Hi there. I have similar problem. After engine starts I barely touch a steering wheel and the red light comes on. After lots of reading on forums I assumed the steering angle sensor is broken. So I replaced it with the new one but problem persists. Does it need to recalibrate or something else ? Thanks for help

Yes I had that 2 years ago and was at its worst when starting from cold, I got the torque sensor error and ended up buying a new complete column.

But if not already test the battery and alternator to start with.

Right, I've bought the full version of MES now and have managed to check the battery voltages while running.
Brand new battery...12.6v standing
Idle..... 13.6
At 3000rpm .....14.01v

Still get the fault code c1005.

Now it would seem to me that the alternator is struggling to keep up.
Question is do I buy an alternator(£?) or a streering column (£85)

While a little low those values seem perfectly fine I'd that the battery
If they are the power steering ECU voltages they are very good

It could be worth cleaning the connections between the alternator and the battery and the battery and the earth cable with wire wool

But I'd be leaning towards the steering being a problem rather then a alternator

Hi James
By all means check the terminals but I am afraid its probably the sensor.
This is where I found the column (its for a mk2a but fits yours if you put your motor and ecu in it)
https://www.partsworld-uk.com/products/electric-steering-column-mk2-punto

and here is the sensor that will fit
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Torque-S...eering-Torque-Drehmoment-Sensor-/282734717373

Hope this helps!!

If you need any advice I have just been through all this and will help if I can.
Trust me this was the cheapest option unless you are an electronics engineer and can repair torque sensors.
Unless someone else on here knows of an easier way?
Good Luck
Mark

Hi everyone,
Right. I've stripped the column out and removed the torque sensor.
Does anyone know where I can get one for a 1077 column. Grey insulation and black plug with 6 terminals.
Part number on the sensor is
45717F32246326
Thanks

How are you getting on with this now?

I hunted everywhere for as sensor.
Called some reconditioning places in the UK but no-one wanted to sell me one saying I don't have the correct balance great to do the job.
I eventually found two. One questionable one in another country for £90 and one from Poland which was the right one for £130 delivered.
So I ended up getting a while recon unit from ECU testing for £150.
Unlimited mile guarantee so was a no brainer.
All fitted and works perfect. Plug and play.
Well impressed with the company. They even supply a paid returns label for the old column included in the price.
Thanks for all you help.
James

150 quid ouch. And they'll put a sensor for 80 quid in your old column and sell that for another 150 quid.
Had your eyes pulled out there mate. There was nothing else wrong with your old column but hey Ho it's fixed now. Nice one!

After much fighting they have promised me a full refund and keep the column.
Finally...
I have a very funny video on how they treat a column for play in the bearing. I'll try and show once I actually have the money in my bank.....
Question I have is does anyone know how to remove the top bearing in the steering column. (1077)
I'm sure I can work it out but sometimes it just makes it easier if someone else has been there before.
Cheers

I removed that bearing once using 2 crowbars. I placed 1 like in the picture, then placed the bearing on top of crowbar (the tip of crowbar between bearing and plate), place the 2nd crowbar on top and then tappet them gentley with a hammer. The tips of crowbars slides in starting to push the bearing out. You have that way the first space inbetween bearing and plate, next you can use an extractor or something to pull the bearing out completley.

Thanks for your help.
I've got it out. I drifted the shaft out with a hammer and a pound coin to protect the shaft.
I then turned the shaft around and used it as a drift to press the bearing out once I'd Brent the tabs out.
But about that the bearing head no numbers on it. Just "made in France"
Ok have to take it to a bearing specialist....

So I've taken the bearing to a bearing shop and they tell me they can't get one to replace it. It's a unusual size. Fiat don't sell it... Only the whole steering column for almost ,,£600.
I've trying a few bearing places and they all seem to say the same thing.
So, of anyone knows where I can get hold of a bearing for the top of a 1077 steering column please shout out.
Internal dimension. 22mm
External dimension. 36mm
Thickness of width. 10.3mm (although 11 or 12 would be fine)
Thanks....

I looked for the spare ones I have (I have put them in a good place), I thought to send you one... But unfortunately they are different size:
Internal dimension. 25mm
External dimension. 47mm
Width. 12mm
You should look for one in a scrape yard, but if you find the same column, I think you'll have to insist so they sell you only the bearing, otherwise they'll probably try to sell you entire column. And if you can't convince them to sell just the bearing, I think a sh column shouldn't be so expensive.
Yours is MK3 Punto, isn't it?

I thought it was a mk2b?
It's a 2004(04 plate)
1.2 Active Sport 1.2 8v

This is a link to my steering column.
Does it look the same.
It does look the same. It looks exactly the same. That's a bit strange.
Here is a picture with part of the spare one I have, the inside bearing on the shaft. I got this column to use the sensor, but it was not working in the end, was even worse than the broken one I had (the computer and little motor are good). I bought a new one and it works very good. But my column is exactly the same size as this other one.
I mesured again and the bearing's sizes are the ones I put earlier.
The chassis/body is the same, 188.
