constant live from the battery.
ORANGE wire, its an ignition live.
BROWN with WHITE stripe is the fuel pump
BLUE wire, it is for the REV counter
LIGHT GREY with GREEN stripe goes to the CODE box (ECU pin 7)(wire colours match on ECU and CODE box connector!)
BLUE with GREEN stripe goes to the injector/engine management light (ECU pin 6)
LIGHT GREY with YELLOW stripe goes to the oil light
LIGHT GREY with BLACK stripe goes to the battery/Alternator light
LIGHT GREY only wire goes to the temperature gauge

I hope this helps some one in the future!

i also have found out that if you give the CODE light a permanent live, with the engine and ignition OFF, it flashes like an alarm "armed" light. looks cool, but i would swap the bulb out for an LED. as it is a bit more power saving and the constant on/off on a filament/incandescent bulb causes them to blow faster whereas it does not effect an LED.

Well done john!

Some great info there which will no doubt come in useful to many people for years to come :)

not been doing that much to be fair.

i made some window grills for the rear windows and "modded" an old set of column switches to "look the part"..

now i dont really agree with destroying things but one of the stalks was cracked when i got it from the scrap yard.
i guess i just kinda finished it off. still i fixed it how it would be fixed in a post apocalyptic survival situation, and the are still nice and strong too!
well at least i still have the originals should i have to change them back over.

not sure on MOT with it though.. do they have to be labelled?

I think they will come under the discretion of the tester (so given the theme of the car, will be fine, providing you have a friendly-ish mot place).

Even if they have to be labeled (and i can't find anything that says they must...and most cars have the labeling worn off over time anyway), just write on them "lights", "wipers" and "indicators" with a marker and lacquer over for that extra style :D

There's nothing saying they have to be labelled. Controls have to be functionally complete, not cracked fractured or excessively corroded, not obstructed or impeded in their travel, in the right place & secure.

I do think you'll want a proper Mot tester who will take a sensible view on everything John. For example they are not going to pass anything with jagged edges on the bodywork, but you don't want someone trying to find a reason to fail the indicator stalk if it works! (y)

Ala my cinq, which got failed because the ecu diagnostic plug, could (if you unclipped it from the harness) just....just touch the air filter.

Some garages will find a reason to fail ANY car.

i have fit the column switches, and also fixed all of the wiper washer motors and jets today.

also added an extra earthing strap from engine to bodywork. can never over do earths!

hmm.. does anyone know... the engine bay sound proofing, did any mk2 pandas have plastic engine bay sound proofing? the materiel stuff i dont like much.. but the plastic stuff like what the marbella has is fantastic and looks so much more neat!

i have put a wanted ad up for some as i dont have any :/
i'd prefer the plastic stuff.. but will make do with the material stuff.
