Powerline Network Performance Issues

Powerline Network Performance Issues

I have had a thought:

I could plug two powerline adapters into the same double socket, connect up two computers, one to each adapter, and try a file transfer that way. There should only be a few centimeters of copper cable involved in the powerline side so I should theoretically see an improvement in speed.

If I do, I can conclude that the restriction is caused by something to do with my wiring I think.

Too late to be faffing about now but I'll try this tomorrow.

OK. Today I got fed up with it completely. Transfer speeds of under 300KBytes! Plus, most of the music I've shoved across is corrupted. So I've got loads of old network cable lying around and a 10 port 10/100 switch from when I used to be really into LAN gaming. It's a bit messy but it's MUCH better. Not enough ports on the router to put a cable straight to the HTPC so I plugged the 10/100 switch into the router and now that is connected direct to the HTPC and also the powerline adapter so The Boy still has his internet upstairs. Managed to tuck the 25 meter cable I used into a few nooks and crannies so it's not too obtrusive.

No money spent and now I get transfers around 15MBytes/second. Win!

I'd love to have a proper network set up in the house but it's not going to happen in the current house. This will do for now.

Gigabit LAN in the next house though for sure.

Thanks again guys. Off to enjoy a film now.
