Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

A bit of a mixed reply here, hope that's ok.
On the subject of credit - definitely apply for a credit card and assuming you get it, use it but manage it perfectly - i.e pay in full each month, on time.
Also you can use a free credit check service that will give you a read out of markers against your address and other addresses linked to your address. E/G I did that recently and found that because my son once had a mobile phone delivered to his work address (he left there years ago) that business address still has a link to our home address. Now what effect that is having is probably negligible as it is a profitable concern, but what if it wasn't? I think the service I used was called "Noddle" or something like that.
On the subject of insurance. My daughter insured the Punto 1 month ago, but then she decided she couldn't rely on Punto anymore so bought a brand new car. She had an on-line quote for £650 thereabouts for the new car premium, which was about the same as the Punto had been (although fully comp for new car, and 3rd party for Punto).
So, because she had to transfer the policy to the new car, she rang the insurer, expecting it to be a straightforward swap with a bit of adjustment here or there.
Nope. Because she was doing it on the phone (which their website said to do as she wanted the changes to take effect within 3 days) it was a whole new quote : £960!
So she asked how was it possible for the same company to quote 45% more on the phone. Cut a very very long phone call short and somebody in "sales" agreed to match the on line quote, but then wanted to charge £12.50 because it was on the phone. She told them they could whistle for that, and they dropped that from the script.
The point of that was that the world of motor insurance seems to be a very strange one with computer programs driving the whole process, so very small details and slightly different cars or mods, or even the method of booking can have massively different effects.

If you are stuck there is a very good broker in Chesterfield called Spire Insurance 01246 551457 right next to the train station.
Ask for Paul he is very helpful

Let's hear a cheer for old fashioned brokers!
In the above-mentioned epic conversation we had to spell out the name of the car (Hyundai) as the girl on the phone didn't know how.

I had a small accident last year driving to work in a car insured by me online in the wifes name.

Occupation Housewife
Used for social domestic. Yes
Commuting to Work. No Logic Housewife.
Me driving to work in her car = NO INSURANCE

Since that incident which happily they paid out on after I had paid £12 to alter it to add Commuting I gave up online save you loads policies Compare the meerkat etc and use a friendly broker.

May cost £30 or so more but we are insured.

Did by chance however log multiple requests for quote online before getting incensed that 3 days later the online identical quote went up £50.
Rang them direct and told them to get stuffed and got the original price over the phone.
MORAL>
It is likely that they see any business as being better than no business.
So haggle.

Let's not.

Having an absolute nightmare with them myself.

None of them will quote me online, none of them will ring me, none of them will answer their phones any time i try.

Good news though, after trying 12 companies and brokers, i got 1, yes, 1 reply by email....

To phone them.

Repeat them not answering, not ringing me back when i request a call back etc etc etc.:bang:

Sorry, sore point for me right now :p

its going to be nice having 2x 55watt bulbs over the standard single 55w? bulb :D

Won't be legal to use like that on the road to the best of my knowledge, you need to read up on lighting regs, will be covered under max bulb wattage vs light output. You'll effectively have 220 watts of light which isn't permitted from memory.

Yep, ECE Reg 48.
Not to mention Reg26 for External Projection.

I've just lost the plot here- what is the point of carry on with more and much severe modification ? That will not make insurance company happy as you can dazzle oncoming vehicles etc.

i am not sure what original bulbs the capri mk3 uses.. i just assumed that it would be 55w 12v H1 bulbs.

unless the low beam headlamp completely turns off when you put the high beam on.

its something i will have to look up.

i cant see how the head lamps can dazzle on coming vehicles.. unless ALL mk3 ford capri's dazzle on coming drivers... :/

I kinda agree.

I love the whole creative aspect of it and the influences and i think it looks great, but i kinda think it's just going a bit too far to be a usable road car, it's kinda heading more towards of a big model/art piece.

Insurers will have a hissy fit with both the amount and type of things changes, and that's if it can even be mot'd.... (never be surprised what a car will be failed on at the testers discretion)

The headlamps are integral to the design of the car, from the height of the vehicle to the distance they are apart.

If the adjustment is in them to compensate, then yes, it is doable though.

ahh i should be fine then. if i wanted these headlamps can be adjusted in many directions getting them to point in the right direction will not be an issue.

i already checked this ;)

if top gear got that stretched limo cut and shut panda MOTed and insured this thing can be.
and lets not forget. that car actually broke its back just supporting its own weight.

You can insure anything if you have enough money.... sadly not many of us have the same amount to insure vehicles as the top gear production budget has in it ;)

insuring fallout should not be an issue now i have found a few companies willing to insure it. i am not insuring it however as Talon still has about 7 months of tax and test. it would not be economical for me to insure and tax 2 cars at the same time.

the only thing that causes issues with insurance on fallout is the fact it has the 1.2 engine. if the engine was "standard" i may by now be driving around in it.
i plan to only keep fallout for a year (or less if some one gives me a good offer) as i have another car lined up for repair work.

given on fallouts results, i may decide to give talon an engine upgrade or not. it depends if the added horse power it is worth the extra on the insurance costs.. fallout will be this experiment.

Hi John,

Yep the inner lights just act as spot lights while the outers work the same as any other headlights.
I remember back in the day some Capri owners (other twin headlamp cars are available) used to wire them up so that the dipped beam filament stayed on along with main beam to give more light output on main beam. Of course this can be done with any headlamp on any car but I'm not sure what current regs say about it.
Liking the wonky eyed look though!

Don't think the wattage will give any issues given the number of lights you regularly see festooned across the front of Minis but if I remember right the lights do have to be symmetrical, that's the guidance on fitting driving lamps anyway. So a pair of Capri lights should be fine, but one could be difficult to MOT.
